To write: perchance to try again: ay,
there's the rub or Do I Write Another
Book?
01/15/2003 08:47 AM
To write: perchance to try again: ay, there's the rub1 or Do I Write Another (PHP2) Book? Anyone who was IMing me in the May / June / July time frame may be surprised to see this entry. Things change and time makes pain and bad memories drift away. I am speaking, of course, about the O'Reilly Essential Blogging writing process which was just plain awful and made me swear that I would N_E_V_E_R write another book for money. And here I am. I've been approached by Sams to write a PHP 5 in 21 Days book and I'm torn. I just don't know whether I want to walk this road again. Here's the situation as I see it: Pros I am the PHP Journal columnist for "On the Horizon" which talks about new PHP 4.x and 5.x features so it makes sense to write this I'm virtually certain that I'd enjoy working with this editor more than my last. Shelley strikes me as just plain cool (she handled giving out books to a pack of ravenous open source folk at PHP CON with a lot of style and grace). Good self promotion Would probably generate consulting work although that is by no means clear Establishes my credentials more firmly and anchors me to PHP even more Chance to talk about things like templating and event driven coding $$$ (although there is never all that much of it) Having an editor Cons Having an editor Have to create a __good__ website for the book How will they bungle the online side of it in a new and creative way? Lose the source code? Post it wrong? Managing the book writing and blogging and consulting process concurrently Will I actually make money Does promoting parts of it on my blog make me a schill Questions If anyone out there can help with these questions, I'd appreciate it: Anyone out there buy Sams books? I haven't in years and I don't know the rep these books have. Thoughts? Example of Similar Sams Book Has anyone written for Sams? Do they pay well What are they like as a publisher? Positive, Negative, Details? Was it a good or bad omen when I dropped my review copy of "Cold Fusion in 21 days" in the sink when shaving this morning? Would you buy it? Do people buy PHP books as opposed to using PHP.Net? I myself have a bunch of PHP books but don't turn to them all that often. There is something just plain addictive about walking into a bookstore and seeing yourself on the shelf. That and once you've written one book then there is just something about it. As Robert Heinlein once remarked (and the quote is inexact) "No one likes writing but people like having written". He was definitely correct about that. Thoughts, feedback, comments strongly appreciated. 1To sleep: perchance to dream: ay, there's the rub; Hamlet, Act 3, Scene 1. [_Go_] (sorry for the bad link but their search engine doesn't give easily linkable results) 2Oh and if you're wondering why I put PHP on the title, with PHP being the target audience I figured it would get this more attention (and syndication to other sites) from the target audience

Drupal handbook going CC

Drupal handbook going CC 12/19/2004 02:55 PM

The handbook for Drupal, one of the most popular web content management systems (Spread Firefox is a recent high-profile example) has adopted Creative Commons licensing so as to

  • make clear that Drupal community members can use the documentation in the Drupal handbook in other contexts, such as revising and developing site specific help docs.
  • allow the integration of already existing Drupal documentation being developed outside of drupal.org by Bryght, CivicSpace, and others.
  • eliminate potential legal conflicts over rights of use.

This is a good example of a community taking an existing work with a large number of contributors and obtaining the agreement necessary to take advantage of a standard Creative Commons license.

Thanks to Victor Stone for the pointer.

The Unix-Haters Handbook

The Unix-Haters Handbook 01/17/2003 12:22 AM
"I liken starting one's computing career with Unix, say as an undergraduate, to being born in East Africa. It is intolerably hot, your body is covered with lice and flies, you are malnourished and you suffer from numerous curable diseases. But, as far as young East Africans can tell, this is simply the natural condition and they live within it. By the time they find out differently, it is too late. They already think that the writing of shell scripts is a natural act." -- Ken Pier, Xerox PARC

Using Unix or Linux is not a one way thing. It's a love-hate relationship. It's a beautiful little os with a lot of crap layered on top and around it.

University Policy Handbook Index
http://www.campus-adr.org/Staff_Admin_Building/searchpolicies.html

The primary purpose of the University Policy Handbook Index is to assist users who are exploring the creation / revision of Conflict Resolution policies at their institution. The index does this by providing access to examples from other institutions. You can search all of the Policy handbooks in the index or narrow your search to a category that matches the audience you are creating / revising a policy for. The index is not limited in any way to Conflict Resolution related policies, but rather attempts to index all the web-accessible handbooks at major institutions in the United States. Thus it should prove useful in a broad range of circumstances. As of October 1, 2003 there are 975 records in the Policy Handbook database from 691 universities / colleges in the United States.

ADC publishes 'Developing 64-Bit
Applications'
12/29/2004 01:48 PM
Apple Developer Connection (ADC) has published an article titled "Developing 64-Bit Applications" on its Web site. The piece explains the switch from 32- to 64-bit computing that will come with the release of Mac OS X v10.4 "Tiger" next year, enabling developers to go beyond the 4GB limitation on RAM currently imposed by Mac OS X on each application. Tiger ups the ante to 16 exabytes, or 16 billion gigabytes -- enough to hold 16,000 copies of the Internet Archive, which is dedicated to maintaining an archive of the Internet. While no computer can hold that much memory, Apple notes: "There's a lot of headroom for the future and it will take a long time to exhaust the potential of the 64-bit address space." You can read more on the ADC site.

Futurismic publishes its first story

Futurismic publishes its first story 05/02/2004 03:10 AM
Futurismic, the science-fiction writers' group-blog, announced a while back that it was going to start publishing fiction, and put out a call for submissions. Today, they published their first work, a story called "The Factwhore Proposition" by Campbell-, Hugo-, Nebula- and Sidewise-Nominee Charles Coleman Finlay.

I quite liked the story: it's a distopian work about the commoditization of knowledge work -- Google Answers meets McDonalds -- with a nice bit of characterization in the protagonist, who is clearly the spiritual descendant of today's web-geeks.

Even after all these years, he couldn’t believe the stupid questions people asked. With so much information available online, it was difficult, sometimes impossible, to phrase a search string properly to narrow the hits down to find what you wanted, especially when much of the best info was hidden by exclusionary marketing agreements or sequestered behind gates. People would rather pay someone else to do it. And with the big bio-boom, some people had the money to spare. Dylan was not some people. The gap between the haves and have-nots had been blown Grand Canyon wide by the new technology, with those who could afford the enhancements on a narrow ledge that kept moving farther away from everyone else. But if Dylan roped himself to enough of the haves, maybe he could pull his way over to the other side.
