Security Through Obscurity Thwarted By
Google
02/05/2005 09:48 PM

There have been tons of stories about students' private data accidentally being placed online, so yet another story about that isn't particularly newsworthy. However, what's amusing about this story, found by the Raw Feed is the response from officials at Johns Hopkins University to the information leak. The leak was first found by a student who did a Google search, and discovered her info was linked from the search engine results. So, with that in mind, you wouldn't really expect a school official to defend the "security through obscurity" practice, but that's exactly what he did: "The file was in a very obscure place. You would have had to gone looking for them." No, you would just have to use Google, which already did the looking part for you.

Unlinkable NYT doomed to

07/14/2004 03:38 PM
The NYT's registration system and expiring pages have doomed them to google-obscurity. Wired News argues that they've gone from being the paper of record to a Web-era irrelevancy, and all to protect a Lexis-Nexis agreement and to bring in two to three percent of the digital division's profits.
But recently, when I googled the terms "Iraq torture prison Abu Ghraib" -- certainly one of the most intensively covered news stories of the year -- the first New York Times article was the 295th search result, trailing the New Yorker, Guardian, ABC and CBS News, New York Post, MSNBC, Slate, CNN, Sydney Morning Herald, Denver Post, USA Today, Bill O'Reilly on FoxNews and a host of others news sites.

I work in a semi-public area, and I didn't have a way to lock down my new Mac Mini [to prevent theft]. I needed a way to have it function, but not be too visible. But I had an old Dell case I wasn't using anymore and the gears started turning... after gutting the drive bays, it was almost a perfect fit. I figure nobody would take a second look at this old box. Here are the results.

Democracy By Obscurity 08/23/2004 02:21 PM
It turns out that, not only are the makers of electronic voting machines practicing security by obscurity, those who certify the machines are just as secretive. Call it democracy by obscurity. The certification companies, who are hired by the e-voting machine companies (conflict of interest?) won't reveal what they do to test the machines or the results of any such tests. So, while the e-voting machine companies continue to insist that they're secure, they won't show us how the systems work for others to prove that its secure, and the only people who are certifying the machines are secure are being paid by the vendors themselves and won't reveal their testing methods or results. It's the "just trust us" form of counting votes.

Froogle Zen

Froogle Zen 05/02/2004 11:06 AM
BoingBoing reader Bobby points out that Froogle displays a list of recently-found things people have used the online service to successfully seek and buy. The resulting list is total funky Dada webzen that makes you want to refresh for hours. It's a little like those Target ads that smush together unlikely combinations of things one can buy at Target. So, just now -- pure poetry:
Fleece ferret hammock, golf balls, Kung-fu hamster.
Cheesecake, gas blower, belly button rings.
Barebone PC, donut maker, mouth guard.
Matrix sunglasses, cookie jar, stuffed monkey.
Zen alarm clock, hair bows.
Red dress, beef jerky, snake light.

Now Google May Have Lost The Froogle
Name Too...
07/23/2004 06:30 PM
It appears that Google has been having an awful lot of trouble lately with the names of its services and trademark issues. There was the company in the UK that complai ned they were using Gmail already when Google's Gmail came out. Then, there was the whole attack of the alien Googles thing earlier this month. Now, it turns out they have lost an attempt to take away the domain name Froogles from a guy who runs a shopping site there (which I imagine just had its traffic shoot through the roof, for all he complains about how troublesome this lawsuit is). Of course, Google runs a shopping site called Froogle. However, in this case, the challenge was whether or not the name Froogles was confusingly similar to Google (not Froogle). There's a pretty good reason for this. Froogles went online well before Froogle did, so if anyone has a claim it might be in the other direction. The fact that Froogles was not found to be confusingly similar to Google could open up the possibility of a reverse case where the owner of Froogles could claim that Froogle violates his own trademark. Yes, the lawyers are drooling. Of course, the most likely solution is that Google will end up paying off this guy and just buying the Froogles domain name to avoid all these other problems. In the meantime, it's a bit amusing that a Google search on Froogles doesn't have the Froogles.com site anywhere near the top (however, before the conspiracy theories start, Yahoo's search doesn't either).

Amazon A9: Froogle Competitor? 10/28/2003 11:08 PM
AP: Amazon.com invades Google's turf with Silicon Valley startup.Seattle-based Amazon has dubbed its search startup "A9" and set up offices in Palo Alto, not far from Google's Mountain View headquarters. A9 hopes to launch in October with 30 employees and grow much larger as it develops a search engine that will be licensed to other Web sites, said spokeswoman Alison Diboll. [...] Unlike Google, A9 isn't trying to develop an all-purpose search engine that indexes billions of Web pages. Instead, the startup is focusing on a search engine sweet spot -- e-commerce.The article is very vague so it's hard to get a handle one exactly what A9 is, but it does sound a lot like Froogle, Google's shopping search engine. (Thanks, Ahmad.)...

Google's Overblown Froogle Controversy

Google's Overblown Froogle Controversy 06/09/2004 01:16 AM
It looks like some folks are making a big deal out of the fact that Google searches on certain terms put links to the Froogle comparison shopping engine at the top of the results list. It's unclear why this is suddenly an issue - as they've been doing this ever since they relaunched their site a few months ago. The links are pretty clearly separate from the actual search results (though, not as separate as the regular ads) and are mostly designed to take a guess at whether or not the user meant to search in Froogle. They do the same thing with Google News. If the search term recently appeared in a news story, they'll throw the Google News link at the top as well. This seems more helpful than "evil" as the article suggests.
