Evolution of Portable Audio Photo Essay
Evolution of Portable Audio Photo Essay

I'm so glad we invented Canada. The CBC's new
Arts section has a great short feature on the history of digital
music, from the first transistor radios [pictured] to the latest in
tiny white music bricks. It's even worse than I am about the iPod,
though, so don't expect a surprise ending. Writer Matthew McKinnon
does float an interesting idea, though: if music hadn't broken free of
the 'one family, one radio' format, we might not have the endless
variety of music we have today.

Panasonic D-snap Audio Portable Players
Panasonic D-snap Audio Portable Players
03/19/2005 02:45 AM
Panasonic introduced a few portable audio players yesterday that we
forgot to mention (although they leaked way back in October), in
the "D-snap Audio" line. We'll start with the "SV-SD100V" and
"SV-SD90" square-shaped players with SD card slot (and only an SD card
slot). They also have a mirrored organic EL display, and compatibility
with MP3, WMA and AAC. In fact, the SV-SD100V throws in an FM tuner
and voice recorder.
Also announced were the "SV-MP720V" and "SV-MP730V." Their
interesting "two block" design actually won Panasonic a
design award. The two units vary only in capacity, color
variations and price. Both are MP3 and WMA compatible and have an FM
tuner/voice recorder you probably won't ever use. A sort of
disappointing 10-hour battery life on these.

Download audio to your PlayStation

Download audio to your PlayStation
Portable (PSP) with FeedDemon
03/28/2005 06:26 PM
Last week I picked up a new PlayStation Portable
(PSP) in the hopes that I could use FeedDemon to download
podcasts and other audio files to it. Turns out it's possible, but it
wasn't as straightforward as I would've liked.
In my case, I decided to use the PSP's USB connection to copy
downloaded audio directly to the PSP's memory stick. Just in case
other readers are struggling with this, here's how to do it:
- Select "USB Connection" in your PSP's settings and enable the USB
mode - this must be done in order for the PSP's
memory stick to be mapped to a Windows drive letter
- If you haven't done so already, create a folder on the mapped
drive named
PSP, then create a subfolder of that named
Music
- Open FeedDemon's FeedStation utility, then click the Options toolbutton and
switch to the Podcasting tab
- Place a checkmark in "This Folder" to copy downloaded podcasts to
a local folder, then enter the path to your PSP's music folder (in my
case, this is
I:\PSP\Music)
- Click OK to save your settings
The next step is to simply use
FeedDemon to download your favorite podcasts, then let FeedStation
take care of automatically copying them to your PSP.
Note: My PSP came with a feeble 32MB memory stick,
which is far too small for storing audio. So if you plan to use your
PSP to listen to podcasts, make sure to invest in a much larger memory
stick!

Design Pattern Snobs
Design Pattern Snobs
12/09/2002 11:20 AMHave you noticed lately how the word pattern seems to be creeping
into general musings and dialogue more and more? Like name-dropping,
it's consciously woven into the fabric of the conversation as a way to
assert a certain level of understanding and credibility. Mention the
latest design pattern and suddenly your peers will see you as a genius
of software engineering, "...you see I have employed the Decorator
pattern for this particular class..." While you're fighting the urge
to give them a good slap, allow me to let you into the big secret.

Another Portable NES: Game Axe
Another Portable NES: Game Axe
08/16/2004 12:41 PM
So
apparently that Pockefami portable NES machine we were talking about
is far from the first portable NES player. In fact, the GameAxe, from
Taiwanese grey market manufacturer Redant was created way back in '95.
Although never released in the US for obvious reasons, the GameAxe is
essentially an NES in portable form, with a 3.8-inch LCD screen and a
screaming 1.8MHz 8-bit CPU. They fetch high dollars, though, from
retro freaks; this one on eBay is probably going to go for well over
$200.
There was another portable unit that could play NES carts, as well,
called the "Top Guy." It reportedly had a general suck to it, but it
did have one cool feature: an FCC-be-damned low-power VHF transmitter
that made any TV within a few feet display the game you were playing.
(Thanks, Myron!)

