Emergent church
08/05/2004 02:32 PM AKMA successfully complicates the notion of the "emergent Church."
Snippet: Any singular model of liturgical normativity came into
prominence by way of a long path of emergence — so picking on emergent
church for its buffet liturgical practice occludes the cafeteria past
that lies behind the watershed liturgical models. Fascinating. One of
the things I like about Judaism (speaking as a non-observant Jew) is
the way an original text grounds it, interpretation frees it to
respond to modern and cultural differences, and a tradition of
discourse guides how interpretation addresses the original text....

Yesterday, Jeff Jarvis
introduced us to the Iranian blogger, Pedram Moallemian. Pedram blogs
at Iranian.net. He is one of the
outspoken Iranians who blogs in English and help us understand what's
going on on the incredible number of Persian blogs. He explain that
the Persian blogs can be traced to the short explanation written by
Hoder at Hoder.com explaining how
to use Blogger in Persian. There
are now over 100,000 Persian blogs. Most of the blogs are about
politics and sex as well as other things like poetry. The suppression
of free speech in Iran is one of the explanations for the number of
Persian blogs, but the notion that one short page of Persian
documentation for Blogger starting this incredible trend is also very
important. Many countries and languages probably just need a small
seed to create an emergent cascade of blogging adoption.
Jeff
writes about an arrested Iranian blogger who was recently freed.
Great post with links to other interesting posts about Iranian
blogging.

Ian Haig is an Australian
geek pervert artist who makes wacky,
futuristic sex toys from used tech stuff: discarded vacuum cleaners,
food processors, and the like. Many of the passers-by who wandered
into his booth at the recent
Erotica LA expo assumed the
devices were intended to be used. A scary prospect, given their
appearance, but some people will get off to just about anything.
Thankfully, Haig makes the devices for observation only. Think of it
as socio-sexual nerdist commentary, with tongue planted firmly in
cheek. And just be grateful nobody's trying to stick one of these up
your nether-regions.
I shot a couple of photographs of Mr. Haig and his "Futurotica" tools
at Erotica LA: one,

Ban Behavior, Not Code?
Ban Behavior, Not Code?
05/10/2004 02:32 PMDeclan McCullough has a roundup of
plent
y of dreadful legislation that has been proposed to ban certain
applications, pointing out how many would ban perfectly legitimate
applications as well. His recommendation is that instead of banning
applications, politicians should focus on banning behaviors. As has
been said many times here, banning technology makes no sense. Banning
bad behavior is perfectly reasonable. However, it's not necessarily
so easy with software. If you asked the politicians and looked at
some of the bills McCullough mentions, many would say that they
are trying to ban behavior and not the technology. For
example, with spyware, they're trying to ban the behavior or sneakily
sending private info without the user knowing it. That's what the
various laws propose - and it's clearly targeting a behavior. The end
result, though, is that it bans any technology that automatically
performs that "behavior." So, separating out software from behavior
isn't always so easy.

Suddenly, Google Mania has turned into Google Depression.
In the past few weeks, healthy skepticism about the upcoming Google
public stock offering has morphed into fear and loathing.
This is not exactly a surprise, given the rare hypefest that prevailed
through the first half of 2004. The prospective initial public
offering of an excellent company with amazing profit margins and a
valuable brand captured imaginations and looked likely to also capture
big money in the public markets.

Mac OS X Window Behavior
Mac OS X Window Behavior
03/14/2005 06:09 PMJeff Carlson (~990 words)
When Apple thrust Mac OS X upon us, it was
quite a change. I remember one colleague remarked that his head was
filled with all sorts of Mac OS 9 troubleshooting arcana, nearly all
of which would be rendered moot once Mac OS X gained its footing. Some
behaviors in the new operating system changed enough that they
disrupted the flow of how we'd been using the Mac for years.
Subsequently, several utilities appeared to bring back those behaviors
(see "Top Mac OS X Utilities: Restoring Mac OS 9
Functionality" in TidBITS-622

Consciousness and Adaptive Behavior
Consciousness and Adaptive Behavior
03/14/2005 06:03 PMA new paper by
Richard Sieb attempts to explain how subjectivity could arise and how
a
subjective system might be more adaptable by utilizing changing points
of view to respond to change. In the paper, he proposes that voluntary
intentional actions arise from an animal's (or machine's) unique point
of view - and if the physical mechanism responsible for the production
of the action can be found, it may also explain the point of view
(which
he identifies with consciousness).

Environment, scripting, and behavior
Environment, scripting, and behavior
03/21/2003 10:17 AM
Jython, as we've seen, succeeds by the extraordinary measure of
rewriting the Python interpreter in Java. In the .Net world, early
efforts to make Perl and Python into first-class .Net languages ran
aground. Both projects have now retreated to a dual-run-time strategy.
Scripts can produce and consume .Net interfaces but rely on their own
virtual machines, not the CLR.
Is there a better solution for these environments? The designers of
Parrot [6], the Perl 6 virtual machine, think not and have struck out
on their own. "Why not compile to JVM/.Net?" the Parrot FAQ asks
itself. And it answers: "Those VMs are designed for statically typed
languages." That's true, sadly. It's a question of priorities, and
support for dynamic languages isn't high on the list for Java or .Net.
If I could make one change to both of these environments, that would
be it. [Full story at Inf
oWorld.com]
Mark Dulcey wrote to point out that the Parrot VM is not intended to
support Perl only, but any dynamic language. Yes, I should have made
that clearer. It would be best, in my view, if the JVM and CLR could
serve this purpose. My gut tells me the obstacles are cultural, not
technical.
