Naked lady sushi

Naked lady sushi 11/11/2003 08:04 PM
The hottest Japorn export since bukkake? Or a dehumanizing, exploitative stunt? The provocative trend of presenting sushi on the body of an au naturel female model migrates to the US. Chaos ensues. Please, please, be careful with the wasabi.
Chopsticks at the ready, patrons line up. Hours earlier, across town on the campus of the University of Washington, eight activists, mostly Asian-American women, express outrage at what they call the prostitution of sushi and the exploitation of women. They plot their strategy. (...)While the promoter and the sushi model say this melding of prandial and sexual is performance art, Bonzai's patrons --men and women of various ethnicities --say it merely adds to the restaurant's sensual vibe. Opponents say treating women like a serving platter reinforces attitudes that make domestic and sexual violence so prevalent.

The Times on frozen sushi

The Times on frozen sushi 04/09/2004 04:06 PM

Interesting article in today's NY Times about the common practice of freezing sushi fish, Sushi Fresh From the Deep...the Deep Freeze.

But because of health concerns and growing demand, 50 to 60 percent of sushi in the United States is frozen at some point in its journey from the ocean, according to wholesalers. And rare is the sushi restaurant that tells customers upfront that they may be eating fish that has been in deep freeze for up to two years.

Most would be even more surprised to learn that if the sushi has not been frozen, it is illegal to serve it in the United States.

I used to be a huge sushi fan, but lately I find the appeal is wearing off. After having it for dinner last night, I was even thinking, "I'm done with sushi for a while." Reading this article doesn't make me want to change my mind, I don't care how 'fresh' the fish still tastes. There's just something about frozen fish that I find totally unappealing. Even if that's the way I've been eating it all along.

Sushi restaurants as economic indicators

Sushi restaurants as economic indicators 04/23/2004 10:43 AM
Tyler Cowen, economist and co-proprietor of the excellent Marginal Revolution, recently gave a talk to the International Association of Culinary Professionals and offered some food-related investment advice: If sushi restaurants are new to a country, and are succeeding, buy shares in the stocks of that country. Raw fish, of course, can be toxic. Quality can be hard to monitor with the naked eye. Sushi consumption is a sign that people...

Naked sushi in Seattle update

Naked sushi in Seattle update 12/02/2003 04:57 PM
Our pornpals at DazeReader say:
Naked sushi in Seattle update. Dan Savage ridiculed both the "clenchbutts" for protesting naked sushi and the local media for giving them attention. His one criticism: "How come no boy plates?" In the interests of equal opportunity objectification, The Stranger sponsored Naked Doughnuts at the same restaurant on a recent Friday night. "Two good-looking guys will be laid out on the bar and covered with Top Pot doughnuts. . . . Ogle the boys, eat the donuts, fuck the clenchbutts." The restaurant owners invited the two men back for sushi night, so now you can eat sushi off naked women and naked men in Seattle. Bonzai gallery.

Xeni Jardin: Last week, in the throes of a low-carb-induced delirium, I posted a bunch of stuff on BoingBoing about high-concept chow. Twinkies, sushi, chocolate, and combinations thereof. One of those entries pointed to a photo of "savory twinkies" by reader Ranjit Bhatnagar; he has now very kindly blogged the recipe for us all. He says, "Of course, it really comes down to 'Wrap cheese with polenta, bake, and serve,' but it was more fun to do a photo essay." If you look closely at the recipe photos, you can see a few clumps of snow from last week's New York blizzard. Link to Ranjit's recipe, and Link to a beautiful collection of "produce scans" on his blog.

Speaking of odd food, here's some Hello Kitty-shaped sushi (thanks numlok), and there is a chocolate cake disguised as a giant head of cabbage. (thanks, heidi). Special thanks to all the readers who submitted that website about people in Japan who carve elaborate designs in the flesh of watermelons -- but I'm kinda holding out for the website about people in Japan who carve elaborate watermelon designs in their own flesh.

Seattle sushi restaurants aren't the first to serve food on the bodies of naked women, nor are various Japanese porn sites displaying X-rated human sashimi platter tableaus. Boingboing pal Eli the Bearded points us to this image by William Klein: Photograph of Models and the Surrealist Group around Meret Oppenheim's "Festin," 1960. The image was a fashion shot for Vogue magazine, under the title of Inaugural Feast in the March 1960 issue.

Remember the string of earlier posts on BoingBoing about restaurants serving sushi on the bodies of clothes-free hotties? The owner of a Japanese restaurant in the Chinese city of Kunming had the same idea:
The Hefengcun Huaishi restaurant launched a promotional "feast on a beauty's body," for local journalists last Friday, hiring two attractive fair-skinned college girls to lie on tables, with sushi and other food and flowers placed on their bare bodies covered with thin gauze. The reports caused a firestorm in the local and national press with many readers slamming the novel dining trend as offensive and insulting to women.(...) Known as "Nyotai Mori" in Japan, the feasts date back to ancient times and are often offered in special hotspring resorts today, but are generally left off menus. They are offered to aficionados on request.

BoingBoing pal Geisha Asobi points us to Takako Umemiya's NYO-TA-I-MO-RI-Project (Link), and says, "She is very funny!!!!" I don't speak or read Japanese, but maybe a better-educated BoingBoing reader can contribute a partial translation. Takako's website features her sashimi-clad body in an apparent spoof of the ongoing International Naked Lady Sushi Controversy (marginally work-safe, I suppose).

Wind Power

Wind Power 01/04/2004 12:04 PM

New farm seen as model for future of wind energy: Here's a positive story on wind power and a new wind farm in California.

The 90 turbines at High Winds can generate 162 megawatts of electricity, enough to power about 75,000 homes, according to Florida-based FPL Energy, which owns and operates High Winds along with 30 other wind facilities in 10 states.

Seventy-five thousand homes from 90 turbines? So one turbine could power...833 homes. I know a lot of small towns around South Dakota that could benefit from just one turbine. Think about it — one turbine per small town. Energy problems solved.

I've always wanted to have a windmill powering my house. I'm not an Earth muffin or a tree-hugger or anything, but I just think it'd be cool to be self-sufficient like that. Throw in a fresh-water well and a satellite dish with broadband, and you'd be set.
