Virtual Office
07/09/2004 11:56 AM
Collaboration software vendor Groove Networks Inc. next week plans to announce an updated version of its flagship software, which it said will offer better security, improved performance and new ease-of-use features.Previously known as Groove Workspace 2.5, Groove Virtual Office 3.0 has faster launch times and allows multiple Groove project workspaces to be opened without a noticeable performance hit, according to Andrew Mahon, director of strategic marketing at the Beverly, Mass.-based company. The product also includes a new on-screen launch bar, where contacts with other collaborators can be managed from a single place, as well as synchronization capabilities that allow users to automatically share folders on their Windows machines with other users. In addition to Groove's existing forms-editor tools, the 3.0 release includes 10 forms templates designed to allow users to more quickly use standard forms for their collaboration projects. On the server side, the newest version of the software includes third-party private-key infrastructure security, as well as built-in auditing capabilities and backup functions.Richard Prather, CIO and vice president of technology for CARE, said the worldwide humanitarian relief agency began using Groove last year for about 70 relief workers in Central America and about 40 IT staffers. He's pleased with how it allows remote workers to do their jobs even if an online connection isn't immediately available. Users can take advantage of Groove's off-line work capabilities and then sync up automatically with other group members when they're able to go online, he said. That is a big benefit in remote locations where online connections and even electricity can be frequently cut off, Prather said. The application is also easy to use and intuitive -- even for users without a lot of computer experience, he said. The Groove software is part of a five-nation pilot project called "Information Anywhere" that Atlanta-based CARE is conducting over six months "to determine how to operate in a very decentralized environment with no or poor connectivity," he said.Another user, Glen Johnson, director of the U.S. State Department Iraq Transition Management staff in Washington, said Groove was chosen for a pilot project by his agency primarily because it offers better security. "No (competing products) other than Groove secured the data in transit and on the desktop," Johnson said.Ethan Schoonover, e-business director in Asia for London-based advertising agency Lowe & Partners Worldwide, said some 300 workers at his company have been using Groove for preparing ad pitches, managing accounts and performing strategic research.Version 2.5 of the software works as advertised, and many of the new features in Version 3 are a "great example of a company really listening to user feedback and implementing requested features," Schoonover said.Ease of use is a big plus, he said. "Even our technophobe users could get the hang of it and get comfortable with it," Schoonover said. "Groove 3.0 has cleaned up and streamlined the (user interface), and overall performance is radically improved. Launch of Groove, launch of workspaces, messaging is all significantly faster. This alone addresses a key issue with 2.5, that it was sometimes sluggish. The 3.0 memory footprint seems to be smaller in our initial review, which reduces its impact on older systems."With user data stored on the user's machine and automatically synced when online, "this is the killer app for us," Schoonover said.David Marshak, an analyst at The Patricia Seybold Group Inc. in Boston, said Groove's key strength is that it combines real-time online collaboration capabilities with off-line workspaces. "The integration ... is much better than anyone else has even attempted," he said.Peter O'Kelly, an analyst at Burton Group in Boston, said Groove's natural competitors include Lotus Notes/Domino, which was invented by Groove's founder, Ray Ozzie, and other products such as Microsoft Corp.'s SharePoint and Macromedia Inc.'s Breeze. But none match Groove's exact feature set of security, collaboration and online/off-line work capabilities."It really is at a sweet spot with a combination of features that no one else has completely," O'Kelly said.Pricing starts at $179 per user for Virtual Office Professional Edition, with hosted relay and management services starting at $40 per user a year. Customers can also choose to host their own Groove servers, starting at $9,995 per server per year.

Joey Maniac Virtual Office Desk 06/10/2004 07:55 AM

joeymanicdesk.jpg imageAs much as plea for help finding one as a post describing it, Funfurde writes about their little version of SoHo heaven: the Joey Maniac Virtual Office desk. It's a sad story, too, as the peculiar little loopy contraption was a victim of its own success after the desk proved so popular Joey Maniac had to outsource the construction, which ended up being too expensive for such a complex design. If you have one that you'd like to get rid of, it sounds like you have a rabid buyer to extort in Funfurde.

If Apple Computer, Inc. plans to enter the office suite market with its own set of integrated business applications and rumored 'Document' word processor, they are going to have to wait until the latter half of 2004 to do so. The first half of the year will belong to Redmond-based friend and foe, Microsoft, which will officially renew its commitment to the Macintosh platform on January 6th with the introduction of new versions of Microsoft Office and Virtual PC for the Macintosh.

The Utility of Consultants

The Utility of Consultants 06/18/2004 09:35 AM

A friend of mine sent me this joke today. Pretty funny.

A cowboy was herding his herd in a remote pasture when suddenly a brand-new BMW advanced out of a dust cloud towards him. The driver, a young man in a Brioni suit, Gucci shoes, Ray Ban sunglasses and YSL tie, leans out the window and asks the cowboy, "If I tell you exactly how many cows and calves you have in your herd, will you give me a calf?"

The cowboy looks at the man, obviously a yuppie, then looks at his peacefully grazing herd and calmly answers, "Sure. Why not?"

The yuppie parks his car, whips out his Dell notebook computer, connects it to his AT&T cell phone, surfs to a NASA page on the Internet, where he calls up a GPS satellite navigation system to get an exact fix on his location which he then feeds to another NASA satellite that scans the area in an ultra-high-resolution photo.

The young man then opens the digital photo in Adobe Photoshop and exports it to an image processing facility in Hamburg, Germany. Within seconds, he receives an email on his Palm Pilot that the image has been processed and the data stored.

