Missing Matter Found

Missing Matter Found

Missing Matter Found 02/05/2005 10:16 PM

From a Story in Wired
For years, astrophysicists have been boggled by the fact that the grand sum of all the known "normal" matter in the universe -- that which makes up the stars, the Earth and even our own bodies -- only amounts to half of what should exist based on computer simulations.

Given that multiple simulations have continually yielded the same result, they theorized that the rest of the normal matter, known as baryons, must be hiding somewhere in the space between galaxies. However, they haven't had much evidence to support the theory until now.

A new study conducted with the help of the Earth-orbiting Chandra X-ray Observatory has revealed the existence of baryons in at least two giant, intergalactic clouds of super-hot gas 150 million and 380 million light-years from our planet.

The study, which appears in the Feb. 3 issue of the journal Nature, shows how certain wavelengths of X-rays emitted from a distant galaxy in the constellation Ursa Major are being absorbed by the two clouds. The absorption pattern, as detected by Chandra, is consistent with interference caused by carbon, neon, nitrogen and oxygen ions -- in other words, baryons.

Keeping Found Things Found: Web Tools Don't Always Mesh With How People Work
http://www.nsf .gov/pubsys/ods/getpub.cfm?pr03146

Of all the personal computers to be unwrapped during the holiday season, more than 80 percent will be used to go online and search the Web's more than 92 million gigabytes of data (comparable to a 2 billion-volume encyclopedia). Getting online is the easy part, finding a useful Web page is a bit harder—keeping track of a useful Web page is another issue altogether.

People have devised many tricks—such as sending e-mails to themselves or jotting on sticky notes—for keeping track of Web pages, but William Jones and Harry Bruce at the University of Washington's Information School and Susan Dumais of Microsoft Research have found that often people don't use any of them when it comes time to revisit a Web page. Instead, they rely on their ability to find the Web page all over again.

Keeping Found Things Found on the Web 01/28/2004 08:56 AM
Keeping Found Things Found on the Web - A Research Project of the Information School at the University of Washington
http://kftf.isc hool.washington.edu/projKFTF.asp
http://kftf .ischool.washington.edu/publications.asp

The goal of this study is to understand better the ways in which people manage information for subsequent re-access and re-use. The study focuses on the management of information found on the Word Wide Web. Follow-on studies will look at similar problems and practices of personal information management for other information types including email and personal files (electronic and paper-based). The classic problem of information retrieval, simply put, is to help people find the relatively small number of things they are looking for (books, articles, web pages, CDs, etc.) from a very large set of possibilities. This classic problem has been studied in many variations and has been addressed through a rich diversity of information retrieval tools and techniques.

A follow-on problem also exists which has received relatively less study: Once found, how are things organized for re-access and re-use later on? What can be done to avoid the need to repeat the entire search process? We refer to this as the problem of Keeping Found Things Found. The current study addresses this problem in the context of World Wide Web use. The study focuses on use of the Web by managers, researchers, librarians and other information specialists. But it is expected that the results of the study will be relevant to most users of the Web.

Middleware dark matter

Middleware dark matter 04/20/2004 10:08 AM
Steve Vinoski, middleware architect at IONA and a prolific columnist, has been blogging for a couple of months at Middleware Matters. Back in 2002, his IEEE Internet Computing column used the title that I stole for this blog entry: Middleware Dark Matter. The reference is to Clay Shirky's excellent meme "PCs are the dark matter of the Internet," which helped the peer-to-peer movement define itself circa 2000. Vinoski wrote:
We can apply a similar analogy to middleware because the mass of the middleware universe is much greater than the systems -- such as message-oriented middleware (MOM), enterprise application integration (EAI), and application servers based on Corba or J2EE -- that we usually think of when we speak of middleware. We tend to forget or ignore the vast numbers of systems based on other approaches. We can't see them, and we don't talk about them, but they're out there solving real-world integration problems -- and profoundly influencing the middleware space. These systems are the dark matter of the middleware universe. [Steve Vinoski]

Web Searchers Search Around

Web Searchers Search Around 02/17/2004 01:15 PM
Despite conventional wisdom saying that people just use Google for their web searches, a new study suggests that web searchers are not particularly monogamous when it comes to searching. While, yes, most people do use Google, they're not afraid to use other search engines when necessary. Most people tend to use two different search engines on a regular basis. The study suggests that a better search engine doesn't necessarily need to worry so much about prying people away from Google. There's also a ton of people who don't use search at all (who are these people?) - and the study suggests that MSN and Yahoo might want to target these people. On the whole, I'd think that converting a Google searcher may be easier, though, than convincing someone who doesn't bother searching at all why they need to start using a search engine. Still, this does suggest some of the reasons why search engines are suddenly all talking about personalization features to make their search "sticky". If it's customized to you, the theory goes, you'll want to come back. The problem with that theory is that not everyone really wants customized search, and depending on how it's set up, it could end up annoying users more than helping them.

What Do Intranet Searchers Want?

What Do Intranet Searchers Want?
http://www.acmqueue.com/modules.php?name=Content&pa=showpage&pid =140

Almost all of the information in an enterprise is unstructured data -- existing in the form of HTML pages, documents in proprietary formats, paper and media objects, etc. As a result, enterprise search differs from Internet search in several important ways. First, on the Internet a user usually seeks the "best" or most relevant document -- whereas on an intranet a searcher is often looking for some specific document that she or he has seen in the past. Second, the Internet reflects the collective voice of many authors -- whereas an intranet typically reflects the view of the organization it serves (and so intranet content is created to disseminate information rather than attract and hold the attention of casual searchers). A third difference is that an Internet search engine is controlled and managed by one organization as a service -- whereas enterprise search software is licensed to and deployed by a variety of organizations in diverse environments, and imposes varying hardware constraints, software platforms, bandwidth, firewalls, heterogeneous content repositories, security models, document formats, user communities, interfaces, and geographic distribution.
