Rise of the VideoNet

Rise of the VideoNet

Rise of the VideoNet 02/01/2005 09:33 PM

The Implications of Video P2P on Network Usage [PDF] is a paper I presented at a conference last fall, which will be included in a book from the Columbia Institute for Tele-Information. I point out that, to a first approximation, video peer-to-peer file sharing isn't just a significant use of the Internet; it is the Internet. And it's going to get much, much bigger in the years ahead.

The Rise of RSS

The Rise of RSS 03/20/2003 05:31 PM
I think I'm coming down with something; my throat is kinda itchy and I'm losing my sense of taste. Must be the thing that Jason had the other day. Either that, or my allergies are kicking in. Anyway, consider this a full-on request to any MT hackers out there. When someone leaves comments for one of my entries, I want to have a field for their RSS feed (as well as a link to their site). It's all I use anymore to keep up on my favorite Web resources. I'm not lazy - it's just that I want information to come to me. And why shouldn't it? I'd really like to move all of Lockergnome's newsletters to RSS ASAP. The protocol is well on its way to replacing e-mail newsletters - mark my words....

Rise of the Clueless 07/19/2004 09:54 AM
In Wired's July issue, Contributing writer Cory Doctorow writes about the movie I, Robot, in a slam at the late Dr. Isaac Asimov titled Rise of the Machines. I would rather Wired had found someone who had actually read more than two or three Asimov short stories. There is a lot in this article that is debatable but presented as concrete fact, and other "facts" which are downright false.

The (Possible) Rise Of E-Blackmail

The (Possible) Rise Of E-Blackmail 12/29/2003 12:22 PM
A Reuters report making the rounds today talks about a supposedly popular online scam these days, where someone sends an email threatening to wipe out your hard drive or put child porn on it - but who promise to go away if you pay them a modest fee (usually $20 to $30). The article claims that many people are falling for it, but doesn't give much evidence to back this up. They quote an anonymous "British detective" as their main source for this story. They also admit that reports of the extortion are "tailing off", but say that's only because most people won't report such e-blackmail. While I'm sure that there are people trying this scam, and it's likely that people do fall for it, I do wonder if it's really as big a problem as the article suggests it is. Quoting an anonymous source and not a single "victim" makes it seem like maybe this isn't such a big problem at all.

Getting a rise out of Reiser4

Getting a rise out of Reiser4 08/28/2004 01:03 AM

Last time I looked at ReiserFS was, I think, at least couple of years ago.It was a nice file system but I didn't find any use for it.  Two years later, Reiser4 is released and I still can't find a good use for it, but it sure has some intriguing one liner feature list that would any geek a bit of excitement:

  • Reiser4 is the fastest filesystem, and here are the benchmarks.
  • Reiser4 is an atomic filesystem, which means that your filesystem operations either entirely occur, or they entirely don't, and they don't corrupt due to half occuring. We do this without significant performance losses, because we invented algorithms to do it without copying the data twice.
  • Reiser4 uses dancing trees, which obsolete the balanced tree algorithms used in databases (see farther down). This makes Reiser4 more space efficient than other filesystems because we squish small files together rather than wasting space due to block alignment like they do. It also means that Reiser4 scales better than any other filesystem. Do you want a million files in a directory, and want to create them fast? No problem.
  • Reiser4 is based on plugins, which means that it will attract many outside contributors, and you'll be able to upgrade to their innovations without reformatting your disk. If you like to code, you'll really like plugins....
  • Reiser4 is architected for military grade security. You'll find it is easy to audit the code, and that assertions guard the entrance to every function.

Dancing trees?  I gotta look into that algorithm sometimes.  I wonder if variations of the algorithms will be called Disco or Samba?  ;-)  Hmm.  One of the testimonials is LivingXML which is a native XML engine built-on top of Reiser.  That's nice except LivingXML seems to be, well, dead.  Oh, well.

Linux Still on the Rise 03/20/2003 01:05 PM
Citing a desire to move away from proprietary software systems, such as those sold by Microsoft, many companies are considering making the jump from using Windows on their servers to running Linux. Although there are some potholes in that road, many companies have found that switching results in cheaper operations and generally is worth the effort.

Conn Hallinan, an "analyst" for Foreign Policy in Focus, a liberal/left-wing think tank, has written a strange agitprop piece on military robotics. In it he explains that the DARPA Grand Challenge and military robots in general are a "coldly calculated" conservative plot masterminded by Bush, a "powerful circle of arms manufactures", and an "empire-minded group of politicians" to develop "Frankenstein killing machines" that target civilians. His article also appears in the Asia Times online with an amusing illustration that adds to the humor.
