New PalmOne Products By May, EV-DO Treo
03/19/2005 02:45 AMPalmOne's conference call just finished up a few minutes ago and
there's some interesting bits of news, although no new product
announcements, per se. It looks like the Verizon Treo 650 will likely
have EV-DO support (something is going to get EV-DO support, at
least). They also reported that the Tungsten E sold 1.4 million units,
so that they're not moving away from their 'core market' of PDAs.
Sounds sketchy to me.
PalmOne also announced new products will be available by May, but
didn't give any indication what those might be.

Verizon Gets PalmOne Treo 600
07/08/2004 07:20 AM
Verizon Wireless
is finally getting the PalmOne Treo 600, according to SlashPhone, in
both 'with camera' and cameraless versions. Although the specific
launch date hasn't been announced yet (it should be within the next
few days), the stated plan is to launch the Treo along with the
re-launch of their Wireless Sync service. National Retail Price will
be $450 with a two-year service contract, or $500 with a one-year. So
this probably means the Treo Ace is about to launch on Sprint or
T-Mobile, right?

07/01/2004 10:48 AM
PalmOne doubled Wall Street
estimates this week, reporting their first profit as a standalone
company due to strong sales of the Treo 600, causing a 22 percent hike
in stock price in after hours trading. Sales of the Treo 600 (and the
upcoming 610 version) are expected to keep profits high, while PalmOne
also tries to expand to fill the space left by Sony's exit from the
PDA market outside of Japan. PalmOne shipped 151,000 Treo 600s during
the fourth fiscal quarter, out of 1.1 million devices, total. If the
610 causes a healthy price reduction for the 600 -- and they can keep
up with demand -- both models will fly off the shelves. (Thanks,
Chaz, for the Photochop.)

PalmOne Offers Treo 650 Patch for Sprint
Users; Still No DUN
03/23/2005 09:30 AMPalmOne has released an update for Sprint Treo 650 users which aims
to fix spotty voice quality and make the flash file system more
space-efficient. What it doesn't do is add dial-up networking
(DUN), a critical oversight that continues to be a font of bullshit
from both Sprint and PalmOne. The DUN functionality, if you recall,
was promised back in October to be coming
'soon,' but it's now five months later with no official DUN support in
sight. Of course, the community unlocked DUN via an unofficial patch
months ago.
I have no idea why Sprint and PalmOne continue to give customers
the run-around, but for an organization that's already teetering near
irrelevancy, PalmOne would do well to offer a better excuse than "[we
are] continuing to test our DUN implementation."

So
if the details coming out about the PalmOne LifeDrive PDA are legit,
it really does look like an interesting product, albeit one that gives
me that weird 'why wasn't this out three years ago' feeling. Still,
for devotes of the traditional PDA form factor, it looks dreamy, with
almost everything Palm users have asked for out of a new PDA (besides
Cobalt, the new operating system). I don't know that a built-in hard
drive is going to win over any new Palm fans, but for the
already-converted, I don't see why they wouldn't want one of these
very badly.
Oh, there's a reason I'm posting: new pictures and a supposed price
($550). They don't really confirm anything—especially with the
always-questionable lens flare—but it's the only truly
interesting product on PalmOne's horizon. It better be real.

04/09/2005 09:17 AMWhat's amazing is to watch
Macromedia and their private blogging corps try to spin this
one.
What
software company raises it prices nowadays? says David Temkin.
Here's my theory:
- Macromedia has found a hit in Breeze. They now have an
enterprise sales force out there doing onesies and twosies.
- Thye're building a suite of add-on modules - so watch out if
you're Convoq, Userplane and anybody else who relies upon the
FlashComn server.
- So where does Flex fit into this? Well I don't think Macromedia
wants to be in the tools biz anymore - so they'lll raise the price,
sell it through their direct sales force - ane once again - fuck their
developers.
- this is what I think is going on
IMHO
Oh BTW - what's the story with this hidden backdoor in the flash
player - that only Macromedia gets to use?

lesforce.com has finally gone public, launching that "other IPO,"
which many consider to be the second major IPO of the year, following
Google. It appears that there was an awful lot of demand. Yesterday
alone, leading up to the pricing, they raised the price from a range
of $7.50 to $8.50 up to a range between $9 and $10. However, they
clearly heard that there was a lot more demand, so when they sold the
shares last night, they went for a price of $11. They opened this
morning at $15, showing that they may have left even more money on the
table, but it's not a ridiculous first day bump. So far, the price
has stayed around that range. With a number of tech firms already
rushing
out the door it's likely that VCs and investment bankers alike are
looking for just about every company they can toss through the IPO
window before it closes again. There are certainly some good, solid,
profitable companies this time around, but it's likely that they'll
try to sneak a few duds through as well.

