Photoshop As a Crime Fighting Tool

Photoshop As a Crime Fighting Tool

Photoshop As a Crime Fighting Tool 02/05/2005 09:16 PM

Cops use photo to pry open sex abuse: Some scumbag sexually abused a girl, then sent pictures around the Net. The police have had the girl Photoshopped out of the picture, and are circulating the resulting images in the hopes of catching a lead.

For the first time, Toronto police have released digitally altered photos taken from original child-abuse images in hopes of identifying a sexual-abuse victim. The eerie photos, which show a young blond victim being abused, were "repainted" to remove the victim in hopes of identifying the location where she was abused, said Det.-Sgt. Paul Gillespie, head of the child-exploitation unit.

The pictures are here. They're eerie. It looks like they extrapolated the background behind where the girl was located in the picture, leaving a subtly distorted silhouette of her.

Crime Fighting By Smart Mobbing?

Crime Fighting By Smart Mobbing? 02/18/2004 02:56 PM
There have been a few stories here and there about people preventing crime (or at least giving police clues about a crime) by using their camera phones. Well, now it appears that police in Germany have read up on Howard Rheingold's concept of "smart mobs" and are set to use the concept to help fight crime. The system, which has been tested for over a year but is now official, would let police broadcast an SMS text message to the mobile phones of anyone who volunteers about a particular crime. In other words, say a bank has just been robbed in a certain area, the police can quickly tell everyone who volunteered in that area to be on the lookout for the suspect. Some, however, are quite upset about this use of ordinary citizens as an adjunct police force - saying that it only encourages people to spy on their neighbors and report them for doing crimes. I'm not sure that's really the case. This isn't a situation where people are being asked to report on all suspicious behavior, but to alert them to be on the lookout in response to very specific crimes. Still, the much more important question is whether or not this actually helps at all. Despite the year-long tests, there were a grand total of zero crimes solved using this method.

The Local Installation Source Tool is a wizard to help manage your Local Installation Source (LIS) on computers running Microsoft Office 2003. The LIS Tool allows you to enable or disable LIS, and to move the MsoCache folder to a new volume. This download is intended for use by customers and network administrators with LIS issues who contact Microsoft Product Support Services. Local Installation Source is a Setup feature. When a user installs Microsoft Office 2003 from a CD or a compressed CD image on the network, Setup copies any required installation files to a hidden folder on the local computer. Microsoft Windows Installer uses this local installation source to install Office, and the local source remains available for repairing, reinstalling or updating Office later on. Users can install features on demand or run Setup in maintenance mode to add new features without their original media.

Roland Piquepaille writes "Computer scientists from the University of Bath have written a software which transforms your ordinary photographs and movies into cubist works of art and animation reminiscent of Picasso. They trained their software to identify important elements of a face, such as a nose, eye or mouth, until the computer learned how to recognize them on its own. This was achieved by giving the software a kind of 'aesthetic sense.' Then, by "using photographs of a subject taken from multiple points of view, the software automatically picks out important areas within the image, which are cut out as chunks. The chunks are statistically shuffled and a few of them randomly selected and distorted into a 'cubist' composition ready for digital painting." The software is not yet publicly available, but software and animation companies have expressed interest. My blog contains additional references and images."
