National "Computer Ate My Vote" Day

National "Computer Ate My Vote" Day 07/13/2004 12:29 PM

VerifiedVoting.org has declared today National "Computer Ate My Vote" Day in order to raise awareness regarding the vast numbers of completely paperless electronic voting machines that are going in across the country.

VerifiedVoting.org and the Verified Voting Foundation champion reliable and publicly verifiable elections in the United States.

We advocate the use of voter-verified paper ballots (VVPBs) for all elections in the United States, so voters can inspect individual permanent records of their ballots before they are cast and so meaningful recounts may be conducted. We also insist that electronic voting equipment and software be open to public scrutiny and that random, surprise recounts be conducted on a regular basis to audit election equipment.

I'm all for computer automation, but as a programmer, I know all to well the problems that can arise, and completely electronic voting scares the bejeesus out of me, especially given the fact that the leading vendor, Diebold, has a pretty bad track record. VerifiedVoting.org is taking a pretty wise approach to this; they're not against all electronic voting machines, they just insist that the machines leave a paper trail. Otherwise, the fact that the whole election hinges on a few database entries will leave us with a lot more problems than some dangling chads.

Real IT support call I made today

Real IT support call I made today 09/23/2004 06:24 AM

Hey Tech Support, Yes what can we help you with, Got to work this morning and Autocad was de-installed from my workstation? Yes we uninstalled about 20 copies last night!, Why in the hell did you do that?, We had a list and your office was on the list that does not need it anymore. (Veins in my forehead start throbbing) Put the supervisor on the line now. (5 Minute wait) This is the Supervisor, I hear you have an issue with us removing Autocad. Me, Are you at your terminal,, Yes,, Ok I want you to login into our file server,, Several moments pass. I want you to do a search in this dir and see how many autcad files are in their and sort them by date since last modified, I will put you on hold as I need to make another call be back with you in 10 minutes.

I will not bore you with the rest of the details, needless to say he found nearly 20,000 autocad drawings with nearly 2000 of them having been updated in the last 6 months. It took most of the day but Autocad is loaded back on my department PC tonight. I did some quick math on lost productivity today and I'm still pissed.

U.S.-based Yeahronimo Media Ventures Inc. has acquired the rights to the Commodore computer brand for $33 million dollars. Tulip Computers International BV – which has held the rights to Commodore since 1997 – said it has agreed to sell all remaining patents and the Commodore brand to U.S.-based Yeahronimo, best known for providing music and video downloads via the Internet, according to a Silicon Valley News report. Yeahronimo will use the Commodore name to increase awareness of its services and hopes to cash in on a recent renaissance of interest in vintage games and computers, Chief Executive Ben van Weijhe said in a telephone interview. Yeahronimo also plans to sell its own Commodore-branded MP3 players and simple video game systems offering versions of the old Commodore games using a website called "Commodore World." Commodore became a household name in the 1980s with its early personal computers before going bankrupt in 1994.

Oliver 1.2.0 (Default branch)

Oliver 1.2.0 (Default branch) 06/24/2005 07:14 PM
Screenshot Oliver (formerly "WebShare") is a PHP-based FTP front-end, released under the GPL. It allows people to access files normally only available via FTP, effectively providing users with a complete Web-based file management system that, if SSL is enabled on the Web server, uses a single secure connection. This makes it far simpler to use through a firewall. At present, Oliver has only been tested with ProFTPd and PureFTPd but it should work with many others.
License: GNU General Public License (GPL)
Changes:
This release adds Czech, Bulgarian, and Japanese translations. Syslog or flat file logging of logins has been added. Files now have "direct links" associated with them. These are simple URLs that reference the file directly and may be distributed to valid users, for example as a link in an email. HTTP authentication is used to validate the users in this case. To aid upgrading, a simple Perl script, updateconf.pl, has been including that helps to migrate config settings.

Oliver Sacks and his iridium ingot

Oliver Sacks and his iridium ingot 08/16/2004 02:15 PM
George Lazenby wrote a must-read Live Journal entry about the famous neurologist/author Oliver Sacks and his iridium fetish. Sacks had several buttons of super-dense iridium that he wanted to melt into a single ingot. Iridium has a very high melting temperature (2,446 C), so Lazenby and Sacks went to a company that has an electron beam furnace. The "batsh*t insane Russsians" who worked there melted the iridium buttons while LazenbyTheodore Gray* shot video, which you can see at hisLazenby's site.
furnaceA few months ago, Oliver bought a kilo of these buttons, and kept them in, what was for a while, the heaviest 6 fl. oz. jar of current jam in the universe. While I was up there, he gave me one of these buttons, which I promptly nearly killed myself with. But I'm getting ahead of myself.

So Oliver has these buttons in this current jam jar. The next logical step is to make the buttons one with each other, to get as close as possible to theoretical density. How to achieve this? Max's arc furnace can only fuse 5 gram buttons (poorly) into irregular buttons of about 50 grams. No, this project calls for industry, with its pumping pistons, its smoking smokestacks and desolated landscapes. Enter ********** [company name deleted]. Exeunt pumping pistons, smoking smokestacks and desolated landscapes. This, is in fact, the setting for the most advanced high purity metal processing plant in the United States.

UPDATE George sez: Thanks for posting the story to BB, there's just one thing, I didn't shoot video or take any pictures, that was all the work of Theodore Gray. Link

OLIVER Data Viewer 2.3.0 (Default
branch)

OLIVER Data Viewer 2.3.0 (Default
branch)
03/17/2005 03:35 AM
Screenshot OLIVER is MassGIS's OnLIne data ViewER. Written as a stand-alone Java application (and deployed via Java Web Start) it allows you to browse, view, and download (if supported) data from the MassGIS maintained WMS and WFS servers. In short, it is a specific take on a WMS/WFS client.
Changes:
Minor bugfixes, but a major internal rearchitecture. A ZIP code is no longer require for geocoding, and there is now support for cross-street geocoding. The ability to zoom to a specific scale by double-clicking (or right-clicking) on the scale-bar has been added. Many new extensibility points are included in the codebase. The ability to create "custom" viewers by picking and choosing tools/features from the base viewer is now implemented in a basic manner.
