Bruce Sterling interviews
01/07/2004 06:12 PMTwo exciting and thought-provoking Bruce Sterling interviews are
online today: an hour-long MP3 of an interview with
Massi
ve Change on the University of Toronto's CIUT radio and a long
interview on the future of everything with Mike "Godwin's Law" Godwin
in the libertarian mag, "Reason."
reason: Blogging seems to have taken a place in the culture that used
to be occupied by fanzines, and maybe by the science fiction
magazines.
Sterling: It had its apotheosis in people like Cory Doctorow [author
of Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom] and other writers who really
aren’t that interested in the old paper world. Cory actually
publishes stuff electronically, and blogging is his Weird Tales. He is
of a generation sufficiently divorced from the old pulps that he’s
the dolphin among mesosaurs here.

05/20/2004 05:22 PMSteve Oberg, Electronic Resources Librarian & Assistant
Professor at Taylor University,
posted the following statistics to the WEB4LIB mailing list
today.
"Taylor University's Zondervan Library serves a mostly
undergraduate student population of about 1,700. We have four
wireless-enabled laptops available for checkout for general purpose
uses including web browsing and library research. Our spring term is
ending and out of curiosity I decided to tally up the circulation
stats for them. It seemed by my observation that they were quite
heavily used, in spite of the fact that we also have a large computer
lab and several thin client workstations, but I wanted to know
specifics.
I found out that for the spring term (about 90 days in length),
three out of the four laptops averaged close to 170 checkouts each.
The fourth laptop was out of commission for most of the time. The
total number of circulations for all of them was just under 500. I'm a
mathematical ignoramus but I think that averages out to about 5 1/2
circulations per day."
Lesson for all types of libraries: those kids are going to get out
into the real world (public libraries) and the work force (special
libraries) and their kids (school libraries) are going to expect
wireless access. And that's not even counting today's adults that are
already sitting at Panera every morning, surfing while sipping.
And they're all getting used to access information anywhere on
portable devices.
They are coming... to your library....

04/29/2004 01:56 AMOkay, the experiment is officially over; you can go back to being
yourselves here (as of right now). Which one was I? The one who was
myself - not the Alpha, not the Omega, not even the Tau Kappa Epsilon.
I guess, most of all, I wanted to break the trend of personal belief
bashing around these parts. You can claim to be me, but you're still
not - just as I am not you. We're all each other, individuals...
except for that one guy....

Lenny Bruce CD retrospective
Lenny Bruce CD retrospective

Xeni Jardin:
Newsweek's Brian Braiker writes about a newly released
collection of work by comic legend Lenny Bruce.
If a comic gets onstage and tells his audience "I am not a comedian,"
he'd better say something important -- or really damn funny. Lenny
Bruce -- the hepcat who took his act from L.A. strip clubs to Carnegie
Hall, redefining stand-up in the process -- did both. Now, nearly 40
years after a fatal drug overdose, a dizzyingly complete six-CD
collection of his trailblazing routines has been released.
"Lenny Bruce: Let the Buyer Beware" spans his career from his
promising first performance in 1948 to the ravings of a haunted,
hunted man the day before his death in 1966. The warts-and-all
portrait includes hours of previously unreleased material and
chronicles Bruce as he tilts against hypocrisy ("Censorship on the
Steve Allen Show"), racism ("How to Relax Your Colored Friends at
Parties") and religion ("Religions, Inc.").

Angry Commuter Parks Across Rail Line
(AP)
05/20/2004 04:07 PMAP - When Simon Taylor was told that a train would not stop at his
station, the distressed commuter parked his car on the track. Taylor,
47, admitted in court Thursday that he had obstructed the line which
runs between London and Eastbourne on the south coast, in violation of
the Malicious Damages Act of 1861.

Train Operators Like Commuter Appeal of
Wi-Fi
04/02/2005 12:51 AM Train trade magazine reports on Wi-Fi and Internet on the rails: The
article has a remarkably optimistic tone about the future of train
access stating that most rail riders will have Internet access in five
to 10 years. The piece walks through developments of the last year,
including PointShot's significant partnership with Parsons
Transportation Group, a major rail builder. But beyond the passenger
side, rail operators will see important telemetry and operations
advantages, such as precisely tracking train location and on-board
seat sales. Two rail systems that I haven't seen previously discussing
adding Internet access are listed in this article: Trinity Railway
Express, which runs light rail in Dallas and Ft. Worth; and Caltrain,
the San Francisco to San Jose rail line....

Angry old man
Angry old man
12/22/2004 01:49 AMI had a moment the other day where I realized I was getting old.
And not just having a creaking back or something, I was actually
decrying a new technology, in a "get the hell off my lawn with your
crazy electronic scooters!" way.
Those new automated supermarket self-checkout machines that let you
buy food and bag it yourself? I don't like them. Even though I own a
zillion gadgets and love that technology makes our lives easier, for
some reason I actually like the interactions with my local grocery
store's staff as they check and bag my stuff and would hate to see
those jobs go. I even go to a local
supermarket chain that costs slightly more but has a 1950's
service-is-king quality about it (they have better food choices
too).
Then I thought about similar systems I do like. At the
airport, I really like the self-check in vs. waiting in line for 45
minutes to get my ticket in 30 seconds from a human. I realized it was
probably since my interactions with airline personel are usually slow
and unpleasant that I prefer a machine.
But the folks at my supermarket are nice and always helpful to the
point that I wish they weren't replaced by computers.
Damn kids, and your new-fangled checkout machines.
