Maddux 22nd Pitcher to Join 300 Club
(AP)
08/07/2004 07:22 PMAP - Greg Maddux relied on guts, guile and his bullpen to win his
300th game because he never quite found the pinpoint control that has
so defined his stellar career. Maddux calmly overcame a shaky start to
become the 22nd major league pitcher to reach 300 victories, leading
the Chicago Cubs over the San Francisco Giants 8-4 on Saturday.

04/07/2005 12:44 PM
JVC will introduce a few new rear projection TVs
for the Japanese market, under the "Big Screen EXE" brand. The 61"
"HD-61MD60" will cost 787,500 yen, and the 51" 682,500 yen. They do
appear to have some nice specs, such as a 700cd/m2
brightness on the 52 inch. But they're being marketed based on a low
power consumption: 198W, not that we Americans really care. Speaking
of Americans, JVC plans to introduce these two sets here in July, as
well as add a 70" model.

Will Flat Panels Ever Replace CRTs?
03/20/2003 01:05 PMWhen placed next to a sleek flat-panel monitor, a cathode ray tube
(CRT) looks bulky and
archaic, as much a remnant of the recent past as a rotary-dial phone.
But do not count
the big boxes out yet. Despite their bulky appearance, CRTs trump flat
panels in some
areas.

Sponsors, speakers, panels, audience
Sponsors, speakers, panels, audience
05/07/2004 01:39 PM
Supernova and
the recently announced Web 2.0
conference are throwbacks to the priorities of old conferences, of the
eighties and nineties: sponsors, speakers, panels, audience.
Execs from high tech companies pay sponsorship fees, not
disclosed, and guarantee that the content is paid advertising and that
nothing real is said on stage. If you don't pay the sponsorship fee,
you don't get a speaking slot. If you offend a sponsor, you don't get
invited back.
These conferences are all spin, and empty
bluster.
The organization of the
conferences, with speakers and panels, guarantees that the audience
falls asleep or is frustrated, waiting to make their point until they
get to ask questions at the end of the session. Questions. What a
silly concept. Look in the room. It's pretty likely the people who
know the most are in the "audience."
By the end of the day people are in the hallway or outside,
talking to each other, and when that gets boring, talking on cell
phones.
Now that they have WiFi, at least there's an outlet for the
audience's ideas, their blogs.
But as we learned at BloggerCon II, it's totally possible to do
a conference without sponsors, without speakers, panels, without an
audience. In this model, the rooms are full to capacity and even
though there's WiFi, there was hardly any time to post to blogs. You
can steal the design
for this conference. And if you do, sign me up, I want to be there.
If you really want to get the most out of people's time, switch
models. You don't need the money from the sponsors, and you don't need
speakers, and you surely don't need an audience.

InFocus DepthQ: Cheap 3D Projection
InFocus DepthQ: Cheap 3D Projection
04/15/2005 09:59 AM
InFocus and Lightspeed Design Group are acnnouncing the
InFocus DepthQ, an affordable 3D DLP projector that looks to me like a
tweaked X2. It's not a solution for everyone—the 3D format are
limited to "VESA VGA, page flip, stereo 3D format," and it requires
the wearing of LCD shutter glasses—but it looks like many NVIDIA
cards will support it, as well as some games (I'm not sure how much of
the load is lifted by the video card driver and how much, if any, is
done by the game). Still, it's cheap, at around $3,500, and uses solid
Infocus technology. The only thing I can't determine is if it comes
with a pair of shutter glasses or not (it looks like it doesn't).
