06/17/2005 03:50 PMOk here is a company that is on to something cool even though their
channel selection is a little thin. Why doesn't this company make a
card to put in Media Center PC's or am I missing something here. It
would seem to me to be the perfect accessory for a media center PC.
Otherwise the price drop is good and the one time fee is not bad
considering the price you have to pay for some media. [DesignTechnica<

Apple Update PowerBooks
Apple Update PowerBooks
02/01/2005 09:40 PMApple today announced a variety of updates across their popular line
of PowerBook laptops. Key new features include faster G4 chips
(1.67GHz), more memory (512MB) as standard, and better connectivity
via AirPort 802.11g and Bluetooth 2.0. The new PowerBooks also feature
scrolling 'TrackPad' technology and Apple's much hyped Sudden Motion
Sensor.
“Apple continues to lead the industry with the most innovative
notebooks,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of
Worldwide Product Marketing. “With new features like the scrolling
TrackPad and Sudden Motion Sensor, the new PowerBooks are the ultimate
combination of performance and portability.”

will be available for purchase online later this week. <a
href="http://www.theregister.co.uk/2005/01/27/apple_site_powerboo

company would be imminently announcing a G5 version of the PowerBook;
the rumours were triggered when a placeholder on the Apple website
with the text "apple_g5_powerbook". Clearly, this update
dismisses these rumours and suggests that a G5 PowerBook is still a
few months off. Apple VP Tim Cook has apparently described the task of
getting the G5 chip inside a laptop as "the mother of all thermal
challenges". In other Apple news, Apple was nominated
"<a

the top spot.

Apple Powerbooks Get Minor Update (Still

Apple Powerbooks Get Minor Update (Still
G4)
02/01/2005 09:09 PM
Apple has finally released updated Powerbooks—and they
aren't G5s. Top-end processor speeds max out at 1.67GHz and include 8x
SuperDrives DVD burners. The good news is that all models now come
with 512MB of memory standard, although only on SuperDrive
models—hopefully that's going to be typical across the Apple
line.
In addition to supporting new, faster Bluetooth 2.0, the new
Powerbooks add a 'scrolling TrackPad,' which lets you use two fingers
instead of one to scroll though web pages (it sounds a lot like SideTra
ck). Faster hard drives, faster processors, and more ram as
standard equipment make these all look like decent choices for someone
considering an upgrade, although certainly nothing revolutionary (and
they still are using the low-res screens).

Apple updates PowerBooks/iBooks
Apple updates PowerBooks/iBooks
04/19/2004 08:28 AMAfter a floury of announcements yesterday, Apple has today announced
updates for both the PowerBook and iBook product lines. PowerBook's
now have speeds of up to 1.5GHz G4, up to a 80GB hard drive, and a 4x
Superdrive. iBook's will make it to 1.2GHz G4 with an optional
Superdrive.
You can get the new 12" and 15" PowerBooks now, and the 17" starting
next month. All new iBooks are available immediately.
Will Apple own up to manufacturing
problems with 15" Powerbooks?
Will Apple own up to manufacturing
problems with 15" Powerbooks?
05/03/2004 01:38 PMThere's an enormous thread of PowerBook G4 15" owners on Apple's
discussion boards, going into detail on the "white spots" and "uneven
illumination" problem with this model. I bought mine last fall, and
had to return it twice (first one was DOA, the second had the
white-spots so bad that strangers on airplanes would come up to me
and say, "Jesus Christ, what the hell is wrong with your screen?").
Now I'm on my
third unit, and it's got the same problem:
screen at about 50 percent brightness, big white splotch in the middle
of the it.
It's still under warranty, but that doesn't do me any good: There's no
way I can part with my machine for 3-7 days while Apple fixes
it. Normally, I own two PowerBooks, the current one and a slightly
older one (so that I have a working unit during repairs), but when I
moved to Europe, I divested myself of all but a single CPU, so now I'm
pretty scr0d.
The scoop appears to be that Apple is replacing these lemons with the
new 1.5GHz models (which may or may not have the same problem), but I
doubt that they'll ship me the replacement, let me transfer my data
and then send back the old 'un. I'm just going to have to work off the
world's shittiest display until I can scrape up the dough to buy
another machine. Bummer.
Recently it has worsened to the point where I took it in today to the
Apple store in Old Orchard. The attending Genius immediately noticed
the uneven illumination of my display and suggested that it be sent in
to the depot for repair. He also mentioned that this was the first
time he had ever seen or heard of this problem before, and that there
are no reports in the knowledge base that described this issue. When I
mentioned to him that he might take a look at this thread in the Apple
Support discussions, he wanted no part of it. He said that he rarely
reads these forums, and dismissed it as "Oh well, people posting to
discussion groups are mostly complainers" (those were not his exact
words, but it was implied). Then I told him that people are posting
actual photos of this problem and that all of the symptoms look
identical for each person, which could indicate a manufacturing
defect. His response was that "for those people, I suppose perception
is reality".
