The Iconfactory headed into the weekend on Friday with the release of CandyBar 1.6.3. This upgrade to their popular system icon customization tool qualifies the software for Mac OS X v.10.3.3, which is the next OS X update planned by Apple, and fixes a bug that prevented the Restore Default Icons option from appearing on unqualified system versions. Version 1.6.3 also adds drag and drop support for the upcoming release of Pixadex 1.5, which allows you to store, sort, and search on all your custom system icons.

Jabra BT800 Bluetooth Headset Reviewed

bt800_rev.jpgFor the life of me, I can't figure out how to configure my phone to pair with my Bluetooth headset and still ring, which means I miss a lot of calls if I'm not paying attention. The (relatively) new Jabra BT800 headset has a built-in vibrate mode that would alleviate that problem, while giving me another: embarrassment. While the BT800 does feature an integrated LCD Caller ID read-out, it's also sort of huge, which makes my likelihood of wearing it anywhere outside of a tech convention pretty slim. If you don't mind the bulkiness, though, Mobileburn gives it high marks, with good battery life, excellent noise-cancelling features, and decent sound quality.

A glitch in Microsoft's Windows Update automated patching service caused a security fix that was released last month to be delivered to computer users on Tuesday, the same day Microsoft proclaimed December would be a patch-free month. The software patch fixes a serious vulnerability in a set of Web site management tools called FrontPage Server Extensions, which are part of Microsoft's Windows 2000, Windows XP and Office XP software, according to Microsoft Security Bulletin MS03-051 released Nov. 11. Exploiting the flaw could allow an attacker to gain control over a user's PC, Microsoft said.

Sapir/Whorf raises its head again in study of the Piraha tribe. I can't stop thinking about this article which appeared in the Globe and Mail Friday.

A study appearing today in the journal Science reports that the hunter-gatherers seem to be the only group of humans known to have no concept of numbering and counting. Not only that, but adult Piraha apparently can't learn to count or understand the concept of numbers or numerals, even when they asked anthropologists to teach them and have been given basic math lessons for months at a time ... the Piraha are the only people known to have no distinct words for colours.
They have no written language, and no collective memory going back more than two generations. They don't sleep for more than two hours at a time during the night or day. Even when food is available, they frequently starve themselves and their children, Prof. Everett reports.
They communicate almost as much by singing, whistling and humming as by normal speech.
They frequently change their names, because they believe spirits regularly take them over and intrinsically change who they are.
They have no creation myths, tell no fictional stories and have no art.

Can any of our anthropologists or linguists comment? I had thought that narrative was the common link in all human cultures....

The holiday season has passed, leaving behind the usual clutter of reflections and predictions. Four topics have been particular darlings this past season: offshoring; open source penetration; the impending Salesforce.com IPO; and business process outsourcing. As varied as these topics are, they all share a common rope: 2004 will be a pivotal year for evolving role of software development.

Lots of great conversations to have

Lots of great conversations to have 03/14/2005 05:09 PM

So here I am at SXSW - and they won't let yah ask questions til the end. But there should be some really interesting conversations today.

Topics include:

- why do the A-list bloggers have some many disciples? As soon as they sit down out in the hallway, they're swarmed by legions of disciples.

- I wonder what the difference between 'emergent semantics' and emergent democracy'? Or better put "what's the difference between the semantic web and the SEMANTIC WEB?"

- the Macromedia people are here - and their stock is up. Apparently Wall. St. thinks their Flash Mobile strategy means something. But wait till people discover my former comapny - they'll go running in the opposite direction. The folks here seem nice enough - but if you got the kind of bosses they have - well I wouldn't wish it upon strangers. They (the bosses) will find some way of fucking this up - just like they have so many times before. The oly good news is rumors of a buyout. THEN maybe they can get some decent management in there.

- blogging showdown vs DIY or someone else will vs Bram Cohen interview - hmmmmmm. So many decisions to make.

- I ran into Harry Knowles. His "Aint-it-cool-news" is based here in Austin. I also got to meet his webmaster. They're one of my heros.

- Lots of other coolio panels like Open Source Marketing, We the Media, the New New economy and Red Sox Blog.

- and a Malcolm Gladwell keynote,

We doing a panel on open source infrastructure.

Lots Of Passion, Not So Much Profit

Lots Of Passion, Not So Much Profit 03/08/2004 11:04 PM
I was having a discussion recently with someone about the challenge of selling "TiVo-like" products - by which we didn't mean other PVRs, but products where (a) the product's benefits are difficult to describe but (b) the early adopters who sign on can't imagine living without it. It's a challenge a lot of companies face, and no one seems to have a very good answer. Some people think you just focus in on one differentiating aspect of the technology and pitch it relentlessly. Others try to build up word-of-mouth buzz. Still others try to get as many "trial" users as possible. It really depends on the actual product, but venture capitalist Kevin Laws is look ing at these types of companies and wondering what it takes to jump that hurdle. Is it just a question of letting the companies grow slowly, instead of pushing for the mass acceptance right away, or is there something else to it? It seems to me, that the examples he cites of companies that have made it over that hurdle were less revolutionary than those that haven't. That is, while the iPod and the Treo 600 have done things right, both were actually smart updates on previously failed products in that space. The examples he mentions of companies that have struggled (TiVo, PayTrust) are companies that have spent more time trying to invent and define the space themselves. The real question, then, is whether or not companies that create a space can successfully hang on and remain relevant until the market actually takes off. In many cases, I wonder if those companies have trouble because they're so focused on their own product and defining the market that they miss out on the one big feature that catapults a competitor into market dominance.

It turns out that the current version of the ecto beta isn't a blogging client, its a Typepad/MovableType client.

I can't use it. :(

I really hope this changes in a future release. A near-future release.

Well some of us have accounts on all major blogging tools, though I'm sure nobody checks out my TypePad account or BlogWare for that matter or LiveJournal.&n bsp; But us professionals have to do our research.

Meanwhile I'm sure Adriaan will take care of supporting Blogware - soon enough.
