08/15/2004 11:51 AMWhile Steve Jobs is busy recovering from his cancer surgery in a
hospital somewhere in California, Cupertino has been doing some
recuperating of its own, largely through a flurry of software updates.
This week alone, Mac OS X 10.3.5, Security Update 2004-08-09, iSync
1.5, iPod Updater 2004-08-06, Java Update 1.4.2 Update 1, DVD Studio
Pro 3.0.1 and Safari 1.0.3 was released, just to name a few.
With the new iMac release imminent, it seems most likely that Apple is
simply doing some spring cleaning to make way for its newest family
member. But what if the shelves are being cleared for something even
bigger?
Of course, all eyes will be on the Apple on Aug. 31, and rightfully so
— a new G5 iMac has been confirmed by Apple itself, and now, we
are all merely playing the waiting game. There’s no speculation, save
to wonder just how cool it will actually be.
But we all know how much Steve Jobs likes surprises.
On Friday, The Register <A
HREF="http://www.theregister.co.uk/2004/08/13/apple_tablet_mac/&q
uot;>reported</A> on a recent European design trademark
filing, "which may provide a tantalizing glimpse of the
company"s long-awaited tablet computer.
"The filing, made in May this year but only published this week,
covers a "handheld computer" and contains sketches of what
look like an iBook screen minus the body of the computer."
Another recent filing, this time from the U.S. Patent & Trademark
Office, <A
HREF="http://appft1.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-Parser?Sect1=PTO2&Sect2
=HITOFF&u=%2Fnetahtml%2FPTO%2Fsearch-adv.html&r=1&p=1&f=G&l=50&d=PG01&
S1=apple.AS.&OS=an/(apple)&RS=AN/apple">describes</A> a
"computing device includes a housing having an illuminable
portion. The computing device also includes a light device disposed
inside the housing. The light device is configured to illuminate the
illuminable portion."
Things are certainly happening at Cupertino, and while the Apple Expo
will certainly bring big news for the Mac community, it may hold even
greater surprises — assuming Steve is well enough to deliver the
keynote presentation.
And if not, there"s always Macworld San Francisco speculation…

Good hypnotic subjects' brains are
different
09/10/2004 02:53 PM
Cory Doctorow:
I've been practicing self-hypnosis since I was a kid, and as an adult,
hypnosis helped me overcome a five-year bout of writers' block, get
rid of lifelong chronic back-pain, and painlessly kick an 18-year-old
smoking habit. For all that, I know precious little of how hypnosis
works -- it just works (for me, at least).
Now the New Scientist reports that functional MRI scans of the brains
of regular practitioners of hypnosis reveals physiological differences
from those who are not susceptible to hypnosis.
But under hypnosis, Gruzelier found that the highly susceptible
subjects showed significantly more brain activity in the anterior
cingulate gyrus than the weakly susceptible subjects. This area of the
brain has been shown to respond to errors and evaluate emotional
outcomes.
The highly susceptible group also showed much greater brain activity
on the left side of the prefrontal cortex than the weakly susceptible
group. This is an area involved with higher level cognitive processing
and behaviour.

Some notes on the Go Daddy Sponsorship!
06/06/2005 12:01 AMEveryone that watched the Superbowl commercials this year knows
about Go Daddy, their was even something controversial when their
second spot got pulled. It was nice to see a company be good natured
and take a little political jab at Janet incident, from the year
before. I liked Bob Parsons strategy, and that ad was largely
responsible for my choosing Go Daddy as my new hosting provider. See
advertising does pay off.
After the Superbowl Go Daddy had a huge increase in business, so
much so that I think they were caught a little of guard. This is my
personal speculation only, and we were caught up in that growth. When
we switched the site to the new box, we had a couple of major issues
early on, that were resolved to my complete satisfaction. One thing I
must say about this company is this, they went the extra mile to make
sure that the issue was resolved, I even had a conference call with a
couple of their techs and the CTO to discuss the problem.
What amazed me the most even when I called them, and was mad they
did react positively to my concerns in a way that made me think they
really care about their customers. They even initiated some changes to
my and I am sure some others suggestions that have resulted in some
spectacular customer service.
So many times today companies give you the hand, and would rather
loose you as a customer. But this company listened to my concerns and
reacted like no company I have seen in a long time.
The server I have been on since signing up with Go Daddy is a
Virtual Dedicated Server, and I think I have their middle hosting
package with a couple of upgrades. I pay for that server now and will
continue to out of my companies bank account, it is running in a rack
along with the thousands of others, no special configuration or
privileges. I get what every one else gets.
So don't get me wrong, if I have an issue, you all are going to be
the first to know about it, as the site is hosted at Go Daddy. I am
pretty happy to say though, that I have not restarted the server in
over 15 days and the last time I did, was because I felt like it not
that it needed it.
As a side note, when I put the Geek News Central Podcasts MP3 file
on the net I do so at a third party hosting service. Their is a reason
for that, in the first several hours that file is online, nearly 5000
of you download it. The box I am on at Go Daddy is not designed to
handle that kind of load. But it does handle the 10 or so domains I
have running on it at the moment. The box moved about 400 gigs of
traffic last month and our website is pretty high volume.
I am very happy to have Go Daddy as a sponsor and look forward to
bringing you some great deals. Tune into the Podcast tomorrow because
if your looking to save some money on domain registrations I am going
to have some promo codes to pass out.
One thing you don't have to worry about, I will my same old
objective self. Todd..

Software patents are bad for coders like
literary patents would be for writers
Software patents are bad for coders like
literary patents would be for writers
06/22/2005 01:49 AMCory Doctorow:
Richard Stallman, creator of the Free Software movement, has written a
tremendous essay for the Guardian on the risks of software patents.
Richard undertakes a gedankenexperiment about "literary patents" and
the impact they would have had on Victor Hugo as he sat down to pen
Les Miserables.
Now consider this hypothetical literary patent:
Claim 1: a communication process that represents, in the mind of a
reader, the concept of a character who has been in jail for a long
time and subsequently changes his name...
These patents would all cover the story of one character in a novel.
They overlap, but they do not precisely duplicate each other, so they
could all be valid simultaneously - all the patent holders could have
sued Victor Hugo. Any one of them could have prohibited publication of
Les Misérables.
You might think these ideas are so simple that no patent office would
have issued them. We programmers are often amazed by the simplicity of
the ideas that real software patents cover - for instance, the
European Patent Office has issued a patent on the progress bar, and
one on accepting payment via credit cards. These would be laughable if
they were not so dangerous.
