A mini-guide to Mac OS X for new Mini
owners
A mini-guide to Mac OS X for new Mini
owners
02/01/2005 08:53 PMApple finally went and released an inexpensive computer. With the
advent of the Mac mini, some Windows and Linux users who have been
curious about Mac OS X but turned off by Apple's high prices have
finally bit the bullet and ordered a mini.
Trying an unfamiliar operating system can be irritating at times.
Things are not where you expect them to be, the GUI is different, and
connecting to servers and other PCs can be frustrating. Hence the
mini-guide.
This is not intended to be a comprehensive guide to all
things OS X. Its purpose is to help those new to the operating system
do simple things, like use a Windows printer, connect to a network
share, and figure out what the key with the funny-looking squiggle on
it next to the spacebar does (or even use your PC keyboard with a
Mac). So if you're an "adder" and are feeling a bit out of sorts,
check out our guide.

As eagle-eyed
reader Thomas Shebest pointed out to me, it looks as if Apple has
removed the Mini (car) from its BMWYourIpod page. Either the Mini
isn't supported any longer, or, more likely, someone within BMW's
marketing department didn't want to dillute the Beemer brand with
their low-end cousin. Whichever -- it's still been removed from the
site.

I guess Apple got
tired on waiting for IpodYourBMW.com to go live, so they released the
information on their web site today -- the same information we broke a
few days ago. Something we hadn't heard, though, is that in addition
to all the BMWs, the system will be supported by the Mini. So yes, you
could conceivably have a Mini in your Mini.

02/01/2005 09:33 PM I had two gripes about the mini mac as the Projector Computer
(obviously that wasn't enough to not order it). 1) Lack of gigabit
ethernet. With a small laptop drive inside it'd be nice to have as
much bandwidth out as possible. Someone suggested that maybe I could
get a couple hundred megabits out of the firewire with some sort of
ethernet to firewire adapter. I haven't found that, but I remembered
that there's "IP over Firewire" in OS...

Mac mini or Windows? Why not both?
02/01/2005 09:27 PMApples new Mac mini computer, starting at $499, is an
elegant and very affordable way for Windows users to jump the fence
into what could be a greener pasture, wrotes Mike Langberg in the
Mercury News. Thats because the Mac mini is a complete
Macintosh desktop computer inside a very tiny silver and white case,
running the current Mac OS X 10.3 Panther operating system. Apple also
provides the full sweep of its excellent software. That includes the
new iLife 05 suite with iTunes for managing music, iPhoto for
organizing photos, iMovie for editing video, iDVD for putting finished
video projects on disc and GarageBand for making music, along with the
Safari browser, an e-mail program called simply Mail and the
AppleWorks suite for word processing and other home-office
tasks. [Jan 31, 2005]

ezTalker mini
ezTalker mini
03/17/2005 02:47 AMThe ezTalker mini from Tekkeon is a miniature cord-free headset
allowing for handsfree communication using a Bluetooth mobile phone
with a range up to 30 feet.
The ezTalker mini connects to any Bluetooth v1.1 mobile phone and
supports both headset and handsfree profiles and comes with a power
adapter, ezEarhook, 3 ezFit Earpieces in different sizes, and a User
Guide. The ezTalker mini is small, measuring only 0.85" x 2.1" x 1"
and weighing only 0.5 ounces (14g) making it comfortable to wear for
long periods of time. The unobtrusive optional ezEarhook for
over-the-ear, hands-free communication, can be added or removed from
the headset and can be worn on either ear or simply not at all (Spymac
preferred using the ezTalker mini without the earhook).
Using the headset is simple and straightforward and can be done by
charging the headset, pairing it with the phone and fitting the
headset with the appropriately sized ear piece or attaching the
earhook. The pairing process was straightforward and took less than a
minute.
Spymac was incredibly impressed with the headset's sound quality and
performance. The ezTalker mini provides clear, high quality
communication and is equipped with a chip antenna to ensure high
quality audio. The in-ear speaker sits comfortably inside the ear to
precisely direct sound to the ear canal, and the headset's
unidirectional microphone is positioned to accurately direct speech,
while minimizing background noise. Compared to Motorola's Bluetooth
Headset, there really is no comparison as the ezTalker sounds better
to the user and doesn't pick up the background noise, making for
clear, concise conversation.
The ezTalker mini features a rechargeable lithium polymer battery that
can be charged by plugging the power adapter directly into the
headset. The headset's battery will provide 5 hours of talk time and
120 hours of standby time. According to Tekkeon, charging time is
approximately 2 hours. The power adapter is slim and compact compared
to other Bluetooth headset power adapters and has a longer cord,
measuring 6 feet compared to the typical 3 foot cords on other
Bluetooth headset power adapters.
The headset features rubber plug cover for the power adapter jack,
easy access to volume and mute and last number redial at the side of
the headset, a multifunction button gives one-touch access to call
answer, call end, call reject, last number redial, voice-activated
dialing and power. There are also several visual and audible
indicators to let the user know if the headset is on or if the battery
is getting low.
The ezTalker mini is ebony and silver and ships within 48 hours from
Tekkeon's online store for $79.99.
Pros:
Excellent speaker sound
Eliminates background noise
Small, lightweight, comfortable
Removable earhook
Cons:
No hold button

The Mac Mini Arrives
The Mac Mini Arrives
03/29/2005 05:04 PM
So
we ordered a Mac Mini last month. Then, last week, we get a box from
"ACI," which we astutely reversed engineered to "Apple Computer Inc."
The excitement built as we opened the box and pulled away the paper
packing material...and then pulled away some more...and some
more...and some more.
In the end, as the above picture shows, we got a keyboard and a
mouse at the bottom of a big box. The amount of packaging they used
to ship that keyboard and mouse was criminal. The actual Mini arrived
a week after that.
Speaking of which, a couple thoughts:
I was really surprised at how small the Mini actually is.
Pictures do not do it justice. If someone wanted to work on the same
machine at work or at home, it would be perfectly reasonable to pick
it up off the desk at the end of the day, and put it in a briefcase or
even a large purse, and just carry it home. If you think you
need a laptop, maybe you just need a Mini and two monitors.
Joe worked with it for a day while his machine was getting a
new power supply. It was Joe's first real working experience with the
vaunted OS X. In the end, he said he was actually less likely
to buy a Mac, simply for the fact that it did nothing that his Gentoo Linux machine couldn't
do.
That said, the Mini is awfully cool to look at. Still doesn't get
me all giddy for a Mac, but it's better than an Etch-a-Sketch, at any
rate.
