Tagging's power law

Tagging's power law

Tagging's power law 02/05/2005 09:53 PM

Ben Hyde looks at four popular bookmarks at del.icio.us and plots how many times each is tagged with the same word. E.g, BoingBoing is tagged as "blog" 200 times and as "news" 90 times. The curve is that of a classic power law: The most frequently used tags are used waaaay more frequently than lesser-used tags. Ben stresses that four bookmarks don't constitute a significant sample, but wouldn't we expect a folksonomy to assume the shape of a power law distribution? [Technorati tags: tags taxonomy]...

Mac - Power + x86?

Mac - Power + x86? 06/05/2005 11:19 PM

CNET has set the Internet abuzz by reporting that Apple is going to jump from Power to x86 silicon. I think it’s believable, porting the software doesn’t seem like that big a deal. Here’s a personal sidelight: Last year I was chatting with a very senior IBM person that I’d just met, who smirked at my PowerBook and said “You know, we make more money on every one of those than Apple does.” Remember, he was real senior and we’d just met. Those kinds of stories are for sure going to get back to Apple and they’re going to be real irritating. Look at it this way: once Apple makes the first big step away from Power, if they don’t like Intel’s attitude or Intel’s performance or Intel’s pricing, they can walk across the street to AMD. Or for that matter back to IBM, who might have become a little more humble and hungry. [Update: Several people have written to point out that the IBM person was probably wrong, since the G4 in the PowerBooks is made by Motorola/Freescale, not IBM. But I think the point about attitude stands.]

How much power does your PC need?

How much power does your PC need? 09/08/2004 05:15 AM

Thanks to Lockergnome for the link. I am going to relate a story to you that will have some of you smiling and some of you saying hey revoke his geek status. I have worked in the electronics field for 20 years and work within prescribed power constraints all the time. Thus you would have thought that when it came to my own PC's that I would have figured it out sooner than I did when I started to have some weird problems.

I went to work and was talking to my trusted co-worker Steve who is 20 years my senior and knows his computers. I told Steve of the performance issues I was having with one of my systems. We went over it in detail and then he asked me a crucial question. How many hard-drives you have in that machine? I replied innocently 6 plus a CDR and DVD Writer. He then asked what size power supply I had in it? I then knew in a instant where he was headed. So as I went home that night with my tail between my legs I got to wondering how bad it was.

Pulling out my calculator and visiting a dozen or so websites to pull stats on power consumption I gulped pretty hard when the numbers came up 450 watts. I broke open the box and you guessed it their to my dismay was in bold print 250 watts rated power.

The next day I dropped in to a local computer store and purchased the biggest power supply they had on the shelf 550 watts and brought it home and swapped the 250 out. Sure enough as soon as I fired up the machine I could tell the hard-drives where spinning up faster etc. Performance problem went away instantly.

Lesson here is those of you power users that have a scrawny 250 watt power supply in your chassis you better head over to the referenced site and see if you too are running a little lean on total watts. [Power Supply Wattage Calculator]

Power law rulez 12/17/2004 06:33 PM
Not at all unsurprisingly, the Finnish blog world also adheres to Shirky's Power Law. Most blogs have less than ten readers, as measured by the Pinseri aggregator.

The image to the right was made by Peter of Nätkreatur and included here without permission (because he does not have any contact information on his blog; let me know if it's okay to keep it here). I found it from the Pinseri discussion on the new bloglist.

Everyone interested in the recent discussion of "blogging inner circles" and "the undemocratic nature of blogs" should read Shirky's article. The fact that some people get naturally selected as the "top" bloggers comes from the freedom to choose whom to read.

To quote Shirky: Inequality occurs in large and unconstrained social systems for the same reasons stop-and-go traffic occurs on busy roads, not because it is anyone's goal, but because it is a reliable property that emerges from the normal functioning of the system. The relatively egalitarian distribution of readers in the early years had nothing to do with the nature of weblogs or webloggers. There just weren't enough blogs to have really unequal distributions. Now there are.

power_assist.jpgSince the word of the day seems to be penis stretching, we thought we'd give it the ol' college dropout tug ourselves. Mike Salvini of Matters Of Size.com offers the 'Power Assist,' a solid wooden tool designed to help you meet your maximum penis stretching potential. For just $50, you too can have your own one-piece ash Power Assist to perform stretches like the "Base Twist," the "Bow and Arrow," and the "Tunica Fulcrum." If you follow the hyperlink, you can even watch some videos of the sponge-tearing moves in action, as well as some drawings of a man pulling his penis that look like the worst vector graphics game Prodigy* never got around to making.

I think they missed a real branding opportunity here as the 'Boner Honer.' (Thanks, Andrew!)

This is a great book for all practitioners of Information Architecture. It doesn't matter if you are new to the discipline or an experienced architect, you'll still learn lots of useful stuff from Christina. The traditional subjects of IA are presented in a refreshing point of view, and it explains subjects that nobody before had revealed, with clarity and detail. It's also very fun to read.

Ad Hoc Categorizations and the Emergence of Context Effects: "We discuss how marketers may actively affect categorization processes to increase product appeal, for example, in brand extensions and other category-based product evaluations."

I am looking at Ad-hoc categories (and came across the link above) and what they mean for information architecture.

Ad-hoc categories are categories like "things to take on a camping trip" - they can be created immediately and form a category, even if they didn't exist before. I believe that's the definition.

They have specific properties (for example, their members can have nothing in common other than the fact of their membership, while still showing gradation-of-membership effects.), and are already being used on the web (for example Amazon's "People who bought this book also bought" looks like an ad-hoc category.)

Of course, your copy of Women, Fire and Dangerous Things has some things to say about ad hoc categories, and Lawrence W. Barsalou did research talking about how these are goal-derived categories (I look at ad-hoc categories as a bit broader than goal-derived categories. The Amazon example isn't goal-derived, for example, but it's ad-hoc.).

I'm just starting my investigations into this particular intersection of information architecture and cognitive psychology, any ideas are very welcome.
