Review: Novell's Openexchange Server is
powerful, versatile
02/05/2005 09:48 PM

A scalable, stable, secure software stack for small and medium-sized business network services is hard to develop in-house or integrate from piecemeal components. To integrate it all with a single sign-on for users requires even more work. Enter Novell's new SUSE Linux-based OpenExchange, a packaged, full-featured, secure, all-encompassing operating environment.

There is a joy to be derived from well-executed engineering. I've spent some time on this and other OSDN sites reviewing gadgets -- in particular mp3 players. All of them have suffered from some form of what maybe should be called iPod envy. Not so the Squeezebox, made by Slim Devices, Inc. I wanted to write up my experiences with it, but more importantly shine a spotlight on the way the company approaches software development and uses free software to advance its bottom-line goals of producing what many consider to be the reference implementation for an outboard mp3 player.

Quad Opteron Server Review

Quad Opteron Server Review 12/08/2003 08:20 PM
Ace's Hardware has published an in-depth server review featuring a 4-way Opteron 848 server, 2-way Opteron 248, and 2-way 3.06 GHz Pentium 4 Xeon DP (1 MB L3). The benchmarks include a number of real-world Java application server benchmarks, Apache HTTP benchmarking, MySQL datamining, and more. The effect of NUMA-aware optimizations on scalability is also considered, as well as the performance differences associated with 64-bit (AMD64) binaries over legacy x86 binaries.

China introduces the Enhanced Versatile
Disc
11/19/2003 01:40 AM
Just to make this whole mess over which standard will succeed the DVD, a Chinese business consortium and two Chinese DVD manufacturers are rolling out the Enhanced Versatile Disc, or EVD. The idea is to have a homegrown standard to avoid paying royalties to non-Chinese electronics congolomerates that developed the DVD. Which certainly makes some economic sense if you're a manufacturer, but why a consumer would choose an EVD player over a DVD player is somewhat less clear. EVD players are going to have to be a lot cheaper to convince people that they're not just better off buying a DVD player. Read [Thanks, Jon]...

Review: UnixWare 7.1.4 is suitable for
basic server duty
08/10/2004 08:31 AM
UnixWare 7.1.4 is the latest in a long line of Unix releases from The SCO Group. It is a stable and mature Unix, with a variety of basic servers included, such as the Apache Web server and Squid, and is available in both single-user desktop-oriented versions and server versions. It has reasonable support for hardware, good documentation, and a nice integrated management utility that offers unified administration of the OS, hardware, and servers. Performance as a server platform is good, supporting a number of TCP sessions and Web server users, and file transfer performance is competitive with Linux and Windows platforms. However, as a desktop OS or file/print server, UnixWare is hard to recommend over competitors.

Novell's definite plus

Novell's definite plus 04/17/2004 03:41 AM
The last few issues have tended to downplay the activities at this year's BrainShare conference, but that's not really the case. As a number of you have pointed out, there was a new feeling of accomplishment and a sense of expectancy that hasn't been seen in such quantity for a dozen years or more. Novell is staking out a position unequivocally and most of the faithful are pleased.

Novell announced its second quarter earnings last week and, as frequently in the past, I waded through the legalese looking for clues as to the direction of the business and what it means to NetWare users. Evidently, though, in addition to computer software Novell is now in the business of obfuscation.

Day 3 at BrainShare 2005 was another busy day. Last but not least, I was able to meet one-on-one with two Novell executives: CIO Debra Anderson and VP Jeff Hawkins.

CEO Jack Messman kicked off Day 2 at Brainshare 2005 with a confident keynote that recounted promises made last year, Novell's execution of those, and a flurry of new product announcements. If Novell is acting in desperation, as some have suggested of their move to Linux, it doesn't show itself in their public face. NewsForge also spent some time on the exhibition floor and a lot of time in the press room, where Novell was conducting rapid-fire one-on-one briefings for the media.

RSS 1.0 Plugin 03/11/2003 09:43 AM
It's always been a little odd, quite frankly, that Blosxom's not sported an RSS 1.0 flavour :-\ given my work in the RSS 1.0 space.

With a little Blosxom plug-in magic and a smattering of template flavouring, my weblog now sports a full-blown RSS 1.0 flavour featuring use of the content, trackback, and admin modules.

It was all just a matter of producing that ever-so-slighly-annoying <items /> sequence without building too much bloat into Blosxom itself.

I've been meaning to talk about this . . . but it's such an incredibly divisive issue, I've really kept my thoughts private.

I have seen this on TV just about every day for weeks, and it's really heated up since Sunday . . . and I can't just sit here silently any longer.

I have to live with myself, and living with the knowledge that I was silent about this is much worse than enduring some short-term controversy.

Best Holiday

Best Holiday 04/01/2005 01:52 AM
Today by far is my favorite holiday. It's the one day that webmasters get to be creative and do things that normally wouldn't fit with their sites general themes. For example, Google attempts a high tech way of quenching peoples thirsts, Wikipedia sells out to Britannica, a RFC is written on Morality, and much much more!

Just like last year stop by here for a constantly updated list of April Fools Day Jokes that websites pull.

MLTFO Plugin

MLTFO Plugin 12/16/2002 11:24 PM

David Raynes has written the MTMoreLifeThisFromOt hers plugin. I was totally geeked when it came out. But it doesn't work exactly how I was hoping, although it is still at version 0.1.

By every post I have created a pop-up window that has More Like This From Others for that particular entries Category. I wish that I could have done something without specifying <MTEntries category="MT Plugins">, but I guess that is my problem.

I don't get nearly enough TrackBacks. But if I did, this would definitely be very cool! :-) I have noticed that some TrackBack pings don't work, such as the one I have received from interalia.org. Maybe it has to do with the version of the RSS feed.

I hope that David Raynes comes out with version 0.2 that fixes some issues, and allows you to show the name of the Weblog the entry is from instead of just the name of the entry and the url.

I like being connected. It kind of makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

Plugin Scriptability

Plugin Scriptability 07/02/2004 11:27 AM

One reader of my previous entry (in the trackbacks) expressed concern that only Dashboard widget apps could execute native code. Well, we have an answer to that as well. You see, we're working with other browser vendors to extend the plugin API to add scriptability. See this link for more information. This means you can obviously execute native code from within any WebKit application's Web pages through the use of scriptable plugins.

Flash SWT Plugin

Flash SWT Plugin 01/22/2004 05:06 PM

When I changed web server at the end of last month, I didn't have time to move non-blog related pages and files.  Until I do, I'll post on my blog whenever someone ask for them.

Today it was the Flash SWT Plugin which I wrote long time ago.  The plugin basically allows you to play Flash animation within SWT applications and tools.  Here is a screenshot.

ZIP file with source code:

co m.docuverse.swt.flash-0.4.zip (148.48 KB)

There is really only one class you need to learn about: FlashPlayer. Below is a code snippet that will play a Flash movie.

import com.docuverse.swt.flash.FlashPlayer;
...
FlashPlayer player = new FlashPlayer(container);
player.loadMovie(0, “http://somewhere.com/movie.swf“);
...

For a complete example, scan the FlashPlayerView class source code.

I plugged Tiki into Blosxom to see how it'd fly and am giving it a whirl in this very post.
