Robots With Wearable Computers?
Robots With Wearable Computers?
02/10/2004 05:32 PMRoland Piquepaille
writes
"BBC News Online reports that "scientis
ts are developing a wearable, 'intelligent' computer system to
help humans or robots explore Mars on future missions to the Red
Planet." "The 'cyborg astrobiologist' consists of a person equipped
with a compact computer, camera, finger mouse, head-mounted display
and keyboard." Patrick McGuire, who designed the system, said that a
user, human or robot, can influence the system by giving it values
biasing towards 'polysaturated pixels.' My blog
also includes a photo of McGuire playing with one of his robotics
devices." While the article says that the system is designed to
be used by a human, they also admit that it could be "worn" by a
robot. Am I the only one who finds it somewhat amusing to think of a
robot sporting a wearable computer? They're robots... you can build
this stuff in...

Wearable Robots
Wearable Robots
06/14/2004 06:03 PMRemember the scene in the first Alien movie where Ripley fights the
Queen baddie using a semi-robotic lifting machine? Well, it looks like
that technology is getting closer to real-world applications. Inventor
Steven Jacobsen is s
howing off a prototype of his device, and is working with robotics
gurus Sarcos to make it a
production reality.
Strap it on, go for a walk on the treadmill or up and down stairs
while carrying a 90-kilogram load on your back, and it feels as if
you’re carrying nothing, says Jacobsen. You can even balance on one
foot with a person on your back and barely feel any more fatigued than
if you were standing by yourself, he adds. The exoskeleton adds
strength because it stays in parallel with the user’s legs and pushes
on the ground.
Military uses seem to be first in line for this device, but I can
think of lots of other uses for it in industry, construction, even in
nursing homes — anywhere lifting and lifting-related injuries
are involved. I don't think they'll have one ready for my backyard
landscaping project though.

One Step Closer To Wearable Displays
One Step Closer To Wearable Displays
05/07/2004 05:44 PMPeople have been talking about display technology embedded in a pair
of glasses for years, and it's looking like
they may not be that far away. Microdisplay
companies are doing good business building mini-screens for digital
cameras and mobile phones, but the idea of wearable heads-up displays
is where they expect the big money to come from. They're already
being used in military and medical environments, but they're moving
one step down the latter to industrial uses as well. From there, it's
not that much farther to go for more general purposes. Right now,
most of the heads-up displays are still bulky and ugly (though, not
nearly as bulky as they were a few years ago), but the companies
clearly realize where this is headed, and are working hard to make
glasses with embedded displays that are both functional and "cool"
looking. Combined with a phone or a personal mobile gateway device,
and you could have full internet access all the time. As someone in
the article points out, at that point, what we use internet access for
may change in completely unexpected ways.

I, T-shirt: wearable movie trailers at
NextFest
05/17/2004 10:31 PMIn
The Hollywood Reporter today, an item about t-shirts that
display movie trailers -- as seen at both E3 and NextFest last week.
Coming soon to a T-shirt near you: trailers for "I, Robot," starring
Will Smith. In the never-ending search to capture the attention of
consumers bombarded by commercials, billboards and a massive array of
other advertisements, 20th Century Fox debuted an innovative new
guerilla marketing tactic at E3 last week -- T-shirts embedded with
video screens that played "I, Robot"
trailers.
The two women who wore the video T-shirts as they walked around E3
drew crowds and TV news crews on hand to cover the gaming conference
at the Los Angeles Convention Center. 20th Century Fox is the first
studio -- or business of any kind -- to use the video T-shirt
marketing tactic developed by San Francisco-based Brand Marketers.

Scalar Corp 7-Gram Wearable Screen
Scalar Corp 7-Gram Wearable Screen
04/05/2005 09:18 AM
I4U has a few details on an impressively lightweight LCD
screen from Scalar Corp. that can be mounted on ordinary glasses that
weighes a scant seven grams. The screen offers a simulated 14-inch
screen with 180,000 pixels (roughly television resolution). It's not
terribly expensive, either, at just $460 or so.
I don't have a subscription to Nikkei.net, though, so I have no
idea what sort of interface it uses. Much smaller than this, though,
and it'll be directly integrated into glasses themselves and we might
actually start wearing stuff like this.
