How colds work
How colds work
05/04/2004 05:14 AMSomeone has given me a vicious cold. My third this year. I thought
that quitting smoking meant fewer colds, not more. Bugger. Anyway,
here's how colds work:
The nose contains shelf-like structures called turbinates, which help
trap particles entering the nasal passages. Material deposited in the
nose is transported by ciliary action to the back of the throat in
10-15 minutes. Cold viruses are believed to be carried to the back of
the throat where they are deposited in the area of the adenoid. The
adenoid is a lymph gland structure that contains cells to which cold
viruses attach.

now well past the point where any of us can keep up with all the blogs

Keeping up appearances
12/17/2004 06:33 PMWow, I think this is the longest gap in my blogging since
I started! I wish I could say I've been enjoying the sunshine or taking up a new hobby, but the truth is that the weather's
been horrible and I've just been run off my feet readjusting to life
in England and at University.
One thing I haven't been doing is reading blogs. My
aggregator (currently the excellent NewsFire, although NetNewsWire 2.0 could easily
steal my affections) has been lying dormant, and aside from
occasionally checking a few sites (congratulations Matt on the new job!) I've been reading more academic
papers than weblogs. My final year project is tentatively titled
"Collaborative annotation of web resources" and looks set to take up a
big chunk of my time over the next six months or so.
I certainly miss the information flood of blogging, but
there's something very liberating about dipping in every now and then
rather than following several hundred constant streams of
consciousness, Scoble style. I guess you could say I've been
re-evaluating my priorities. I'll certainly be scaling back some
commitments in the near future, though which ones and by how much I
have yet to decide.

Keeping cool
03/19/2003 10:25 PMIf you ever worked with a laptop actually in your lap you've
probably discovered just how freaking hot they can get. Sandia
National Laboratories is apparently working on a new way to keep
laptops (and by extension, laps) cool:
The Sandia
technology uses small (less than hair-thickness) copper "wicks" to
transport methanol—and waste heat—from one area of a computer to
another, where it can be dispersed more efficiently, comfortably and
compactly than with heat sinks. According to Sandia, the technique has
another advantage as well—it will allow for even hotter chips, meaning
faster processors and more dense designs.

08/11/2004 12:08 PMYou shouldn't have to forego sunlight and views to keep your house
cool. Researchers at the University of Liverpool have developed a
glass coating that allows visible spectrum and low-temperature
infrared light to pass through. But if the temperature goes above 29
degrees Celsius, the glass reflects the infrared radiation. According
to Scientific American, the coating, consisting of vanadium dioxide
with a pinch of tungsten, "currently has a somewhat unattractive
yellowy brown color, which the researchers hope to be able to remove
with future refinements."
