venge of the User: Lessons from Creator/User Battles at the
O'Reilly Emerging
Technology Conference in San Diego.
The response is an attempt to "configure the users" -- constrain
behavior to acceptable behavior with messaaging, kicking people
off, etc.
This won't work: you can't tell a hacker not to hack. These kids
are social hackers. You can stop some bad behavior, but you chase
off your best users, too.
Dating doesn't happen because you're in a dating context. Dating
arises out of real contexts.
Taking away fakesters didn't make Frienster more real. Friendster
is unreal because people never remove their friends, even if they
never see them (the exception is when you break up, ironic,
because ex-lovers are strong ties!).

Switching to an iBook
05/10/2004 04:09 PMBrett Burney writes in the Cleveland Plain Dealer, Youve
undoubtedly heard the interminable debate between Windows and Apple
users. And while Im not trying to take sides, I was thoroughly
delighted with the iBook and Max OS X. The vast majority of computer
users in todays world work on Windows-based machines, but I see
how an Apple can become your primary computer. [May 10]

09/18/2004 12:52 PMWhen Apple unveiled the iPod three years ago, no one (besides possibly
Steve Jobs) could have foreseen the tremendous impact it would have on
music, technology and, well, life itself. It has already secured its
place in history, will likely find its way into the Oxford English
Dictionary and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and has seen more
celebrity pockets than Justin Timberlake’s cell phone number.
What used to elicit stares of wonder is now as commonplace as a Dell
Dimension. So commonplace, in fact, that the Celebrity cruise I
recently took offered its guests an opportunity to rent an iPod.
Considering the average age of a cruise-goer, it's certainly an
interesting sell. But what's even more interesting is the implications
— the concept of music for rent has been slow to take off, but
what about iPods for rent?
Picture it: Christmas music playing, Santa posing for pictures, cash
registers ringing up eager sales … and you’re above it all, listening
to Steriogram with your rented iPod.
Or maybe your father is. Or your mother. Or your girlfriend or
boyfriend, all looking for that perfect gift in the weeks leading up
to Christmas. If they tried an iPod — one that wasn’t attached
to the Apple Store's dock — perhaps they’d consider buying one.
The formula is relatively simply: For $25, a renter could get an iPod
for four hours, get a $5 iTunes Music Store credit, and receive a
10-percent off coupon (valid for 30 days, of course).
The woman on the ship that I spoke to about the iPod rentals was
fairly new to the gig, so she didn't have much information. She did,
however, say that the six iPods available were
"proprietary," in that they only worked with the ship's
computers. Whether this is true or not, I'm quite sure Apple could
find a way. And to dissuade stealing, a credit card imprint would be
required.
Of course, if Apple is content to let other companies sell its
products <A
HREF="http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.gsp?product_id=32645
63">for them</A>, so be it.
