Lack Of Choppyness Is Mobile Videos Selling Point?

Lack Of Choppyness Is Mobile Videos
Selling Point?
02/01/2005 09:43 PM

While it was announced weeks ago, Verizon Wireless has finally launched their VCAST 3G streaming video content. It's still not at all clear that there's any real demand for streaming mobile broadcast style video. While it's probably a "nice to have," it's hardly a strong motivator. People still buy mobile phones to communicate -- not to consumer broadcast style video. Especially when they're on the go. While it does have a nice novelty factor, that's not the same as a sustainable business. On top of this, it looks like Verizon Wireless is already selling this based on the fact that, you know, it doesn't actually suck, rather than what it's useful for. As pointed out by Broadband Reports, the first thing a Verizon Wireless product manager said when asked about the offering is: "it's not choppy." Well, there's a strong selling point.

Anecdotally, Hotels Use Free Access as a

Anecdotally, Hotels Use Free Access as a
Selling Point
03/06/2004 01:49 AM
On a drive this last week from Los Angeles to Seattle, I noticed more hotels advertising free high-speed Internet access than ever before: I drove with my brother-in-law and a border collie from Los Angeles to Seattle over 2 1/2 days, starting on "the 5" (which turns into "I-5" north of the great central valley), cutting over to 101 along the northern coast, and then cutting back to I-5 at Grants Pass, Oregon. I saw several hundred billboards and the front doors of many hotels and motels as we drove along. Unlike previous long trips I've taken in the last couple of years, Internet is now a major bullet point for travelers. Most of the signs that advertised Internet service noted that it was high-speed and free, as well. Taken in the context of the travelers who pass along the routes we took, I can see that those services are a big necessity. In our case, our one night in a hotel in Ukiah didn't lead us to broadband since we were traveling with a dog. We looked into one chain, but they only had smoking rooms. We stayed at an inexpensive Super 8 that had free local and toll-free calls. My ISP had a Ukiah number, astoundingly, and thus I paid nothing for access in any case....

Creative Commons -licensed mobile videos

Creative Commons -licensed mobile videos 06/06/2005 12:11 AM
Digitoday reports (in Finnish) that Elisa [a Finnish operator] has started to distribute Creative Commons -licensed material on a mobile TV channel for test users.

Of course, being CC -licensed, Elisa does not have to pay any license fees to Kopiosto (the Finnish copyright organization) or anyone else, which probably is the real reason behind this move. There is already quite a lot of decent quality CC-material out there that's not getting the publicity it deserves, so this kind of a move is likely to bolster goodwill on Elisa, and more public recognition to Creative Commons.

(Though, my guess is that someone is going to inhale a stack of peas on this one and start screaming that corporations supporting free content means that artists will starve to death [starvation in general is a very big problem in Finland] and demand banning of anything that's freely available, and that corporations should "observe their responsibilities towards Finnish artists" and support them instead of some "crap, second-rate free content just because they're being greedy." The concept of sharing seems to go above some people's heads... There is nothing wrong in sharing your work for free, as much as there is nothing wrong in asking for money from what you do. Both ways have their advantages and disadvantages, and in the end, the customer should be allowed to decide.)

Update: Elisa spokesperson says "users can freely download and share the content without fear." That is also a reason why looking into CC-licensed content is a good idea: if you use only that, you don't need to implement costly and complicated Digital Rights Management solutions which usually kill all usability. You can even play up the fact that "it's okay to share this" to gain extra publicity. Especially for a pilot, it makes little sense to spend all that money.

Update2: Nope says in the comment section: "Just in case somebody was wondering, the project website is at http://www.indica.tv/ where anyone can also submit their own video clips at http://www.indica.tv/cc/." Thanks!

Lack Of Originality

Lack Of Originality 08/16/2004 08:37 AM
S hyamalan may face legal action over Village - The Village can now join the long list of films accused of plagiarism in recent years. A lawsuit may be filed against M. Night Shyamalan's Blinding Edge Pictures and Disney for alleged plagiarism. Kiddie book writer Margaret Peterson Haddix claims that the movie bears disturbing similarities to her 1995 novel Running Out Of Time. While plagiarism of any kind is no laughing matter, it must be stated that the "disturbing similarity" is a plot twist many of us once used in our own stories back in grade school.

A Singular Lack of Integrity?

A Singular Lack of Integrity? 03/19/2003 10:24 PM

On the news now, a correspondent reported from the Azores where the pro-war-in-Iraq lobby have been meeting. She said something I found startling. Apparently at several points during the last few months it had looked like the UK/US position would get upwards of nine/ten votes in the Security Council. That was until France declared its intention to use its veto. At this point the other countries saw no advantage in voting to approve a war that couldn't happen anyway - and which might cost them an election. Almost to a man, they changed to a no vote.

I've expressed repeatedly my anxieties with any upcoming war with Iraq - that while it's clear to me that Saddam Hussein is an unpleasant man who should be removed, the route that I believe has to be taken is one of international collaboration. I do not believe that any country or group of countries should be able to act internationally (unless they have directly and individually been provoked) without at least the vaguest assent from the international community. My opinion has been that, should there be failings in the United Nations, then it is the job of the world to change the United Nations, not to disregard it.

But my whole position has relied on the integrity of the people concerned. If countries act in an honourable way, then I have respect for their opinions. And I've argued to defend the assumption that people are acting honourably. I have continually argued for France's right to express its dissent from the opinion of the international community. And I've been hostile to the possibility that France or the United States should try and bargain with, threaten or buy the votes of any other country on the Security Council or across the world.

But where is this integrity, exactly? France has crossed the line a couple of times. The United States and the UK have demonstrated that they're not averse to a little bullying as well. And now we hear that the votes of the rest of the Security Council depend only on what they think will play well with their electorates. Our world is run by monsters and hypocrites and if I could retire from it, I would.

Mourning the Lack of HTML UI Controls

Mourning the Lack of HTML UI Controls 07/14/2004 08:29 AM

Knobs and Trees: A great rant about how HTML hasn't really gone anywhere for years and Web UIs lag woefully behind client UIs, much as Joel Solsky stated about a month ago or so.

I think the essential problem with browsers is that users have not demanded of vendors [...] that they provide declarative tags for the things that are currently implemented using scripting. Why don't we have tags for menus, for trees and so on? [...]

HTML has largely stagnated because the W3C et al [...] because there has not been a systematic program to look at applications (web applications, applets, web-enabled applications) as the prime source of uses cases for new tags for HTML.
