Cory Doctorow: Total Immersions has an "augmented reality" tool called D'Fusion Technology, as demonstrated in the Windows Media (ugh) video-stream (ugh) linked from the page below. It's pretty stunning: real people and objects are captured with video cameras and then three-dimensional virtual objects are seamlessly matted in, so that the demonstrator appears to be holding a bouquet of flowers that turns into a lightsaber, then a helicopter flies over the audience, etc. The gaming applications are pretty rad -- think of EyeToy with about a thousand times more granularity and interaction. Augmented Reality 07/06/2004 01:56 AM
Augmented Reality uses computer graphics that are placed over the “real world” in front of the person viewing it. It is the latest thing in mapping technology, allowing you to see it from the map’s perspective.

Cory Doctorow: Pablos sez, "This I Love Bees thing seems to be getting out of hand. It is some kind of massive alternate reality game that may be related to Halo 2. The site has been counting down to August 24th and now it looks like it is heading into meatspace. Now there are all these GPS coordinates where people are planning to go to all over the U.S. on Tuesday. There's all kinds of speculation about it on these forums and in #beekeepers on irc.chat-solutions.org. Anyway, the gargantuan scale of this thing makes me want to check it out if only for the bizarre flashmob appeal." (Thanks, Pablos!)

magic_ar_book.jpgA few folks in New Zealand have developed the next natural evolution of an old children's staple: the bedtime story. The book reads like a normal book, if desired, but when accompanied with a handheld (or head-based) display and computer vision tracking technology, the story comes to life in front of them. In another example of augmented reality bringing us really cool stuff, the director of the lab working on the project tells us "You can see animated virtual characters overlaid on the real book pages and hear the voice of [the narrator] reading the story." Technology Review's article explains what's keeping this technology from coming to market, at least for now, and when we might see it outside of the lab setting.

TCO or "Total Cost of Ownership" is a notion that one can calculate (with some accuracy) the complete cost of owning something, including all the weird side effects of acquiring and owning that thing. For example, I can by a new 3.2GHz notebook for $2,000 and it comes with Windows XP. But odds are that I'll spend 20 hours in the first year dealing with device drivers, spyware, and viruses. If I value my time at $50/hour, then the total...

Here's BoingBoing reporting the red-baiting of Mr. Gates. It's one thing to read this sort of thing from a studio exec, or head of a record label -- surrounded as they are by the sort that surround them. But the people I've met at Microsoft are miles beyond this sort of silliness. Does Mr. Gates not even talk to them?

Total Music Honesty

Total Music Honesty 12/17/2004 06:33 PM
This meme from Erik:

The Playlist Meme

  1. Open up the music player on your computer.
  2. Set it to play your entire music collection.
  3. Hit the "shuffle" command.
  4. Tell us the title of the next ten songs that show up (with their musicians), no matter how embarrassing. That's right, no skipping that Carpenters tune that will totally destroy your hip credibility. It's time for total musical honesty. Write it up in your blog or journal and link back to at least a couple of the other sites where you saw this.
  5. If you get the same artist twice, you may skip the second (or third, or etc.) occurances. You don't have to, but since randomness could mean you end up with a list of ten song with five artists, you can if you'd like.

Here's my list:

  • CMX: Ruoste
  • Irwin Goodman: Haistakaa paska koko valtiovalta
  • U2: The Star Spangled Banner
  • Schiller: Glück und Erfüllung
  • Maria Kalaniemi & Algardaz: Huuma (Los Mareados)
  • Edu Kettunen: Polkan transsi
  • Fairground Attraction: Perfect
  • Frankie Valli: Grease
  • Nylon Beat: Love and Hate
  • Leevi and the Leavings: Vasara ja nauloja

How To Comply With A Total Failure

How To Comply With A Total Failure 01/23/2004 02:23 PM
There was a conference yesterday all about the CAN-SPAM law, where speakers took turns either bashing the law for being a total failure - or telling people how to comply with it. Of course, for the most part, the people looking to comply with it, aren't spammers - but companies that already send out emails and are suddenly afraid that they're going to get in trouble. The article also mentions (thankfully!) that just because you comply with CAN-SPAM it doesn't mean you should spam people. Though, the reasoning presented was a little suspect. They point out that if Nordstrom's spammed people, all anti-spam programs would block them and they would have killed off email as a marketing channel. That's true. However, a much better point would have been that if they had gone and spammed people, many people would be incredibly pissed off at Nordstrom's - and, generally speaking, pissing off everyone you're trying to market to isn't the greatest technique for building a sustainable business. In the meantime, the FTC still won't say what they're doing to enforce CAN SPAM, and my spam count keeps going up.

A total French spazz!

A total French spazz! 06/05/2005 11:56 PM

If you've met me in person, you know I'm quite the gesticulator when I speak. And I also have a strange tendency -- which my brother has as well, so I can only imagine it's something we developed as children -- to make sound effects to accompany my actions. For example, if you and I are walking towards each other in a narrow hallway, and I skirt to the side to avoid a collision, I will also utter, "yurreeek," or some sound to approximate a skid and/or close call.

While in Paris, I added a whistle to my communication style to indicate something that I didn't have the vocabulary to express in French. For example, I'd be saying, "And then I went..." and with my hand I'll make an up-and-down-and-over-the-hill motion, and I'd make a long whistle sound to accompany it. Or if I wanted to say, "He had to go," I'd simply say, "He" and then shoot my hand out to the right and make a short whistle sound.

While this was very effective in making myself understood when French failed me, I've discovered it's permeated my English interactions as well! So now I'm eeking and whistling not matter who I'm talking to or what I'm saying. Truly I'm becoming a human beat box. Or a crazy lunatic. You decide.

Total Annihilation Redux

Total Annihilation Redux 06/22/2004 01:26 AM
I was in the store the other day, looking for a new computer game in the less than ten dollar range. I stop in every once in a while to see which old favorites now had cheap jewel case versions. This month I got very lucky and found a copy of Total Annihilation for six dollars. Sure, the game is now seven years old, but it is still a classic in the RTS (Real Time Strategy) genre. I've gotten burned out on Galactic Battleground and Age of Empires II lately, which are the same for the most part, except for different graphics. Total Annihilation was a leap forward in the RTS evolutionary chain.
