Mono Project is an Open Source implementation of the various ECMA and
.NET framework technologies for Unix, MacOS X, and Windows. The
project includes a compiler, a class library, and a CLI runtime
engine.
License: GNU Lesser General Public License (LGPL)
Changes:
A bug in Socket.Select implementation that was
introduced in 1.1.8 which failed to work on
write/error descriptors was fixed. A long-standing
deadlock in the runtime was fixed. This bug was
only visible with heavy thread usage at startup on
SMP systems, but it would freeze certain
applications (Beagle, iFolder, and others).
Support for NPTL as the default threading system
was added, which will benefit Gentoo and Fedora
Core 4 users.

Squeezing blood
out of the FCC turnip, Brighthand has eked out some information about
of the upcoming iPaq rx3000 Series Pocket PCs. All will use the
Samsung 2440 processor, QVGA screens, come with bundled Bluetooth 1.1
and WiFi (802.11b) networking, a 1.3-megapixel camera, with the main
differences being processor speed, built in memory (from 56MB to 152MB
user-accessible). Between Dell and HP, the Pocket PC world is just
rocking the PDA space -- if PDAs are dying, it won't be because Pocket
PC died quietly, unlike another PDA platform we won't mention.

The HP

the carrier to effectively pull the device off its shelves. Now
they're releasing a new ROM update that purports to fix most of the

04/18/2005 04:38 PMCrown Castle Mobile Media, a subsidiary of Crown Castle International
Corp., and Microsoft Corp. today announced that Crown Castle Mobile
Media has selected Windows Media Audio, Windows Media Video 9 and
Windows Media Digital Rights Management (DRM) 10 for its Digital Video
Broadcasting-Handheld (DVB-H) broadcast service deployment. As a
preview of the exciting possibilities this relationship will deliver,
Crown Castle Mobile Media will be demonstrating with Microsoft live
mobile TV on Windows Mobile (TM) -based devices at the National
Association of Broadcasters convention in Las Vegas from April 16 to
April 21, 2005.
Windows Media helps enable the secure delivery of high-quality digital
entertainment services over IP and other digital networks. The
components of the Windows Media 9 Series platform are available from
Microsoft in source code format, may be ported to mobile devices based
on any operating system, and are licensed under published terms that
provide significant commercial advantages for device manufacturers
compared with alternative solutions. Windows Media Video 9 is
Microsoft's implementation of VC-1, the proposed Society of Motion
Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) standard.
"Windows Media is a superb solution for delivering audio and
video services over mobile broadcast networks like DVB-H because of
its quality and efficiency," said Michael Schueppert, president
of Crown Castle Mobile Media. "We are excited to work with
Microsoft on this endeavor."

My First C Compiler
My First C Compiler
01/09/2004 09:56 PM
I accidentally googled into this short page on
History
of PC based C-compilers which made me think about my first C
compiler: Aztec C
on Apple II. I was among the first wave of programmers who
cut their teeth on
PCs instead of minicomputers and state-of-the-art in PC software
has risen high enough
to make programming in assembly tedious.
So I just bought a copy of wonderfully thin K&R book which took
only an hour to
read and started writing in C. I really liked it but I wasn't
comfortable with
the idea of using it for production code yet because size and speed
still reign supreme
then. But it was fine for writing tools.
I think the first program I wrote with Aztec C was a double-hires
image editor because
that was when Apple IIc was about to be released and there were no
tools to edit double-hires
images. It was sweet not having to worry about registers and
being able to write
almost English like code (well, it does when compared to assembly
code).
Oh boy, time sure flies.