He then accesses a Micrsoft SQL Server database through an ODBC-connected Excel spreadsheet with hundreds of complex formulas. He uploads all of this data via an email on his Blackberry and, after a few minutes, receives a response.

Finally, he prints out a full-color, 150-page report on his hi-tech, miniaturized HP LaserJet printer and finally turns to the cowboy and says, "You have exactly 1586 cows and calves."

"That's right. Well, I guess you can take one of my calves," says the cowboy.

He watches the young man select one of the animals and looks on amused as the young man stuffs it into the trunk of his car.

Then the cowboy says to the young man, "Hey, if I can tell you exactly what your business is, will you give me back my calf?"

The young man thinks about it for a second and then says, "Okay, why not?"

"You're an IT consultant," says the cowboy.

"Wow! That's correct," says the yuppie, "but how did you guess that?"

"No guessing required." answered the cowboy "You showed up here even though nobody called you, you want to get paid for an answer I already knew, to a question I never asked, and you don't know anything about my business."

"Now give me back my dog."

Open Source Consultants

Open Source Consultants 03/13/2003 10:16 AM
Most large open source projects have a "core team". Members of the core team often have consulting businesses. These folks known a lot about the project (they wrote it), and they tend to be productive programmers. If you need help, hire them. This is one of the best support options money can buy.

You pay peanuts, you get postgresql
consultants?
01/07/2003 02:46 PM
Linux Productivity Magazine featured PostgreSQL in their January 2003 issue. It's a very nice introduction to PostgreSQL that i wished i had read when i first tried the database out. Most of the article is great (from a geekish point of view), except for the following:

TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) is all the rage these days, so consider the following PostgreSQL assets:

  • Zero purchase cost
  • Zero barrier to entry
  • Zero license compliance tracking cost
  • Legal to copy throughout the enterprise
  • Voluminous documentation online at no cost
  • Several books on Postgres are available
  • Community support via Postgres mailing lists
  • Zero license cost for evaluation -- you can easily back out of Postgres
  • Postgres knowledgeable contractors can be cheaper than Oracle or DB2 gurus
-- Steve Litt

The last point is most interesting. Open source software is free, but skills are not. From a professional viewpoint, it makes little sense for a really smart contractor to learn PostgreSQL if DB2 or Oracle skills pay better and are in demand. PostgreSQL advocates should avoid such statements, which to me is equivalent to saying You pay peanuts, you get postgresql consultants...

The Virtual Mobile Virtual Network
Operator From 7-Eleven

The Virtual Mobile Virtual Network
Operator From 7-Eleven
04/27/2004 05:27 PM
Mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs) are nothing new. Virgin, both in the UK and the US, has been quite successful creating their own mobile phone carrier, despite not having a network of their own, but simply handling the branding and management, while leaving all the technology issues to a network operator partner. So far, most MVNOs seem to be targeting the youth market (often with "pre-paid plans"), and considering just how lucrative that market seems these days, it's no surprise that plenty of others want into the market. However, operating the whole MVNO is probably a lot of work, so now we're getting to the point where you have virtual MVNOs (VMVNOs) who will do all the work for a company, and simply slap their brand on the final product. That seems to be what's happening with convenience store 7-Eleven, who has announced plans to sell pre-paid mobile phones and service under the "Speak Out" brand - though, all the work appears to be done by Ztar Mobile. Other retailers are quickly expected to follow. Wal-Mart is at the top of the list, with Costco and Home Depot also apparently considering their own mobile phone offerings. The idea is to target younger users, or those with bad credit histories, who can simply pick up a phone at the store, and use it until their minutes run out, at which point they can top it up again - back at the store, of course.

Much of this study is really obvious: For example, it states that customers will either pay a monthly subscription or on a per-session basis. Ya think? But, one interesting stat here is that just 17 percent of hot spots are in hotels, airports, train stations and conventions. These are the places, the study concludes, that business people will want Wi-Fi access. I suspect that number is a bit skewed because while maybe not so many conference centers have permanent Wi-Fi networks, often conference sponsors deploy a network for the duration of the show. Those instances wouldn't be included in the 17 percent figure. Also, the study concludes that coffee shops are not conducive to business traveler usage. Really? I think they are. There's always a coffee shop and usually an empty seat nearby so seems to me a perfect place to park it and get some work done while on the road....

This note was forwarded through SixApart and should be hitting the Developer Network mailing list or Forums shortly

I am in need of a MT consultant / developer. I have a MT site www.geeknewscentral.com, it is firing on most cylinders but it has a custom CSS that has made it difficult for me to enable dynamic html and make other changes. The designer of the skin has been too busy with her own projects to be able to support us.

I have a small/medium sized budget and I am willing to pay someone to come in look at the layout, and tell me what can be done better or what needs to be brought up to speed. I would like a permanent relationship with someone that I can hire to pay for their time $$$.$$ to keeps an eye on new plugins etc and that I can rely on.

I would do it myself but have too many irons in the fire. If you would be interested in working with us, please send me a e-mail introducing yourself and some links to some of the MT work that you are currently or have done in the past. Included should be your rate scale and any minimums, keep in mind I am looking for a long term relationship in which the consultant/developer becomes a integral part of our team.

The individual must be willing to sign a NDA.

Task that I am wanting completed:

A top to bottom overview of the layout of the site and clean up of any CSS and MT Tags.
Implement several specific changes to the site layout (NDA)
Get dynamic pages working!
Suggestions of plugins that could enhance the site!
Develop a Podcast only blog in line with out current design
Develop 2-3 new skins for new domains (NDA)

If you fit that description and will stick with us for the long haul drop me a e-mail.
