Sanyo Announces New CEO
Sanyo Announces New CEO
04/08/2005 10:39 AMSanyo Electric Corporation announced on the 8th
that they have a new CEO coming in, named Tomoyo Nonaka. This is a
significant move for the company as she is replacing Toshimasa Iue,
grandson of Sanyo founder Toshio Iue.
Tomoyo Nonaka is female. I wouldn't really bother to point this out
in fear of all the hate mail Joel will receive, but it's
Japan. Women's rights still have a very, very long way to go
over there (particularly in the corporate world), and this a step in
the right direction. Tomoyo Nonaka's experience is plentiful, from
being a newscaster to CEO of Asahi Beer.

class="center"/>Sanyo has updated its Xacti flash camcorder line
from the C1 model to these new C4s, which appear to have a few nice
improvements for those who go tapeless, including a video stabilizer,
an upgraded four-megapixel CCD for still images, and a slightly larger
LCD screen (1.8-inch instead of 1.5-inch). There are some other slight
changes, as well, but it doesn't look like the video quality is any
better; we're still talking VGA (640 by 480 pixels at 30 frames per
second). Not bad, but not an upgrade, either.
The new colors are nice, too, and I do love this form factor. It's
much more usable than I had first thought, and the docking stations
make them really handy. (Thanks, Martin!)

Living Room has information about a bunch of new
cameras from Pentax (and one from Sanyo), including this
5.36-megapixel Pentax Optio SV [pictured right], a slim-profile camera
with a 5x optical zoom; and the Sanyo Xacti VPC A5, another
5-megapixel camera, although this one has only a 2.8x optical zoom. In
addition, Pentax has a new DSLR (called the "*ist" - what is it with
camera companies and unpronounceable names? Asteriskist? Wildcardist?
Starist? Multiplyist? Fireballist?) and a pistol-grip hybrid
camera/camcorder coming out, as well.

If you're wondering how Sanyo can cram an
8-megapixel sensor into this new VPC-C4 camera, I can tell you:
cheating. It's really just a 4-megapixel unit which can use
interpolation to upscale the resolution of the shots. That's a not a
bad thing, really, but it will provide results far different than
those from a true 8-megapixel camera.
The VPC-C4 shares the form factor and much of the feature set of
its predecessor, the Fisher FVD-C1 and other Xacti models,
although it is improved in almost every way. It still uses just an SD
card for storage, for better and for worse.

Sanyo Creates Smallest FM Tuner Yet
08/03/2004 09:03 AM
Sanyo has
developed a tiny FM tuner chip that is roughly half the size of
current tuners on the market; they're calling it the "Easy Radio IC."
It requires no other parts to operate and even has an upcoming version
that can tune in AM as well (that's coming in September). At just 5mm
wide, there's not any reason that any portable music player should be
without FM radio, unless the manufacturer is just too stubborn to put
it in.

Double A rechargeable batteries are by far the most
commonly used, but there are definitely times when C-cell and D-cell
batteries would be handy to have around. Rather than provide
rechargeable cells in a variety of sizes, Sanyo's Family Battery
Charger Kit comes with four AA batteries and a set a 'FlexBat'
adapters, hollow plastic cylinders that act as spacers to allow you to
use the rechargeable AAs inside C- or D-cell-sized spaces. Of course,
the AA cells won't run as long as the larger cells would, but in a
pinch it's a handy way to always have the size of battery you need
available.

real fuel cell system to notebook PCs in the near future.
Sanyo has already developed a hybrid battery system with both standard
lithium ion battery and fuel cell which can be used on existing
ThinkPad models. Said system uses a 130cc cartridge, leading to about
8 hours of battery life. The best part, though, is hot-swapping fuel
cell cartridges for uninterrupted mobile computing. The worst part? It
weighs 2.2kg (nearly 5 pounds).

04/11/2005 10:22 AMIBM and Japan's Sanyo Electric said Monday they would jointly develop
a methanol fuel-cell system for the U.S. technology giant's ThinkPad
notebook personal computers. The two companies said in a statement
they would develop a micro direct methanol fuel cell system that could
supply up to eight hours of power per cartridge for current and future
ThinkPad models.
The system could enable PCs to run continuously through constant power
generation while a conventional battery Latest News about Batteries
could be used as an auxiliary power unit. A Sanyo spokesman said this
hybrid battery system would be best suited for use in offices, because
it would be able to run intensive business applications such as
multimedia, graphics and other programs without draining the battery.
