Recently I've been working on a project that might be of interest to
other Advogato users: CIA, a system for tracking commit messages (and
eventually other things) from any open source project. When new code
is committed, the news instantly shows up on a web site, an RSS feed,
and an IRC channel.
Unlike other similar projects that focus on bringing one project's
commits to only its developers, CIA lets anyone see what development
is happening right now, regardless of where or what for.

Open Development Internally: "Following on the success of its
Eclipse open-source development platform, IBM has quietly been using a
form of open-source development internally to create technology the
company will sell commercially.
IBM calls its model Community Source, which it defines as a
collaborative, internal, open-source-style environment for developing
and testing new technology.
Danny Sabbah, vice president of strategy and technology for the IBM
Software Group, in Armonk, N.Y., said IBM is using its Community
Source model across 100 projects and 2,000 developers in the company.
These projects span the IBM Software Group, Systems Group, Research
and Global Services, he said."
Very interesting. I'd like to learn more about that. What parts of the
so called open source development process have they built into the
Community Source model? I've found that most developers have different
definitions of the open source development process (via

that bug has been fobbed off to the kernel developers and not dealt
with for at least two years - when there are more examples like this
that make using Open Source software a pain, what do you do?
Are you one of the few people with the time and money and

Well, you can say one thing
about the TooDis MPal 400F flash memory video player: your hand isn't
going to get tired watching movies on it. Well, not the hand holding
it, anyway. The flash player has a 12-hour playback time on a single
AA battery, although it must first convert all your movie files into
the MMF format that resizes them to better fit the 400F's 1.8-inch
screen. And although it's available in sizes up to 1GB, the lack of an
on-board memory slot sort of kills a lot of the potential usefulness
of the device. Still, I have to say I sort of like it. I wouldn't pay
a lot of money for it, mind you, but it's small enough to pack up and
forget until you need it -- not many of the bigger, hard-disk personal
video players are.

Korea-based iAudio (whose
products sell in the West under the Cowon and JetAudio brands) has
released a new flash MP3 player model, the U2, which is slightly
smaller than a lighter, but is still available in sizes up to
one gigabyte. All the other goodies we've come to expect from flash
players are there, too (FM receiver and recording, USB 2.0, irritating
burning sensation), and still the U2 manages a (claimed) 20 hour
battery life -- rechargeable battery, that is, not AAA like many other
flash players.
Looks okay! I've been very cool on flash players, having been
disappointed by so many for so long, but they are getting very usable
and very useful now that storage sizes have gotten affordable. At $350
it's still spendy compared to hard disk players, but come on; the
thing isn't much bigger than many players' in-line
displays.

I4U reviews the Muzio JM-200 flash player, a
run-of-the-mill music player with a few stand out features, like a
physically spinning volume wheel, two-color OLED screen, and the
ability to add your own custom graphics to the front of its display.
Other than that we're looking at what has become almost stock standard
on flash players, including an FM tuner with recording, voice and
line-in recording, and TrueBass (something so common I rarely even
bother mentioning it).
Another nice thing - and this is going to start being standard
pretty much soon - is the JM-200 is a USB host device, meaning it's
conceivable you could hook this music player directly into your camera
(or whatever) and copy over files. Oh! And you can listen from two
sets of headphones into a single unit.
I guess this isn't quite as stock standard as I had let on.

I used to hate flash memory players, but I'm coming
around, and for one single reason: they're a commodity now. Being
cheap - this Rave-MP AMP 128 reviewed by PCWorld is only $100, and
will go for even less soon - means that I can keep a flash player
around as a backup to a hard-disk player, something to take out into
the rain maybe or throw in a bag that's going to get roughed around,
and never give it a second thought. Plus 1GB SD cards a sickeningly
cheap these days (sickening when you consider how much money you spent
on flash memory in the past).
What sells the AMP 128 specifically, though? I dunno, really - the
feature set on these things is almost exactly the same these days -
but it does have that inverted-color display, which I saw in person a
few weeks back, and is actually pretty cool.
