Responding to Spammers -- The Internet
Strikes Back

Responding to Spammers -- The Internet
Strikes Back
11/05/2003 10:55 AM
One of the things that I live my life according to is the question: "What would happen if everybody did this?". This is one of the reasons why I would never spam.. If everybody did that, we would end up with, well, the situation we've got with spam. Today, I got so fed up with the spam I've been receiving (I'm up to about 300 spams a day now), that I picked two random spams, went to their web sites and typed in random data into their forms. One of those sites was even kind enough to respond with a toll free number that I could use if I was overly eager to talk to them ( 1-866-561-9216 -- inaccessible from Canada). Then I asked myself my recurring question "What if everybody did this?". I liked the answer. We've been going about it all wrong. We need to start responding to spam.

Bringing Back Prepaid Internet Services?

Bringing Back Prepaid Internet Services? 12/04/2003 03:52 AM
Remember back when AOL was first becoming big and 1,000 free minutes actually meant something? Then along came everyone (including) AOL realizing that flat-rate unlimited service was what consumers wanted. For years, now, that's been the standard, and 1,000 free minutes doesn't mean anything when for one low price you get unlimited service. However, it appears that pay -as-you-surf internet connections are making something of a comeback. It's not for everyone, but business travelers, people without credit, and infrequent surfers are actually finding that it works just fine for them - since full access accounts are less practical for them.

Satellites Coming Back For Another Shot
At Internet Access?

Satellites Coming Back For Another Shot
At Internet Access?
01/06/2005 06:52 AM
It looks like some people are starting to think that satellite broadband can be a viable player in the wireless broadband arena. A company that currently makes satellite receivers for trains and cars mainly focused on beaming TV to mobile vehicles, is looking to offer satellite based internet access to cars. They promise speeds of "up to 2 Mbps with upload speeds of 128 Kbps." Of course, this is just an empty promise right now. It should set off alarm bells whenever a wireless company uses the phrase "up to" in the description of their speeds. That means reality will be much, much slower. The "up to" means under absolutely perfect conditions that simply don't exist outside of the laboratory with more than one user. And, while they talk about throughput there's absolutely no mention of latency -- which has always been the big stumbling block for satellite internet services. High latency, even on a faster connection will make the overall experience seem much slower. Of course, there could be some applications for which this is useful (specifically, ones where latency isn't as big of an issue), but it has a long way to go before it's actually competitive with other mobile broadband solutions.

The overblown Bush bounce

The overblown Bush bounce 09/07/2004 03:56 PM
The lights inside Madison Square Garden had barely been shut off late last week when Time and Newsweek magazines both unveiled new polls declaring that George W. Bush had blazed ahead to a double-digit lead in the presidential race. While some Kerry supporters were surely deflated by the news, others were skeptical, noting that it would be nearly impossible to meaningfully assess the effect of the Republican Convention before the holiday weekend. (We won't bother speculating whether Time and Newsweek were simply rushing to weigh in first on the expected Bush bounce, or whether their Bush-friendly numbers had anything to do with the "liberal" mainstream media that conservatives keep griping about.)

Bush's dead cat bounce 09/16/2004 07:05 PM
A new national survey released this afternoon by the Pew Research Center has some bright news for the John Kerry campaign: President Bush's "dramatic" charge ahead in the polls following the Republican Convention lasted for, well, about a New York minute. The new poll shows that the battle for the White House is once again deadlocked:
