Japan's WellTone has a new USB Skype handset coming out
which may or may not contain a version of Skype in its internal 64MB
of memory. The uncertainty lies in how the company is yet to receive
permission from Skype to include their software. Other than that, the
"Skype USB Handyphone (WB-2001)" is your standard for a USB
handset.

IIS and Skype
IIS and Skype
02/01/2005 10:12 PMAre you having trouble with IIS. I have been for months with
Windows XP Pro workstation. I have IIS installed for development
purposes. I was getting errors connecting IIS. VS.NET would inform me
that my webserver was not running ASP 1.1. Telnetting to the local
port, I would get garbage characters. SPYWARE? Scaned, etc...
Nothing found. I looked around the web for answers and people
were complaining about Norton Internet Security. So I uninstalled.
Nothing.
Netstat -b will display all open ports and their originating
application or listening app. I connected via telnet and looked at
netstat. Skype was running on port 80? Turned off Skype. Telnet could
not connect. Dammit. There is a check box in the skype options under
connection which says "Use port 80 as an alternative connection
point." Uncheck this. For some damn reason they have this on by
default. 2 hours of my life gone.

Skype Goes Mac
Skype Goes Mac
08/31/2004 09:24 AMSkype just launched a public beta
version of its
new OS X
client software. This means the Voice over IP software that has
almost 10 million registered users is now on every major desktop
platform -- another major step forward for the product and the people
behind it.
I've been playing with a pre-beta version of the OS X software, and
had some difficulty. The new version does seem to be an improvement. I
already have VoIP at home, but this will be quite useful when I'm
traveling and find a broadband connection, among other things.
At the moment, I'm finding the most intriguing feature of Skype to be
its built-in encryption. Since the product also offers instant
messaging, I now have something that none of the big IM vendors are
bothering to offer individual end users like me: end-to-end
encryption. I'm asking my IM "buddies" to consider switching to Skype
for this reason. Especially when I'm on a wireless system, IM
shouldn't be visible to the entire world.
I had a conversation with Niklas Zennström, Skype's co-founder
and CEO, yesterday. It's no secret that he has big ambitions for this
product and company, and some of those ambitions are starting to be
more clear.
One is connecting with other kinds of gear than just PCs.
Zennström told me that Skype is launching a set of APIs, or
applications programming interfaces, to help hardware vendors put the
product on their handsets and other equipment. He said Siemens is
already doing so.
I wish Skype was more open in some ways, such as using industry
standards. But the company has done a lot right so far, and it's hard
to argue with its achievements. (I'll have more on all this in
tomorrow's column.)
Skype is a true phenomenon of the Net.

The final official release of Skype is finally here. The new
version 1.0 has just become available and can be freely downloaded.
Several the great new surprises included. Skype allows people
everywhere to make free, unlimited, superior quality voice calls via
its innovative peer-to-peer software, it is available in 20 languages
and is probably one of the fastest growing voice communications
offering worldwide with over 7 millions users acquired in the last 11
months….

Skype Out
06/17/2005 04:25 PMYou know what works? Skype Out. You plug a microphone and headset into
your laptop (or use the built-in ones), plug your laptop into a
broadband connection, pay Skype 10 euros for about 10 hours of talk
time, and you can call anywhere in the world. Plain old Skype lets you
call any other Skype user for free, computer to computer, but Skype
Out lets you call from your computer to other people's phones. The
connections have been a bit echo-y, and calls to mobile phones are way
more expensive -- 4.14 minutes to the US from London cost me...

03/29/2005 06:51 AMSkype's free calling Internet-based calling application is a hot
commodity. The company claims 31 million people are using Skype to
make free calls to one another and 160,000 new people are coming on
board each day. Joining to discuss the phenomenon is Niklas Zennstrom,
Skype's CEO and co-founder.
