Dead pixels instead of dead trees

Dead pixels instead of dead trees 12/22/2004 01:49 AM

I love books, I love browsing stacks, I love libraries, I love Powell's in Portland, I like collecting books, I always have a stack nearby to read, I love looking through picture books, and I love books even though I didn't really become much of a reader until the end of my college years (I never read for fun until then). Plunging into the Internet fed my book addiction further, as I had to read dozens of computer classics to get up to speed and stay ahead of the curve. Every computer desk I've had until recently was flanked by bookshelves loaded with titles.

Earlier this year, I remember hearing Cory Doctorow give a talk about how ebooks were going to rule the world and folks would abandon the printed page for the laptop screen. I thought it was a good talk, but I felt the thesis was a bit ahead of its time. There's really no comparison between curling up with a book and a blanket in front of a fireplace, versus trying to read thousands of words on a screen.

Last weekend I was doing some house cleaning and I kept finding stacks of books. A stack next to the reading chairs. A stack on the coffee table. A stack beside my bed. All these stacks contained books I bought in 2004, but never read. Some, I got halfway through, but even more I got maybe ten pages in. A few I never even cracked open.

When I think back to the last three books I enjoyed, they were all heard on my iPod, while on a road trip. I can't recall the last book I finished in my hands.

I'm going to take a holiday trip soon to a fairly remote location where there's not much to do besides read. I'm going to sit and read the only book I've wanted to read this year, and I have a feeling it might just be one of the last dead tree books I read for a long time.

As much as I didn't agree with Cory back during his E-tech talk, I'm finally realizing it's coming true in my own life. I read thousands of words everyday on my monitors and I rarely take time to read anything on the printed page, and there's no sign of reversal on that trend. The scariest thing for the bookfan inside me is that I don't think it's bad thing, either.

Long live the ebook. Long live the audiobook. So long, dead trees.

Hecklers at a Funeral

Hecklers at a Funeral 01/22/2004 02:54 AM
I had thought it better not to respond to the slimings by "Mr. K" and "John Perry Blowhard" in their comments (#11 and #12) to my last post "Coda" (as well as callous outbursts from several others over the last few days). But as they continue to burden my already well-laden heart, I will. To give my detractors the benefit of the doubt, I assume their remarks arise from a set of values that I don't share and, likely, an perception of the circumstances that may be inaccurate. Spalding was one of my closest friends. He was hardly just a name for me to drop. Even if he were as fameless as my hecklers, I would still be writing about his death in the service of my own grieving process. It is not my fault that he was known by strangers too. To the extent that his celebrity was any motivating factor in these posts, it is only because I felt the press accounts failed to deliver him in human form for those to whom he was a mere icon and failed as well to convey the agony that drove him to this. Among the beliefs that he and I shared was a conviction that making public the intimately personal is a revolutionary act in an atomized society where many feel compelled to play so close to the chest that they can't read their own cards. Being emotionally naked before strangers extends to them a permission for self-revelation they badly need if they are to loosen the shackles of their own quiet desperations. It is a blow against the pursuit of loneliness. Had I been the one who leapt and were Spalding still as he was before his breakdown, he would be incorporating my disappearance into a monologue at this very moment. But death has become wild and obscene in this country. Its power threatens our national religion of control. To die in America is to fail. It is an act of weakness. The dead could have beaten it had they been tough enough. And suicide, of course, is even worse, whatever the unendurable torments or neurological malfunctions that might drive one to it. Believe me, he tried some truly medieval procedures to penetrate his horror. Merely to speak of death in plain terms is considered by many to be disrespectful and offensive. This is a peculiarly American sickness which is, among other things, wrecking our health care system - over 70% of America's total medical expenditures are devoted to extending the last few miserable weeks of life. Our pathology about death abstracts us from it and renders us far too capable of inflicting it on others without remorse. And, worst, it allows us to dwell in a kind of numbness to life that we would not permit ourselves if we did not make ourselves numb to death. To be in denial about death is to be in denial about life. As to the supposedly dire possibility that his closest friends and family might read what I've written here, I assure you they have. I was like a member of his family. He helped raise one of my daughters. I am in constant contact with his widow. I spent last evening with his oldest and dearest friend, who thanked me for these words. I think it odd that someone can write of my disrespect while showing me so little. And I find it marvelously ironic that I am accused of name-dropping by someone who is unwilling to drop even his own. (On that last point, I beg those of you who post to this blog to please do so without hiding behind false identities. I want to build a kind of community here. Community without personal responsibility ceases to exist. And responsibility requires identity and the courage to own one's opinions.) Finally, to those of you who think I have been hasty in pronouncing Spalding's death, I assure you I am not. He had been riding the Staten Island Ferry for months in preparation for an act the intention of which he repeatedly declared to everyone who loved him. The afternoon of his departure, he took his kids to see "Big Fish," a film about a story teller who seeks to die by drowning. No one who knew him well thinks he is still alive. But, to compound our tragedy, we are denied even the opportunity to celebrate him and digest our sorrows with a proper funeral. He is still officially "missing" and may remain so forever. These postings have been my little funeral for him. I regret that some of you who attended were unable to behave as one usually does under such circumstances....

Pope's funeral will be online

Pope's funeral will be online 04/07/2005 05:48 PM
As crowds flock to the Vatican to pay their respects to Pope John Paul II in person, millions around the world are tuning in via the Internet. The Pope will largely be remembered for his influence on social issues ranging from euthanasia to AIDS, but he also earned a place in history for being the first pontiff of the computer era. It seems fitting that Friday's funeral ceremonies in St. Peter’s Basilica, which are expected to draw some 2 billion viewers, will also be available through online venues. The Vatican launched its multi-lingual website at www.vatican.va in December 1995. On World Communication Day in 2002, the Pope wrote: "We should enter this increasingly sophisticated communications network with realism and confidence. If it is used competently and responsibly, it could offer an opportunity for spreading the evangelical word." He said: "For the Church the new world of cyberspace is a summons to the great adventure of using its potential to proclaim the gospel message." Today, the website is streaming a live transmission of visitors paying their last respects to the pope. Earlier today, the Pope's last will and testament was posted. As of midday yesterday, more than 630,000 people posted messages on Poland's biggest Internet portal, www.onet.pl, with new messages being added at the rate of about 20 a minute. Poland is the Pope’s home country. Dozens of people have posted photographs of themselves posing with the pope on the website. Mobile phone text messaging also came into its own under John Paul II, whose "Thought of the Day" series -- actually brief selections from his speeches and homilies -- was launched two years ago. The spiritual messages will continue to be sent until his successor is elected in a cardinals' conclave, which is set to begin April 18.