Treo 600 Review
01/05/2004 01:08 AMI've finally gotten around to posting about my experiences
with the Treo 600 in an essay called Life in the Treo Lane. The great thing about this device
is that it confirms most of what I've been writing about for the last
two years. I am truly shifted now!
Of course, this has brought home to me even more how woefully
lacking library services are in a shifted environment, and I'll be
doing a second write-up of how they look on the Treo. In
fact, I'm thinking of submitting it as a presentation at the ILA Conference this fall because
too few librarians have actually seen how their services look on a
smartphone, and this is one way I could show them, even taking URLs
from the audience. See, I could do that at ILA because I wouldn't have
to rely on the conference center for internet access! (Assuming I can
get a strong enough signal in the conference room....)
I've also updated the list of What's on My Treo 600, and I'm pretty close to maxxing
out the memory on it, both internal and external. Hopefully I'll get a
256MB SD card for my birthday.... ;-)

Still no Treo 600 for T-Mobile
12/02/2003 04:53 PMIt's December already and T-Mobile still isn't carrying the Treo 600.
Shedding some light on the matter is an email that reader Zachary

some problems regarding synching the Treo 600 with our network which
has delayed the release of this device. We hope to have these issues

Video to Go on the Treo 600??
01/07/2004 04:53 PMUSER THOUGHT: Watching a TV program
on a Palm device is fun.
"Watching a TV program on a Palm device is fun! I record a program
up to 1 hour long on my Mac using EyeTV, I edit out the commercials
with the same program. I then use Kinoma producer to convert the MPEG
file to a .PDB file, and finally I transfer the file to a 256MB SD
card using a card reader. The show can be viewed entirely with Kinoma
player. This is great when Im on the go, and want to see a show
or show someone else a show - while away from a TV. For me,
this is the next best thing until an SD card/TV tuner is made. :-) "
[Daily

Oh, suh-weet! I hadn't even thought of this! I could take shows
I've recorded on my ReplayTV, download them to my PC, convert them to
MPEG and then PDB, and watch them on my Treo 600! Is there anything
this puppy can't do?? And the screen on it is bigger than the one on
my Archos Jukebox, while negating the need to mess with multiple
programs and formats just to get the video onto the device!
I feel a test case coming on this weekend....
RealPlayer Comes to the Treo 600?
RealPlayer Comes to the Treo 600?
01/08/2004 07:20 PMThere were lots of big announcements today but as far as I'm
concerned, the biggest is Real's new software plus music store. Not for the
music store itself, because after I download the first song for $.10 I
don't envision locking my music up in AAC + Helix encrypted files, but
because RealPlayer 10 brings with it a new Palm component.
The line that specifically caught my eye is "support for over 50
portable music devices, including the iPOD and the Handspring
Treo 600."
Naturally my fingers tripped over themselves to get to the Real site and download the software to
my T600, but I couldn't find a download link for it anywhere. The key
turns out to be this little phrase: "For the next 10 days, U.S.
consumers who download RealPlayer 10 will be able to purchase their
first track for only $0.10. Consumers can transfer tracks purchased in
the RealPlayer Music Store to the Creative Zen Xtra as well as seven
models of PalmOne devices, including most of the Tungsten models, the
Zire 71, and the Treo 600."
I didn't realize I had to actually download the main player and
create an account at the music store just to get the Palm piece that I
want, but of course Real is going to make this as difficult as
possible (I don't use Real anymore because it's become more and more
annoying with each iteration). PDA
24/7 spelled it out in the following post:
"Email from Galley- 'As I write this, I am listening to Night
Ranger's 'Don't Tell Me You Love Me' on my Zire 71. It is a 192Kbps
DRM-enabled AAC file! RealPlayer 10 was released
today, and it features a music store. Tracks are 99 cents, or $9.95
per album. All files are RealAudio 10 (192Kbps AAC), so the sound
quality is very good. Persons who have signed up for a Music Store
account can get version 1.5 of RealPlayer for PalmOS.'
"
So despite my dislike for the software, I've been anxiously
awaiting a new version of RealPlayer that would work with the T600
because I really, really, really want to be able to access Live365 streams. Even better, I'd
like to finally be able to access Rhapsody on it, and I'm guessing
this is the first step to making that a reality.
By the time I realized what I needed to do, I was home reading my
aggregator for the night. Every day I carry my sync cable to work and
back in order to keep my data and programs up-to-date at both
home and work (yes, I need to buy a second charger/sync cable, but
they all seem to be sold out). Naturally, I forgot my sync cable
at work tonight, so I can't test this and install the Palm
program. Argh - my kingdom for a sync cable!!
So until I have a chance to go through all of this myself, has
anyone else installed the new RealPlayer 10 on a Treo 600? Can
you do more than just listen to purchased Real music files in it? Can
you hear live streams from other web sites? Enquiring minds want to
know!

there's no need to hold back the news. TreoCentral has a boatload of
information about a very-legit looking Treo 610, which they are

smaller form factor, 320 by 320 screen, working Bluetooth,
context-sensitive "soft buttons," more phone-like red/end, green/send
buttons, a 312MHz processor, and a 1.3-megapixel camera, all running
on top of Palm OS 5.4 (Garnet). Which is to say, yes, we are aroused
in a humorous but unoffensive to sensitive readers way. Making it
sound even more legitimate is the mention that the new Treo will have
only 32MB of RAM, an egregious shortcoming that most tricksters would
be too hesitant to pepper their fake with, even if it does
season it with some needful reality. Anyway, hot.

Sidekick Vs. Treo 600
Sidekick Vs. Treo 600
07/30/2004 09:56 AMI'm a fan of both the Sidekick and the Treo 600, so
when Levi Wallach wrote to tell me about his in-depth comparison
article featuring the two keyboarded messenger devices, I immediately
did what any sane person would do and read it and then forgot to post
about it. Fortunately for you, that was only like last week, and the
information is no less pertinent. In fact, with the Sidekick II and
the Treo Ace/610 just around the corner, bargain-minded shoppers would
do well to pay extra attention to the two devices that are still
plenty capable and about to get plenty cheap.
