My workstation OS: Libranet

My workstation OS: Libranet

My workstation OS: Libranet 02/05/2005 09:48 PM

All I really want in a desktop operating system is a standard KDE desktop (not heavily modified like Mandrakelinux and Red Hat), decent packaging, and a filesystem hierarchy that makes sense. Libranet fits my exact needs.

Spawn of Debian faceoff: LibraNet 2.8.1

Spawn of Debian faceoff: LibraNet 2.8.1 01/28/2004 08:42 AM
This is the fourth in a series of reviews of Debian-based distributions. The first three have covered the best known commercial distributions. The first one looked at LindowsOS 4.5. The second examined newcomer MEPIS Linux. The third was about Xandros 2.0. All three of those are more about providing a familiar environment for those coming to Linux from Windows. This one is different. LibraNet is aimed more at existing Linux users - including Debian users - than those from the Windows world.

My workstation OS: My own 12/31/2004 05:06 AM
This is an unusual article in the "My workstation OS" series. It's not about using a specific OS distribution. Indeed it's about not using any OS distribution at all. For many years now I've installed my OS from the sources. Although this is not an easy nor fast way to get an OS installed, it's the best way for getting a fully customized system that fits any individual needs and desires.

When The Work Is A Workstation

When The Work Is A Workstation 04/16/2005 11:10 PM

If you buy a work from Lucas Samaras's current show at the PaceWildenstein and Pace/MacGill galleries, you'll need $15,000 -- and a small moving truck. For your money, you'll get not just 4,432 photographs and 60 movies, but also the Mac Mini computer on which they're stored, an Apple Cinema HD display, an Ikea Hannes desk and two Design Within Reach chairs. My Workstation OS: Linspire 4.5

My Workstation OS: Linspire 4.5 03/14/2005 04:05 PM
Built on a Debian Linux core, Linspire is designed for simplicity of use, and it delivers this in spades. Linspire eliminates the need for me to be technically proficient in the nuances of Linux to successfully operate and enjoy the OS. This includes loading software, staying updated, and never seeing a command-line interface. It makes it very easy to just get on with what I have to do and not worry about the technicalities of using a Linux-based system.

My Workstation OS: Gentoo 03/19/2005 02:36 AM
After failed experiments with Slackware, a few years of SUSE, and a brief flirtation with Debian, I've been working and playing on Gentoo. I don't care for endless optimisations, and I'm not especially bothered about the bloat of a few unnecessary extra features, nor do I enjoy waiting days to update KDE -- so why do I like Gentoo? Simple: Portage package management, the hands-off approach to configuration, the excellent documentation, and the unsurpassed community support forum.

My workstation OS: FreeDOS

My workstation OS: FreeDOS 02/01/2005 08:50 PM
In battles over operating system superiority, emotions run high. Capabilities are assembled like armies and run out on discussion boards to face the flames. So let me say this now: your operating system is probably better than mine. Most modern operating systems are better than FreeDOS when considered by any objective criteria. FreeDOS doesn't multitask, doesn't surf the Internet easily, isn't great for multimedia productions, and doesn't even do Windows. But I love it anyway.

My workstation OS: SUSE Professional

My workstation OS: SUSE Professional 01/07/2005 04:23 AM
Long-time Linux users know that the kernel and most of the programs are the same across distributions, but different implementations vary in their hardware detection, default choices of basic software, package management system, availability of extra packages, third-party software, and bundled management tools. I was looking for a single distribution I could rely on as both a server and a desktop OS, and one that I could install and support remotely for clients and use at home for work and play. What I found was the powerful SUSE Professional.

One of the many myths surrounding Linux is the one about it being difficult for beginners used to Windows. One distribution that proves this is not so is Kurumin Linux, a small Brazilian Knoppix-based distro maintained by Carlos Morimoto, who has become a personality in the Brazilian Linux community. Because it is based on Knoppix, Kurumin offers solid hardware detection accuracy and works natively as a live CD, and it's much easier to install on a hard drive than Knoppix thanks to a set of installation scripts that alleviate a lot the pain in the process.

My Workstation OS: Linux From Scratch 06/05/2005 11:36 PM
Like nearly every other person who has contributed to this series, I have tinkered around with my share of Linux distributions. I happened on Linux From Scratch (LFS) about an year and a half ago. With LFS, my choices run deep into the system -- into matters such as which shell to run, what feature of glibc to use, and how to tailor boot scripts. LFS 6.0, which is what I have built my system around, comes with gcc 3.4.1 (which is used to build everything else), a fairly recent CVS build of glibc 2.3.4 (which the LFS team provides for download), kernel 2.6.8.1, and udev.

My workstation OS: PCLinuxOS Preview 8

My workstation OS: PCLinuxOS Preview 8 03/25/2005 06:56 AM
I found the GNOME desktop more appealing than KDE until I found Mandrakelinux 10. Mandrake looked good to me, from its fonts to its slide bars. On the functional side, it had some wonderful system administration tools, graphical and centralized. But for some reason Mandrake 10 didn't find my home wireless network. That led me to search for alternatives. I discovered PCLinuxOS, a free LiveCD distribution originally based on Mandrake.

Get Google Desktop to Support Firefox

Get Google Desktop to Support Firefox 12/19/2004 03:25 PM
Google recently released Google Desktop (for Windows users), as you are probably already aware. Google Desktop is a "desktop search application that provides full text search over your email, computer files, chats, and the web pages you've viewed." Great! The hang-up: the program searches web data — e.g. cached pages and bookmarks — in only one browser, Internet Explorer. Where you come in: Google has provided a feature request form and specifically the option to request support for Mozilla Firefox. Get to submitting. And if you have another minute of time to spare, offer Mozilla Thunderbird as an additional request in the "Suggestion" text box. Pinder, does this entry qualify as a spin-off to the Google Browser trilogy? Update: A F.A.Q. entry has been created by Google Desktop — possibly in response to many directed questions — with information on the current status of compatibilty between the browser and the search application.
