Open source license help needed
Open source license help needed
12/17/2004 06:33 PMEvery now and then, I get an e-mail asking me to clarify
the license associated with code that I've posted on this site, such
as my date
parsing script. I'm looking for an open source license that I can
start slapping on things to ensure people that they can use it for
whatever they want, but wading through the list of licenses is no
fun at all. Here are the features I'm looking for:
- Minimal boiler-plate. I don't want to have to
copy and paste dozens of lines of legalese in to a 30 line long
example script; my ideal license would allow me to "link it in" in a
single line ("(c) Simon Willison 2004, released under [X]
license").
- Allows commercial use. I don't care if people
make money off something I've published here.
- Encourages attribution. I don't want people
feeling they have to credit me if they reuse five lines of Python I
posted as an example somewhere, but I'm not averse to getting credited
for more substantial contributions. I don't want to make attribution a
requirement though as I'd rather people used my code and failed to
attribute me than didn't use it at all.
- Is compatible with other licenses. I often get
asked if people can include my code in other open source projects -
whatever license I use needs not to get in the way of other people's
licensing aims for their own projects.
I'm tempted to just slap a note saying "this code is in
the public domain" on everything and have done, but I'm not sure if
there are unpleasant side effects to doing so. The only thing I want
to avoid is people explicitly claiming my work as their own.
Choosing an open source license
Choosing an open source license
07/26/2004 04:04 AMThe Open Source Initiative (OSI) lists more than 50 approved open
source licenses. Each license is anywhere from slightly to vastly
unlike its neighbors. All of them are written for lawyers, not mere
mortal software developers. So how do you choose the most sensible an
open source license for your projects?

the issue of license proliferation. One step Intel would like to take
to reduce license proliferation (both internally, and externally, to
Intel) is to have the "Intel Open Source License" (aka "BSD License
with Export Notice") removed from future use as an approved OSI open
source license."

08/03/2004 10:28 AMwashingtonpost.com - Plenty of tech experts have spent years trying to
convince the general public that the Linux operating system is
becoming more of a threat to Microsoft's Windows. With the LinuxWorld
conference underway this week in San Francisco, there is finally a
sure-fire sign that this may be the case: Microsoft won't be there.

Linux and open source opportunities in
the Mideast
Linux and open source opportunities in
the Mideast
01/17/2004 10:45 PMRIYADH, Saudi Arabia -- Computers and the Internet are just starting
to penetrate the Mideast, and since most residents of most countries
here are dirt-poor, Linux and open source are "naturals" for the
region. There is also a fast-growing market for Arabic-language
commercial software (or software services based on open source
applications), and it seems that half of the region's governments have
decided their country should become "the" developer of Arabic-language
software. Saudi Arabia, where I'm writing this, is pouring massive
government funds into an effort to build a software industry. But it's
possible that cultural and political factors may be more important
than government aid in encouraging software development. If this is
so, Saudi Arabia may be wasting its money, and should look at changing
its society instead. Note: This is #5 in a series of five "Dispatches
from Saudi Arabia." You may want to see #1, #2, #3, and #4 before you
read this one.

06/21/2004 04:13 AMEugene, Ore.-based GarageGames doesn't just benefit from the open

industry that traditionally thrives on closed technology and secrets,
and where marketers often dictate development. On April 20 GarageGames
released the Torque Network Library (TNL) technology behind the Torque
Game Engine's multiplayer network code under the GPL license.
