Solar-Powered Rainbow Maker

Solar-Powered Rainbow Maker

Solar-Powered Rainbow Maker 02/05/2005 10:17 PM

rainbowmaker.jpg imageThis cute little device suction-cups to your window, soaking in sunlight and shooting it out through a hanging prism, giving you (presumably) larger or more vibrant rainbows than you'd get with just sunlight alone. It's completely useless and obviously a mechanism of the Gay Conspiracy, but I want one pretty badly. Unfortunately, besides this bit on SorobanGeeks, I have no idea where one would purchase such a trifle. (And yes, it's supposed to hang with the prisms down, but I didn't want to cram it in).

Update: Or get it at MoMA! Or Amazon! Or WowCoolStuff! (Thanks, Google and Randy and Everybody!)

Treehugger points out an innovative student project from NYU that adds electroluminescent materials to wallpaper, hiding in the background as traditional design elements when there is ample ambient light, then releasing stored sunlight through glowing elements as the lights dim. A prototype will be shown at the Winter Show at the Tisch School of the Arts this Sunday and Monday.

Or it will convert light into negative ions to attract positive ions from acidic dental plaque or something—it's Japanese; I hold myself to no accuracy. It's part of a selection of green hygiene products on Treehugger, including a prototype ceramic-bladed razor that wouldn't have needed sharping or replacement blades, but was rubbed out when it was discovered to allow cars to travel 200 miles on just a single gallon of gas.

sunpower_cell.jpg imageGawker Media Web Dork Prime Nick Aster sends us this link to Sunpower's solar assisted cell-phone batteries available for a variety of Nokia, Samsung, Motorola, and Nextel-branded phones. You won't be making phone calls with our star's light alone, but on a sunny day the Sunpower batteries can manage to add about 15 minutes of talk time to your battery for every hour they spend charging. Depending on how actively you use your phone (and what part of Arizona you live in), your phone might not have to hit the charger at all. Prices run from about $40 to $60 per battery via their website.

qd7_topimg.jpg imageAlright, I guess this does it: rainbow LEDs are the new blue LEDs. JVC has a new DVD/MD/CD mini-system called the UX-QD7 that not only has 63 color combinations in its LCD display, but also shoots a matching color through the clear plastic disc tray underneath. It's also nicknamed the "Lip Lap," although I don't have the foggiest idea why. While it's not super-likely that the Lip Lap will see the light of day here in the States (especially not with the Minidisc), this isn't the last time (nor the first) we see flashy candy-colored rainbow patterns in our electronics, mark my words.

Paint the whole 'lith with a rainbow...

Paint the whole 'lith with a rainbow... 04/09/2004 03:54 PM

Right. That's it. Enough already! I'm just going to go and launch the damn thing and let everyone else find all the bugs and the crappy bits of code and the hacked together bits of shit and I'll fix em all later when I've had a bit of a break. Otherwise it's going to suck up every last bit of my life forever as I fiddle and fuss around some of the obscurer areas when I should be throwing enough people at it and see how many land on something spiky.

So with that in mind, I'm here to announce the 87% complete new version of Barbelith - the online community that actually doesn't just talk shit all day (although it does that too). As ever with a redesign it's got a good few rough edges that will get worn into shape over time. Unlike most redesigns that I've been involved with it's also full of really bad code and there are places where the new lick of paint could do with a couple of more coats. But then again, unlike most commercial redesigns of any scale, this one took four weekends from start to finish. I am sooo looking forward to going outside again. Anyway - have a poke around - be nice to the locals and feel free to leave your thoughts:

Soldius1 Solar Phone Charger 06/17/2005 06:09 PM

Soldius1.jpgSo this thing, the sun, is capable of being more than just a big, bright, hot inconvenience? According to Soldius, yes. Their cell phone solar charger can give a full charge in only two or three hours in direct sunlight. It uses a technology called Maximum Solar Power Tracking and is compatible with most cell phones: Motorola, Nokia, Samsung, Siemens, Sony Ericsson and most 3G models. Right now, it is limited to cell phones, but expect it to support iPods and PDAs in the future.

tn_flexbats.jpg imageDouble A rechargeable batteries are by far the most commonly used, but there are definitely times when C-cell and D-cell batteries would be handy to have around. Rather than provide rechargeable cells in a variety of sizes, Sanyo's Family Battery Charger Kit comes with four AA batteries and a set a 'FlexBat' adapters, hollow plastic cylinders that act as spacers to allow you to use the rechargeable AAs inside C- or D-cell-sized spaces. Of course, the AA cells won't run as long as the larger cells would, but in a pinch it's a handy way to always have the size of battery you need available.

Solar Gadgets 06/06/2004 12:48 PM

sunra.jpg imageWired News has a short regurgitation from Reuters about the increasing number of gadget users who are turning to solar power to keep them mobile. It's not perfect, of course -- cloudy days can still easily double the recharge time of batteries -- but as the efficiency of solar cells improve, we may well see increased ubiquity of solar power for all our devices, especially as flexible, wearable panels become available.

Solar Death Ray 03/22/2005 04:46 PM

melt_duck.jpgStraight out of a (low-budget) Bond flick is the Solar Death Ray, a combination of particle board, 112 mirrors and, of course, Sol. Each of the mirrors are pointed towards one area, focusing the sun's rays onto a target easily heated up to 930-1100 degrees Fahrenheit. The project page contains bunches of science facts and enough instruction to build your own, Popular Science style. In all seriousness, though, watching it melt through some of the "targets" in their gallery is a bit disconcerting as I imagine hundreds of maladjusted youth attempting to build their own as an easy yet tragic way to score a new cat.

solar-powered gear the last few months and my editor's editor (why do I love blogging again?) was all huh?. And yes, okay, solar power isn't anything new, but the new high-efficiency panels are really starting to happen, like this entire new 'Solar Style' line of gear called the 'PV Solar Chargers." You've got yer solar bag, yer flip-out notebook charger, ya gotcher cell phone case with a charger—this stuff is taking off.

The Solar style gear doesn't seem to be quite ready for retail yet, but you can order a 'sample kit' for 200 bucks, which I'm guessing includes a few different units to try out.
