Buying Computers Without Windows

Buying Computers Without Windows

Buying Computers Without Windows 02/05/2005 09:16 PM

Part I: Corporate Desktop Linux - The Hard Truth: This is an excellent article from the retired CTO of World Bank. He wanted to figure out how much you would save on licensing by switching to Linux. The results ain't pretty if you want to stick with the big manufacturers.

When I went to IBM's website I couldn't find an option on their desktops to enable me to buy Linux [...]. After diligent searching I simply couldn't figure out where IBM had hidden it. So I called their toll free number for help.

This is IBM — you know, the company that has invested more in Linux than any other company? The company who says "the future is Open". That IBM. The sales rep explained that IBM does not sell desktop computers without Windows.

It was worse at Dell. He found computers without Windows, but they ended up more expensive than computers without. Via Slashdot

After being berated by Microsoft for attempting to sell Linux on some of the company's desktop systems, Dell has decided to stop selling Windows altogether. CEO Michael Dell said, in a fictional conference call with reporters, "Microsoft is in no position to push us around. By selling Linux, we will save each customer nearly $200 per computer. If Microsoft would like to continue selling Windows through Dell, it will need to ask very nicely and accept that we have the right to sell other operating systems."

Microsoft Announces Windows for Super
Computers
05/25/2004 11:46 AM
Microsoft announced Monday that it would create a new Windows version aimed at high-performance computing, an area that rival Linux has largely dominated lately. Dubbed Windows Server HPC (High Performance Computing), the new Windows version will be designed by a new High Performance Computing Team at Microsoft headed by Kyril Faenov, and may be accompanied by an HPC version of SQL Server. In a recent interview with Microsoft vice president Bob Muglia, I asked about areas in which the company was doing poorly against the competition, and only one important market came up: High performance computing. "One workload I think we've historically done poorest in is high-performance computing," Muglia told me. "But that's an area where we're making some ongoing investments too."

When a content owner creates an audio or video stream, they can add script commands (such as URL script commands and custom script commands) to be encoded in the stream. When the stream is played back, the script commands can trigger events in an embedded player program, or they can open your browser and then navigate to a Web page. This behavior is by design

After applying the Update for Windows Media Player Script Commands (KB828026), some URL script commands do not fire even though they would be expected to do so. In addition to the URL script command issues, this package addresses an issue with the installer that would cause 100% CPU utilization in certain scenarios.

NTSC-J, PAL, and SECAM TV Tuner Hotfix
for DirectX 9.0b on Windows 2000,
Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003
(KB825116)
11/04/2003 11:37 PM
DirectX 9.0b was released on 7/23/03 to address the MIDI security issue identified in bulletin MS03-030. A small number of non-security fixes were also included in the release. One of these fixes caused several TV Tuner capture card/driver combinations using video formats other than NTSC (NTSC-J, PAL, SECAM) to no longer initialize correctly on Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003. Symptoms include loss of capture functionality and potential inability to set/retain device capture settings. This hotfix, documented further in Knowledge Base article 825116, has been issued to correct the flaw. 11-04-03 update: The English hotfix package has been modified to allow patching of all language installations supported by the affected Operating Systems.

T-Online Buying AOL?

T-Online Buying AOL? 11/13/2003 01:36 PM
The Register is reporting that T-Online, the ISP part of Deutsche Telekom, is talking to Time Warner about buying AOL, though they also get a T-Online person to deny the rumor. Time Warner has repeatedly said that they have no plans to sell AOL, but there certainly are executives there who would love to see it go. Of course, a more likely discussion would be more informal discussions to see if T-Online would want to buy AOL's German (or European) operations, and not the whole thing. However, the article doesn't suggest that at all, and seems to indicate they're looking at the whole thing.
