Trapeze Upgrades Switch Solution

Trapeze Upgrades Switch Solution 12/18/2003 03:39 PM
Like other WLAN switch vendors, Trapeze has come out with some upgrades that address shortcomings indicated by the market: Trapeze access points now support 802.11g and Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) encryption keys, which are part of the 802.11i security spec in progress. (WPA includes only TKIP keys, far superior to WEP, but not as good as AES for government-grade operations.) The access points can also connect directly to an existing switch or a Trapeze switch so customers have more options in how they architect the network. The platform now can also continuously scan the air for rogue APs. Once rogues are found, it identifies their locations on a network map. Trapeze also integrated with SpectraLink's voice over Wi-Fi solution so the platform will support the solution. Trapeze has already integrated with Vocera and Telesym, other voice over Wi-Fi vendors....

Yahoo upgrades email storage to 1GB

Yahoo upgrades email storage to 1GB 03/23/2005 02:23 AM
Yahoo plans to once again raise its free email storage, this time to 1GB. The rise in email storage matches the same email storage offered by search rival Google. The storage change is said to begin in late April for Yahoo's free email users, whose current storage mark is set to 250MB. Yahoo said that it will take about two weeks for their free email users to see the difference.

Yahoo's storage boost comes only one week after Google began giving Gmail accounts to random visitors of its homepage. The giving of random Gmail accounts has raised speculation of Google possibly allowing Gmail accounts available to the public on April 1st, one year after Gmail's beta launch. Yahoo's vice president of communications products, Brad Garlinghouse, said in an interview that the storage upgrade is not a response to Google's latest actions.

Yahoo will also offer anti-virus scanning provided by Symantec.

Trapeze has added support for several Cisco APs: WIth a command-line change, a Cisco AiroNet 350, 1100, or 1200 can be part of a Trapeze-managed WLAN switched network. This should make it an easier sell for Trapeze VARs walking into Cisco-oriented enterprises, especially with Cisco VARs and direct sales folk trying to push new Airespace equipment into existing installations. This announcement ranks up there with AirWave's recent 3.1 version bump that allows AirWave's software management tool for WLANs to handle Cisco Airespace devices, too....

Cisco Intros WLAN Switch Module

Cisco Intros WLAN Switch Module 05/05/2004 02:04 PM
Cisco introduced today its wireless LAN services module, an add-on to its Catalyst 6500 switch that integrates support for WLANs: Coupled with Cisco APs (wireless access points), the platform offers some of the functionality of other WLAN switch platforms but has some drawbacks. One of the most important capabilities that Cisco executives stressed during a Webcast this morning was the ability for users to roam between APs in 50 milliseconds--fast enough to support voice. The client is authenticated at the AP where traffic is sent through a secure roaming tunnel back to the Catalyst switch, which could be located anywhere in the network. As the client roams, its IP address stays the same, so voice calls, VPNs, and other applications aren't interrupted when the client associates with a new AP. Because all traffic travels through the switch, roaming might not always happen in under 50 milliseconds. Cisco tested roaming between two APs that were located in Perth, Australia. The APs were connected to a switch that was located in Sydney, a distance away from Perth that is similar to the distance between Los Angeles and Miami. The handoff time increased to around 250 milliseconds, slow enough for an audible blip in a voice call. But applications are not dropped during that time. Cisco also said that it is releasing an upgraded version of its wireless LAN solution engine (WLSE), Cisco's management software for APs across an enterprise. The new version not only detects rogue or unauthorized APs, but can remotely disable the switch port that the rogue is connected to. Also, with the new software, customers can set their Cisco APs to scan-only mode. Customers who may not be ready to deploy a WLAN may still want to ensure that rogue APs aren't being deployed. "Over time they will deploy a WLAN, and the same APs they use for scan-only can be used as regular APs," said Bill Rossi, general manager of Cisco's wireless unit. (Airespace, a WLAN switch developer, has a similar offering, which has the added feature of deassociate signal bombing a rogue AP to prevent clients from successfully remaining connected to it.) The upgraded WLSE also supports instant AP deployment without having to configure the AP before adding it to the network. When the switch module recognizes that a new AP has been plugged in, it alerts the WLSE system, which sends the configuration file to the...

Enough With The Useless Enterprise
Software Upgrades

Enough With The Useless Enterprise
Software Upgrades
07/09/2004 11:41 AM
For Techdirt Corporate Intelligence, we've used Quickbooks to keep track of our bookkeeping. It's a decent, though not spectacular program. We bought a copy of Quickbooks Pro 2001 about the time it came out and have used it ever since. There was never any reason to upgrade, because the product worked fine as is, and none of the upgrade features were worthwhile. Our accountant, always looking for ways that we can save money, specifically recommended that there was absolutely no good reason to upgrade. However, at the end of April, Intuit "sunset" the product. This is fair. It makes sense for a company to eventually stop supporting old products. What is not fair, is that the product suddenly lost features because of this. We weren't worried about it being sunset, because we had never needed support from Intuit. However, starting in May, when we went to email out our customer invoices, the software said that it could no longer send emails because the product was sunset and we needed to upgrade. In other words, they didn't just sunset support for the product, they sunset features of the product and held our invoices ransom until we would pay for an upgrade. I called up Intuit and was told repeatedly that they needed to do this in order to give "the best support possible." I explained repeatedly that I understood the need to sunset support of products, but could not understand the need to sunset features that worked the day before. I had been a happy Intuit customer until the day they decided to hold my invoices for ransom, and now I was being forced to upgrade. The Intuit customer service rep promised to "escalate" the issue, and insisted I would hear back within a week. "Within a week" apparently means "never" to people at Intuit. Over at News.com, Charles Cooper is noting that companies are increasingly tired of the forced enterprise software upgrade path, which only helps the enterprise software company. He points out that these companies are reaching a point where they're simply not going to accept it any more, and software vendors need to realize this -- or someone else is going to come along who does things better. In the meantime, does anyone know of a good alternative to Quickbooks? So far, investigations into their main competitors suggest every one is just as bad. It's no fun going with the best of a terrible group. There must be a better solution out there, and if there isn't, shouldn't that represent an opportunity for someone to do things right?
