BoingBoing adds Technorati support - you
can too!
04/13/2004 04:40 AM

Tonight, BoingBoing added in a new feature that allows you to to find "Other blogs commenting on this post" for each post. It is an ingenious use of the Technorati search functionality embedded inside of the Movable Type template that BoingBoing uses. This is a great way for a site to provide a distributed commenting system that incorporates transparency and accountability - to comment on BoingBoing, you just post something that links to BoingBoing, and you'll show up in the "Other blogs commenting on this post" page. It also discourages spammers and tolls, because all comments must be posted on the commenter's blog, and those posts are accountable - even if you want to remain anonymous, the commenting blog can now itself be commented upon, ad infinitum.

Here's how you can add it to your own Movable Type weblog template:

1) Edit your blog
2) Click on "Templates"
3) Click on "Main Index"
4) Somewhere imbetween the <$MTEntries$> and the <$/MTEntries> tags, add this to your template:

<a href="http://www.technorati.com/cosmos/search.html?rank=&sub=mtcosmos& url=<$MTEntryPermalink$>" title="Technorati Cosmos">Other blogs commenting on this post</a>

5) Click on "Save"
6) Click on "Rebuild Site"

I just added it to this blog. Here's a link to the template for Sifry's Alerts main index page. Give it a go, and let me know how it works for you!

Lemon Cargo Wasted After False Security
Tip (Reuters)
08/09/2004 07:54 AM

Apple sells Matt Webb a lemon, then

Apple sells Matt Webb a lemon, then
treats him like crap
07/11/2004 05:32 PM
Matt Webb bought a 12" Powerbook and got a lemon. He's spent over a month calling Apple, trying to get it fixed, getting ignored, getting promises broken, not having his calls returned, getting the machine returned still broken, sending it back again. This is outrageous: Apple UK needs to do a better job if it plans on retaining customers.
It's happened again. Same problems as last time. mutt can't make temporary files, the computer won't shut down cleanly, then it won't boot (stays at the grey Apple screen) DiskWarrior can't repair it (and it freezes in Target Disk mode). If I go into verbose mode on book, the errors are:

Load of /sbin/mach_init, errno 2, trying /etc/mach_init Load of /etc/mach_init failed, errno 2

The hardware check, on the original CDs, comes back fine.

Coincidentally, it's after about 11 days of usage (again), and after the hard drive has got 45Gb of data on it (again).

I called tech support. Very helpful guy in the Danish tech support call centre. He says the next thing they'll ask me to do is reinstall.

Hang on, I've been here before.

I'm not going through this again.

I know this story. This is the one where I spend days doing what tech support ask, send my computer off, Apple hang onto it for months and send it back, still broken.

Leave it to ex-MTV VJ and techno-prophet Adam Curry to come up with what might be The Next Big Thing for Apple's iPod. Mr. Curry has done some quick and dirty hacking in AppleScript to create an application to automatically download new MP3 files from any of five different RSS feeds and copy them to playlists in the Mac iTunes application based upon the channel name. Connect an iPod, and the songs/files load onto the device automatically.

I'm using Safari 1.2 (v125) on Mac OS X Version 10.3.5. If I type bookmarks: (include the colon!) in the address bar, I'm taken to Safari's bookmark manager. Without the colon, I'm taken to http://www.bookmarks.com.

Bookmark Backup for Mozilla Firebird

Bookmark Backup for Mozilla Firebird 10/28/2003 11:07 PM
In scanning the MozillaZine Forums some while ago I happened upon a utility that automates Bookmark Backup. It's currently version 0.1.2 and available at this site. Here's a summary of what the plugin does and how it works, from it's author (Pike): An extremely basic extension that creates a backup...

NetNewsWire Save Bookmark In Omniweb
AppleScript

NetNewsWire Save Bookmark In Omniweb
AppleScript
09/25/2004 01:18 PM
Jonathan Wight posted a script that saves the current browser page in NetNewsWire as a bookmark in OmniWeb.

I love scripting. The latest beta of NetNewsWire is more scriptable than 1.x—and it’s a safe bet that it will get more and more scriptable in later versions.

One of the common scripting feature requests we got was a way to export subscriptions as OPML, so we added an export subscriptions command. You can choose whether or not it should be flat or with groups. This way you could automate a blogroll, for instance, or export your OPML file to share it with another aggregator.

We added a bunch of other things too—including the ability to script the browser, as Jonathan found.

One script I’d love to see someone write is an Email-this-Story script. It should pay attention to whether you’re looking at a news item or a web page. This is a common feature request, and it’s the kind of thing that a script can do quite well: there’s no need to wait for us to add the feature.

Another feature some people have asked for is a way to launch their weblog editor—MarsEdit, ecto, etc.—from within NetNewsWire but without creating a new post. That’s pretty easy to do: write a one-line script that reads tell application "MarsEdit" to activate. Save it and put it in NetNewsWire’s Scripts folder. (If you use another weblog editor, replace the name MarsEdit with your weblog editor’s name in the script.)