Vonage Goes Portable
Vonage Goes Portable
12/18/2003 03:38 PMOm Malik breaks the news that Vonage will soon have laptop and
PDA-based software client for its service: It's not news that Vonage
has tens of thousands of subscribers, nor that they offer a
high-quality, full-featured hardware-based broadband voice-over-IP
service that allows you to map multiple incoming real phone numbers to
your virtual line. It also not news that you can get high-quality
software VoIP clients; I'm personally enamored of Xten's suite, which
work with Windows, Mac OS X, LindowsOS, and Linux. They're beautiful
and come in free and paid flavors, including a multi-line conference
version. The Xten clients can interface with any standard SIP (Session
Initiation Protocol) server, and many of the VoIP providers who offer
long-distance over the Internet use standard SIP gateways. But getting
from Xten outbound to the VoIP provider is a pain: I had to have the
CEO of Xten provide me the details for a couple of VoIP services;
those details aren't on the VoIP long-distance service sites. Then
there's the question of inbound service. Even though you can use Xten
as the default client with Addaline.com, it's unclear whether you can
receive inbound calls via their service. Most of the VoIP in software
is focused on making calls to the PSTN and receiving calls from other
folks using services like Free World Dial-up, which provides you with
a free non-PSTN VoIP number and SIP gateway. Om's scoop is certainly
that Vonage is going to package the software and PSTN offering into a
no-configuration package that will be as easy to use as their hardware
service. Vonage's hardware solution is pretty simple: open the box,
plug it in, wait a minute. You're done. Voice mail calls can be
alerted via email, and other features can be enabled through the Web
site's dashboard for your account. Because Vonage works over
broadband, a Pocket PC or a laptop equipped with their soft client in
turn connected to a Wi-Fi hotspot or access point means free phone
service everywhere -- it's another incentive to lower cell phone plans
(for roaming purposes) and increase the number of hot spot locations.
I'm a recent Vonage convert. I use my cell phone as my office and
roaming line, and although I'd switched to a $130/month plan from
Cingular because of their rollover minutes, I had $250 and $450 bills
in September and October during particularly intense work periods.
Yes, that's...
Portable and off the grid
Portable and off the grid
12/03/2003 04:55 PM Necessity Is the Mother of Invention. (NY
Times, reg. req.) Amy
Smith teaches MIT students about the politics of delivering
technology to poor nations and the nitty-gritty of mechanical
engineering and helped start the
IDEAS competition; she herself designed
(among other things) a screenless
hammer mill suited to third-world conditions and using
"materials available to a blacksmith in
Senegal."
Smith's entire life is like one of her
inventions, portable and off the grid. At 41, she has no kids, no car,
no retirement plan and no desire for a Ph.D. Her official title:
instructor. ''I'm doing exactly what I want to be doing. Why would I
spend six years to get a Ph.D. to be in the position I'm in now, but
with a title after my name? M.I.T. loves that I'm doing this work. The
support is there. So I don't worry.''...
Likewise, the inventors who most inspire her will never strike it
rich. ''There are geniuses in Africa, but they're not getting the
press,'' she says. She gushes about Mohammed Bah
Abba, a Nigerian teacher who came up with the pot-within-a-pot
system. With nothing more than a big terra-cotta bowl, a little pot,
some sand and water, Abba created a refrigerator -- the rig uses
evaporation rather than electricity to keep vegetables cool.
Innovations that target the poorest of the poor don't have to be
complicated to make a big difference. The best solution is sometimes
the most obvious.
A rare optimistic story for these
downbeat times.

iSpeaker Portable
iSpeaker Portable
03/30/2005 11:35 AMMonster's iSpeaker Portable is a small, battery powered speaker
designed to be hooked up to a portable digital music player or
notebook.
Using an iSpeaker is great way to share music or simply have a break
from using headphones. The iSpeaker works well for trips to the
beach, on-the-go business meetings, long car rides, or school
presentations. It is small and thin and is about the same size and
design as a double-CD case, but looks a lot cooler. It is light
weight and easily stored and packed around because of it's small size.
It's flat panel technology provides full stereo sound and there is no
battery drain for the speakers on the device it is hooked up to
because it runs off its own batteries. The Monster iSpeaker Portable
comes with a three foot mini-to-mini stereo cable and four AA Monster
alkaline PowerCells that will run the speakers over 8 hours. To use
the iSpeaker, the batteries must be placed in the device and then it
can be hooked up to the iPod, PowerBook, GameBoy or whatever you
choose by simply plugging it into the headphone jack.
Monster's iSpeaker sounds great and has the best sound when opened to
its full capacity. Spymac tested it out with the iPod mini and a 15"
PowerBook and both showed excellent results. The great design and
colouring of the iSpeaker compliment an iPod, PowerBook or iBook and
the small size make it perfect for taking anywhere.
Monster's iSpeaker Portable is available for $59.95.
