A lot of people think that only Mac owners can use those beautiful and popular little software utilities called “widgets.” Not so my friends, not so. Long before Apple released OSX “Tiger” operating system and its impressive widget suite called “Dashboard“, a website named Konfabulator was cranking beautiful Widgets for both platforms. You can download a trial copy here and see for yourself and they even dropped the price from $29 to $19.99. The best…

burnt_powerbook.jpg imageIt's a sad fact of life that God hates Mac users. If you needed any more proof, check out these pictures of this burnt and charred 12-inch Powerbook, caught in an apartment fire, which despite the damage and encrustations is reported to still work. What can we learn from this? In a kickboxing match between Jesus and Jobs, Steve would win. I know it's shocking, but if there's one thing I've learned from Internet, it's that digital pictures cannot lie. They don't even have tongues! (Thanks, Marcus!)

P-P-P-Powerbook

P-P-P-Powerbook 05/13/2004 10:46 PM
An American Ebay seller realises a European bidder is trying to scam him out of a Powerbook (fake escrow site, hijacked ebay account), so he sends him something far better, a P-P-P-Powerbook! Now, for you non-techies here, a factory model p-p-p-powerbook weights half what it's competitors weigh, comes with an A4 screen, the latest in internet adventure software, zero boot time, a fullsize keyboard (often with Key RedundancyTM) and a state-of-the-art laser bluetooth mouse. This is technology. The seller posts to a forum and amongst the chatter people follow the package via the the Fedex tracking page and some even visit the delivery address (a barbershop/internet cafe) and take photos, video, and a seat for their hair cut. The duty tax on this particular p-p-p-powerbook is around £350 (paid for by the scammer) before he sees the package, and a few days later it's released by Customs as they watch in anticipation. A forum member arrives at the internet cafe, takes a seat and soon the package arrives. The scammer opens the box and there are angry raised voices heard. The barber doesn't understand what's wrong and asks... "Is it broken?"

PowerBook G5!? Unlikely to Appear in
the Near Future
02/05/2005 09:07 PM
CNET has posted an article highlighting various logical reasons for why the PowerBook G5 is still a pipe dream.
"...a G5 PowerBook would require compromises in size, weight and other aesthetics such as noise production. Apple, and likely most of its customers, wouldn't be willing to live with that."

Sorry guys, you'll just have to wait another year, or by an iMac G5 and an iLugger.

More on 15" Powerbook screens... 11/12/2003 01:19 PM

This is probably well known by now, but according to a friend of mine who is still trying to work out whether to get the 12" or 15" Apple Powerbook, he's been advised by a man he talked to at a London Apple Centre that a 15" variety will take longer to be delivered because Apple have accepted there's a problem with the screen getting brighter spots on it. Apparently they've definitely ceased production while they look into it. This is probably extremely good news for those of us who have a Powerbook with this problem, and it might explain why I have still not received my return voucher, over a week and a half after I rang them up. I'll be checking up on this later, but I thought I should probably share the news. If anyone has more information on the subject, please feel free to add links in the comments.

New Powerbook is a bit spotty

New Powerbook is a bit spotty 11/11/2003 01:12 AM
As we mentioned last week, a sizeable number of people have been complaining to Apple about the new 15-inch aluminum Powerbooks they've bought, saying that mysterious white spots that won't go away have started appearing on their screens. On the off-chcance that you were wondering what this looked like, here's a photo of one person's defective Powerbook....

I've ordered my PowerBook

I've ordered my PowerBook 12/20/2003 07:22 PM

Thanks to everyone who provided advice on buying a Mac - it provide incredibly helpful in making my selection. I placed my order this afternoon for a 15" 1 GHz PowerBook with a SuperDrive, backlit keyboard and 60 GB of Hard Disk space. I went with the minimum possible memory (256 MB) and plan to buy an extra 512 MB from Crucial (for less than half the price Apple charge) in a few weeks time.

I saved a serious chunk of money thanks to the Student Developer program (tip off from Leonard Lin), which for a $99 membership fee and proof of student status gives you up to 20% off your first hardware purchase from the Apple store. In total, I saved nearly a thousand pounds ($1500+) on the cost of the same machine in the UK. Truth be told, it was the amount I would save by buying here that inspired me to look at PowerBooks rather than iBooks in the first place.

Delivery in 2-3 business days. I can hardly wait.

Powerbook G5 Next Tuesday?

Powerbook G5 Next Tuesday? 06/06/2005 12:08 AM

There is every reason in the world that this could be fake, but it won't hurt to go ahead and put those Powerbooks on eBay. Dated June 7th, this press release talks about 'Powerbook G5' models, with faster processors (duh) and better screens, still inside an aluminum case. We'll reproduce the text after the jump, but you can look at the 'Google Cache' on this guy's website for signs it's a spoof. (Thanks, Art!)

Update: So yeah, not likely. Lots of you have pointed out good reasons why this isn't legit, but I've copied the most comprehensive from reader 'John' below the press release after the jump.

Apple Announces PowerBook G5 for August Availibility
The Highly Anticipitated G5 Portables are Here, Featuring Low-power G5 Processors and HD Screens Across the Line

CUPERTINO, California—June 7, 2005—Apple® today announced the upcoming availibility of it's highly anticipitated PowerBook G5 line of personal computers, featuring low-power G5 cores running up to 2.3 GHz, with 12, 15, and 17 inch high definition widescreen displays, all enclosed in a thin aluminum shell. The PowerBook G5's blazingly fast PowerPC G5 processor makes it the ideal computer for professional work on the go. The new high definition widescreen displays give you all the working space you need to watch and edit high definition video without hooking up an external display. All models will ship with Apple's new Mac OS 10.4 Tiger preinstalled. Best of all, this power is available at prices starting at just $1,699.

Apple ignited the personal computer revolution in the 1970s with the Apple II and reinvented the personal computer in the 1980s with the Macintosh. Today, Apple continues to lead the industry in innovation with its award-winning desktop and notebook computers, OS X operating system, and iLife and professional applications. Apple is also spearheading the digital music revolution with its iPod portable music players and iTunes online music store.

The 'Google Cache' [Mac]

I don't buy that "cache" announcing the G5 PowerBook for a second. The most convincing error for me is that the first sentence incorrectly uses "it's", but you might be more convinced by the following: - Google cache pages use valid URLs, not "http://64.233.167.104.search.q[...]" - The typography and CSS IDs are completely different from current Apple PR. - The descriptive paragraph lacks an "About Apple" heading.

Compared to the last PowerBook press release, which is here:
http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2005/jan/31powerbook.html

...we learn:
- The alleged release's URL style is different.
- The alleged release's press contacts are different.
- The trademark line on the alleged release:
"Apple, the Apple logo, Mac, Mac OS, Macintosh, iTunes and iPod are trademarks of Apple...."
versus the legit PowerBook release:
"Apple, the Apple logo, Macintosh, Mac, Mac OS, PowerBook, SuperDrive, AirPort, iLife, iTunes, iPod, iPhoto, iMovie, iDVD, GarageBand, Safari, Sherlock, QuickTime, iCal, Apple Store and FireWire are either registered trademarks or trademarks of Apple..."

Apple neglecting to note that the word "PowerBook" is trademarked in a PowerBook press release? Not bloody likely!
