A quick sketch of what I've been up

06/17/2005 03:22 PMGod, I have so much I want to write about. I want to tell you guys
all In the City
Interactive and what apparently smart people were saying about
convergence. I want to tell you all about the debate I had with
BPI-chief Steve Redmond and Factory records' grouchy swearing pop
svengali, Tony Wilson. I want to tell you all about the Geek dinner
for Robert Scoble that
I attended with about a thousand other people, and where I had too
many margaritas and scabbed Lucky Strikes off Hugh Macleod. I want to talk
about hanging out with Joe
Clark, Andy Budd and the
@media folks at Pizza Express last night.
I want to talk about the complete absence of news about my father,
and how much it's preying on my mind and about the mini-reunion I'm
going to this afternoon for people who were present at the very first
few blogmeets in
London, five years ago this weekend. (Full blogmeets to follow.)
And then there's all the chat that I'd like to be doing about what I
should be doing in San Francisco (arriving a week today, free up your
diaries), and the fifty ideas for posts and things-to-build that are
clogging up my Ideas for things.txt file on my laptop and which
I see little prospect of ploughing through...
But no time right now. Sorry. I swear to God that I'll get
some of it done over the next forty-eight hours or so. One
thing I will mention though is what I'm doing tomorrow morning - where
I'll be extemporising at length about corporate weblogs on BBC Radio
4's Broadcasting
House between 9am and 10am. As ever, if you find these things
interesting, you can get a pretty much moment-by-moment guide to my
life by subscribing to my Flickr
photostream, which currently includes photos of me in a radio
studio being interviewed and a stunningly realised representation
of Andy
Budd as exotic Spanish dancer.

please give sketch some mojo
please give sketch some mojo
02/01/2005 09:52 PMI feel like I'm on a roller coaster right now . . .
My cat Sketch will be eleven years old in April. I've had him since
he was five weeks old.
Friday night, I came home from ACME, and he was acting strangely:
he was in the hallway (not on my bed where he usually is) breathing
very heavily and rapidly. There was something clearly wrong with
him.
Saturday morning, I took him to the vet, and she took some Xrays.
They showed that his lungs were about 1/2 full of fluid, and none of
the vets could figure out why. They think it may be something with his
heart.
He spent the weekend at this 24 hour emergency vet, where they gave
him some oxygen and some other medication, to help clear out his
lungs. They took more Xrays yesterday evening, and there wasn't any
significant change.
This afternoon, the vet told me that he hasn't responded to any of
the medication, so tomorrow morning I'm taking him to get a cardiac
ultrasound. The vet told me and Anne that he should be okay to stay
with us overnight, so Anne brought him home, where he can sleep on our
bed with us, and be close to his brother, Biko.
I just got back from ACME (the running joke is that I secretly live
under the stage there now) and Sketch is in my bedroom with Anne. He's
really struggling. He hasn't gotten worse (if he does, I will take him
right back to the emergency vet), but he's not getting better, either.
If the ultrasound shows that he's got some heart thing that I can't
remember the name of right now, he'll get on medication right away,
and it should clear out his lungs and put him back together.
But if it's inconclusive, or shows something worse, I'm not going
to let him suffer because I can't say goodbye. I hope I don't have to
make that decision, and I've been appealing to The Universe all day to
give Sketch a natural 20 on his saving throw. Please?
He's such a tough little guy, I never thought that he would get
sick like this, and so suddenly. Biko is the runt of their litter, and
Felix has been in and out of the vet so many times, they're naming a
boat after him . . . but I love Sketch so much, I don't want him to
go. It would mean a lot to me if anyone who reads this would take a
moment and send Sketch some kitty mojo, especially to his heart and
lungs.
You can call him "Tubby," or "Fatty," or "Fat Boy," or "Chunk,"
too, because he responds to all those names. He's my tubby little
guy.
Thanks.

Find This Object Based On My Sketch
Find This Object Based On My Sketch
04/15/2004 06:35 PMIt seems like there are a lot of stories about "search" these days,
but most of the focus seems to be on searching based on keywords -
even when looking for images. What if you want to
sketch the object you're trying to find and
have the search engine understand that and locate the object you
(probably badly) drew? It seems that that's exactly what some
researchers are working on. I haven't had much luck getting the
working search
engine to find me anything, but the idea seems like it could be
useful for someone who has a steadier hand than I do (actually, it
appears the server might be down right now).

02/18/2004 09:23 PMGraphic design and deadlines often seem to go hand in hand, so most
designers welcome software that helps them do their work faster.
CorelDraw 12, part of the new CorelDraw Graphics Suite 12 software
package, recognizes rough shapes and drawings sketched onscreen with a
mouse or a graphics pen, instantly turns them into smooth curves and
lines, and properly positions them in a document.
