Philipp Lenssen's Google Blogoscoped shows the results of a tool that "checks Google for the longest occurrences of strings from a text on the web, and then turns it into a link." I.e., if you run your page through it, it finds any phrases that have a significant number of hits in Google, and links each phrase to its top return. (I think.) Cool idea. Alas, Philipp writes that the tool is too slow to be made public, although he offers to run it by hand if you send him email, which I hope for his sake vast numbers of...

Google Library Used To Undercut Google
Print

Google Library Used To Undercut Google
Print
06/17/2005 03:33 PM
Last month, in discussing how publisher s were angry at Google for its book scanning project, we noted that Google had decided to scan some books without the publisher's permission, citing fair use rights. It turns out the situation is a bit more complex. What really appears to have happened is the collis ion of two different book scanning projects. The first, Google Print, was where Google partnered with publishers and promised them that the scanned books would (a) help sell more books and (b) more importantly, allow them to get ad revenue associated with contextual ads alongside any pages that people viewed. However, soon afterwards, Google tied this project with their Google Library project, where they were partnering with libraries to scan all of their books. In those cases, there was no revenue sharing argument. The benefit for the libraries is that Google pays the expense of digitizing their entire collection, which the library then gets to use. Of course, there's a potential conflict here, as Google can scan a library book, even though the publisher of the book refused to take part in Google Print -- or, even if they agreed to take part, but now they won't get the revenue share from the ads. In some sense, again, it comes down to a question of "ownership." The publishers view ownership from the intellectual property point of view, saying that they own the words, and no one can do anything with them without permission. The libraries, on the other hand, are viewing ownership in the more tangible sense, along with the right of first sale -- saying that, if they own the physical books, they should have the rights to do what they want with them. It's a fine line, of course, but given the way the courts have been acting lately, it would seem likely that they would side with the publishers -- and claim that the libraries were violating the publishers' rights in digitizing the books in the first place.

I missed this until I came across it a Susan Crawford's site, but apparently Google is starting up an Internet phone service. The TimesOnline article bases this on an employment ad looking for a “strategic negotiator” to help the company to provide a “global backbone network.” So, if Microsoft is trying to expand by getting Windows into our living rooms, perhaps Google is trying to get itself inserted wherever there's a telephone...including wifi phones, if bastards like Verizon let up their headlock on state legislatures. Advanced Google syntax

Advanced Google syntax 07/05/2004 06:17 AM
Here's a good guide to some undocumented and/or obscure Google search operators:
If you start your query with allinurl:, Google restricts results to those containing all the query terms you specify in the URL. For example, [ allinurl: google faq ] will return only documents that contain the words "google" and "faq" in the the URL. This functionality can also be obtained through the Advanced Web Search page, under Occurrences.

In URLs, words are often run together. They need not be run together when you're using allinurl:.

In Google News, the operator allinurl: will return articles whose titles include the terms you specify.

Thanks to inspiration from Brent / Net News Wire, I made an RSS feed out of the top ten queries.  I'm not really comfortable with its appearance but I'm working on it.

Note: This is very loosely tested, only looked at in Radio's Aggregator, and could break other tools.  I'll qa more tomorrow.

Tomorrow the changes will be much more under the hood as I (hopefully) get the phrase searching working.

Excel Web Queries 08/27/2004 03:44 PM

Updating Excel From the Web: Really great article on Excel Web Queries. Users always want to get data in Excel for some reason. Web queries are a rock-simple way to let them do this.

Web queries essentially let Excel read data in from an HTML table. Excel can call a URL, parse the table that the URL produces, and load that as rows and columns. Additionally, you can get Excel to prompt the users for querystring parameters without doing any VBA, and using some extensions to HTML, you can format the data, add formulas, filter boxes, etc.

With Web queries, you can get a lot of client-side functionality for your Web app without doing a blessed thing, really. Microsoft really hit this one out of the park.

Trackbacks, Queries, and Encoding 05/26/2004 10:34 AM
This morning, I got a trackback from a Korean weblog.  Unfortunately, if you look at how a typical trackback is sent, you see that character encoding information is not provided. Something to think about the next time you are tempted to think that you can get queries for free.  While both HTTP and XML provide mechanisms for defining encoding, support in widely deployed implementations is much better in XML than in straight HTTP. URI's seem to be converging on UTF-8, albeit at an excruciatingly slow pace.  Don't leave this to chance - if you are defining a GenerativeNaming scheme today, make this explicit. If you are defining a protocol based on HTTP POST, encourage the use of the charset parameter on the Content-Type header.  Require it if you can.
