01/22/2004 02:12 AM RIAA sues... (again): The RIAA has just issued a new
lawsuit against 532 more "illegal filesharers"
only this time, they're also using the "john doe" approach
meaning that they dont have to have ascertain your name by
strongarming ISPs, but by suing your IP address, they let the judicial
system take care of that little detail.

RIAA Sues Again... As Promised
01/22/2004 03:09 AMRealizing they'd lost a little momentum after the
Verizon
decision and noticing that
file
sharing is on the rise again, the RIAA still thinks that it can
win the war by making a big publicity splash and suing people. The
latest, is that they've
filed 532 new lawsuits against people
accused of offering music for download through file sharing
networks. Because of the Verizon decision, these lawsuits are all
filed against "John Doe" defendants, and they will now try to get
legal subpoenas from ISPs to find out who these people are. Once
again, this is more of a publicity campaign than a legal campaign, so
it will be interesting to see if more stories of "falsely accused"
people show up again.

RIAA Sues Deceased Grandmother
02/05/2005 09:14 PMThe recording industry's latest assault on file sharing has netted an
unusual suspect: a deceased great-grandmother from West Virginia. In a
lawsuit filed in January, the RIAA accused 83-year old Gertrude Walton
of sharing over 700 pop, rock and rap songs under the alias
"smittenedkitten." What the RIAA didn't know is that Walton had passed
away in December.

02/05/2005 09:26 PMMark Frauenfelder:
The Recording Industry Association of America is getting soft. RIAA
spokesman Jonathan Lamy announced that they will drop their lawsuit
against a woman who died last month at the age of 83 and didn't own a
computer.
A group of record companies named Walton as the sole
defendant in a federal lawsuit, claiming she made more than 700 songs
available for free on the Internet.
Walton's daughter, Robin Chianumba, lived with her mother for the
last 17 years and said her mother objected to having a computer in the
house.
"My mother wouldn't know how to turn on a computer," Chianumba
said.

Dead, Non-Computer Owner Sued By The
RIAA For Swapping 700 Songs
02/05/2005 09:49 PMThere have been plenty of stories about the entertainment industry
threate
ning completely innocent people, but now they're getting even
worse. According to
Broadband
Reports among the people sued in the latest batch of lawsuits from
the RIAA
was an 83-year-old
woman who is now deceased. Even when she was alive she never
owned a computer, let alone had the username "smittenedkitten," or
shared over 700 songs online. The RIAA responds, oh so politely, by
saying they'll now dismiss the case. However, that's not the real
issue. All of these examples show that the RIAA doesn't really know
who's doing what -- and yet they're filing tons of indiscriminate
lawsuits. Every time a screwup like this happens, they apologize and
remove the lawsuit, but shouldn't they be punished for filing
frivolous lawsuits? It's clear that they really don't have the right
tools to be able to tell who actually committed a crime. A smart
lawyer should use these cases to show that the industry has no real
evidence that any of these lawsuits are valid.

12/22/2004 01:49 AMI love books, I love browsing stacks, I love libraries, I love
Powell's in Portland, I like collecting books, I always have a stack
nearby to read, I love looking through picture books, and I love books
even though I didn't really become much of a reader until the end of
my college years (I never read for fun until then). Plunging into the
Internet fed my book addiction further, as I had to read dozens of
computer classics to get up to speed and stay ahead of the curve.
Every computer desk I've had until recently was flanked by bookshelves
loaded with titles.
Earlier this year, I remember hearing Cory
Doctorow give a talk about how ebooks were going to rule the world
and folks would abandon the printed page for the laptop screen. I
thought it was a good talk, but I felt the thesis was a bit ahead of
its time. There's really no comparison between curling up with a book
and a blanket in front of a fireplace, versus trying to read thousands
of words on a screen.
Last weekend I was doing some house cleaning and I kept finding
stacks of books. A stack next to the reading chairs.
A stack on the coffee table. A stack beside my bed. All these stacks
contained books I bought in 2004, but never read. Some, I got halfway
through, but even more I got maybe ten pages in. A few I never even
cracked open.
When I think back to the last three books I enjoyed, they were all
heard on my iPod,
while on a road trip. I can't recall the last book I finished in
my hands.
I'm going to take a holiday trip soon to a fairly remote location
where there's not much to do besides read. I'm going to sit and read
the
only book I've wanted to read this year, and I have a feeling it
might just be one of the last dead tree books I read for a long
time.
As much as I didn't agree with Cory back during his E-tech talk,
I'm finally realizing it's coming true in my own life. I read
thousands of words everyday on my monitors and I rarely take time to
read anything on the printed page, and there's no sign of reversal on
that trend. The scariest thing for the bookfan inside me is that I
don't think it's bad thing, either.
Long live the ebook. Long live the audiobook. So long, dead
trees.

Dead Like Me - Dead or Alive?
02/01/2005 09:59 PMIn television these days, there is hardly a show that doesn’t
have the blood flowing or the boobies showing. It is hard to find a

found the saving grace with Showtime’s original show, Dead Like
Me. I guess a few executives didn’t share my opinion. The fight
is far from over though. In the past shows would have died…
