Spam Hasn't Changed One Bit For New Law
Spam Hasn't Changed One Bit For New Law
01/06/2004 05:46 AMI mentioned yesterday that I hadn't seen the slightest change in the
amount of spam I received since January 1, when the new "CAN SPAM" law
went into effect. It appears I'm not the only one. The various spam
stoppers all claim that
they haven't seen one bit of difference in the spam they're
blocking. It certainly hasn't gone down, and they certainly
aren't providing real information on how to opt-out. The only thing
I've noticed (and this could be a coincidence) is that fewer spam
messages have been getting through my filter the last few days.
Otherwise, the CAN SPAM law appears to have done absolutely nothing to
change the way spammers operate.

Jay on whether 9/11 changed journalism
08/14/2004 08:22 AMJay has blogged an atypical piece that is typically brilliant. He
asks: Did 9/11 change journalism? Should it have? What story do
journalists tell themselves about their role in the "war on
terrorism"? Are journalists who inform citizens of the most powerful
and influentual nation in the world participants in the war on terror,
in the worldwide struggle for democracy, freedom and markets, because
their country is a participant—the biggest by far—and they
inform it? Don't miss the discussion in the comments. I only have a
simple-minded answer to the question Jay poses in his nuanced post:
9/11 should have...

How Copyright Law Changed Music
How Copyright Law Changed Music
06/02/2004 11:07 PMChuck D of Public Enemy has always been a strong supporter of freeing
up music. Years ago, when Napster first appeared on the scene, he was
one of the first to publicly stand up in support of Napster, and even
went
on TV to debate Lars Ulrich from Metallica on the subject. Here's
a fascinating
i
nterview with Chuck D & Hank Shocklee of Public Enemy, talking
about how copyright law forced them to change the style of music they
created entirely. They claim that two of their earlier albums would
be impossible to create today, but were possible early on when record
execs hadn't trained their legal guns on music sampling yet. Now,
those same songs, that used many different samples would be impossibly
expensive. Chuck D claims that the group had to "change our whole
style" between albums in order to take into account new copyright
rules. Also, when asked about others taking their music and remixing
it themselves, he says: "I think my feelings are obvious. I think it's
great."
