SciELO - Scientific Electronic Library Online
http://www.scielo.org/

SciELO - Scientific Electronic Library Online is a model for cooperative electronic publishing of scientific journals on the Internet. Especially conceived to meet the scientific communication needs of developing countries, particularly Latin America and the Caribbean countries, it provides an efficient way to assure universal visibility and accessibility to their scientific literature, contributing to overcome the phenomena known as "lost science". In addition, the SciELO model comprises integrated procedures for the measurement of usage and impact of scientific journals. This will be added to Academic Resources 2004 Internet MiniGuide. This has been added to Research Resources Subject Tracer™ Information Blog.

Abstract
This paper examines the methodology and results from Web-based surveys of more than 15,000 networked electronic services users in the United States between July 1998 and June 2003 at four academic health sciences libraries and two large main campus libraries serving a variety of disciplines. A statistically valid methodology for administering simultaneous Web-based and print-based surveys using the random moments sampling technique is discussed and implemented. Results from the Web-based surveys showed that at the four academic health sciences libraries, there were approximately four remote networked electronic services users for each in-house user. This ratio was even higher for faculty, staff, and research fellows at the academic health sciences libraries, where more than five remote users for each in-house user were recorded. At the two main libraries, there were approximately 1.3 remote users for each in-house user of electronic information. Sponsored research (grant funded research) accounted for approximately 32% of the networked electronic services activity at the health sciences libraries and 16% at the main campus libraries. Sponsored researchers at the health sciences libraries appeared to use networked electronic services most intensively from on-campus, but not from in the library. The purpose of use for networked electronic resources by patrons within the library is different from the purpose of use of those resources by patrons using the resources remotely. The implications of these results on how librarians reach decisions about networked electronic resources and services are discussed.

AIfIA opens IA Library
http://aifia.org/library/

The Asilomar Institute for Information Architecture (AIfIA) is pleased to announce the opening of the Information Architecture Library, an international collection of the best articles, books, blogs, guides, reports, and other resources related to the field of information architecture. The IA Library was developed by Joanna Markel and Jeff Tang, two
graduate students at the University of Michigan's School of Information. Chiara Fox, Austin Govella, and Peter Morville provided support and served as mentors. "Jeff and Joanna designed and built a fully-functional user interface and content management system for the Library. That's quite an accomplishment for a single-semester independent study project!" says AIfIA's president, Peter Morville. The IA Library's collection is still very much under development. We
are adding new resources, particularly in languages other than English, to create a more well-rounded collection. In addition, AIfIA is actively seeking a volunteer Library Director to oversee the continued development of this important public service.

Metropolitan Library System Officially
Opens for Business
07/05/2004 12:52 AM

When I left work today, I left the Suburban Library System. When I go back to work in the morning, I'll be going to the Metropolitan Library System, and while it's been kind of crazy lately getting ready for the merger, there is also much to look forward to.

For example, starting tomorrow, I get 300+ new libraries as members of "my" Library System, and some of them are pretty cool libraries. There are also some very interesting ones in the mix, too. Here are just a few examples of the new libraries with whom I could potentially work.

  • American Library Association
  • American Medical Association
  • Art Institute of Chicago
  • Chicago Children's Choir
  • Chicago Historical Society
  • Chicago Mercantile Exchange
  • Chicago Public Schools
  • Chicago Sun-Times
  • Chicago Tribune - Marketing Library
  • Chicago Urban League
  • Encyclopedia Brittanica, Inc.
  • Gerber/Hart Library & Archives
  • John G. Shedd Aquarium
  • Leather Archives & Museum
  • Leo Burnett Co., Inc.
  • MacArthur Foundation
  • Museum of Broadcast Communications
  • Newberry Library
  • Ogilvy & Mather
  • Old Town School of Folk Music
  • Playboy Enterprises, Inc.
  • Prevention First, Inc.
  • Pritzker Military Library
  • Quaker Oats Company
  • Terra Museum of American Art
  • U.S. Department of Justice
  • U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
  • World Book Publishing

Plus a ton o' academic libraries. Talk about opportunities for partnerships! The potential for interactions is quite intriguing. For example, look at the last name on that list - World Book Publishing. They're sending someone to my RSS class this month.

Yes, this will definitely be an interesting year!

Microsoft Research Opens Its Doors

Microsoft Research Opens Its Doors 06/10/2004 09:54 AM
Finding the shortest distance between two points sounds easy enough, but computing that route takes too long and consumes too much computer memory. Researchers at Microsoft Corp. are tackling the problem so that, in the next few years, computers can map the fastest route as well as make fast adjustments for road work or traffic jams, said Michael Schroeder, assistant director of Microsoft Research's Silicon Valley lab here. It comes down to developing a better mapping algorithm, one efficient enough to do massive computations in the palm of someone's hand.
