Tsunami tales

Tsunami tales 12/28/2004 05:19 PM
Behind the doleful ticker tape of news stories about rising death counts in Southern Asia, the Web is humming with firsthand accounts of the tsunami's wave of destruction. One of the most compelling is a string of ongoing dispatches from BBC reporters in affected areas. On Tuesday, for instance, Roland Buerk in Sri Lanka notes that tourists who were killed are being placed in mass graves alongside native inhabitants who have also perished. "Apparently the people who are burying them are trying to make a note of where the graves are," he reports, "and if they find a passport they are taking a note of that too, in the hope that perhaps one day those remains might be returned to their home countries." Buerk's personal account of when the tsunami first struck him in a Sri Lanka beach house is also striking. "We swam out of the room neck deep in water, forcing our way through the tables and chairs in the restaurant and up into a tree."

Surfing a Tsunami

Surfing a Tsunami 12/27/2004 03:36 PM
Mark Frauenfelder: Rogier sez: "Most people would do anything to get out of the way of a tsunami. But daredevils with a death wish would like to RIDE one, and they're keeping their surf boards ready. Officials in Hawaii are still a bit freaked out by the memory of 400-plus surf enthusiasts showing up on the beaches of Oahu ten years ago, trying to catch a killer wave. To prevent a repeat, a public-safety DVD has been distributed through Hawaiian surf shops this fall.

"The message is sure to get lost on this guy, who was caught on film riding a monster wave that would give mere mortals heart attacks (though from the looks of it, it isn't nearly on the magnitude of the walls of waters that wiped out tens of thousands of people in South East Asia yesterday). Link

"In Thailand thieves disguised as police and rescuers looted suitcases and hotel safes around the resort of Khao Lak, where up to 3,000 died."
"One of the most disturbing allegations is that criminal gangs are befriending children orphaned by the tsunami, and selling them to sex traffickers."
""I don't think you could have a more vulnerable child on Earth than a child in this situation," Mr Budd told the BBC News website."

Tsunami heroes 12/31/2004 04:43 PM
Surfacing from the deluge of news reports about the devastation of coastal Thailand fishing towns, political sniping at the amount of aid pledged by the United States, and frustrated Western seismologists staring at flashing instruments without the phone numbers of anybody in Sumatra, one realizes that only certain details of the tragedy seem to linger -- all of them being small, individual acts of heroism.

Cryptozoology and the Tsunami?

Cryptozoology and the Tsunami? 12/30/2004 02:46 PM
David Pescovitz: Leading cryptozoologist Loren Coleman tells BB:
"Everyone wants to talk about the tsunamis, and so yesterday a reporter contacted me to ask about what impact all this would have on cryptozoology. Questions about cryptozoology in the midst of a global disaster? I frankly was shocked. But then I saw this as an opportunity to emphasize humanitarian efforts, first and foremost, and stressed zoological awareness would be an objective far down the priority list."

Wikipedia and the Tsunami Disaster

Wikipedia and the Tsunami Disaster 12/28/2004 03:06 PM

2004 Indian Ocean earthquake: If you haven't looked yet, Wikipedia is — once again — doing an insane job keeping track of developments in the Southeast Asia tsunami disaster.

Currently on the page is scads of information about what caused the tsunami, what a tsunami is, what the currect effects are, what every country is going to help, and what phone numbers and URLs you need if you want to assist. It's an amazing level of detail and it should be your first stop for information, rather than any of the news outlets.

We've previously raved about Wikipedia's abilities in this respect with Hurricane Ivan, the Madrid Bombings, and the 2004 Olympics.
