jsx777.jpg imageNow I initially just linked this review of the JVC JX-S777 so I could run a picture of the thing—I have multiple-interface lust, for real. And while the JX-S777 isn't the sort of thing that will be totally future-proof—it's lack of DVI or HDMI HDTV interfaces pretty much guarantee that—if you work with a lot of composite and s-video sources, its ability to convert signals on the fly is pretty handy as both a video mixer or a home theater router. You can get something with a lot more capability, but probably not for $600.

That said, what's the baddest of the asses in video switchers these days?

Tivoli Audio Model Three Reviewed

Tivoli Audio Model Three Reviewed 12/30/2004 11:20 AM

spif_tv3.jpg imageTivoli Audio makes classy, monophonic radios that win nothing but acclaim for their rich, full sound. And with their small footprint, they would make a perfect clock radio, you'd think. When it comes to sound quality, the $200 Tivoli Model Three seems to live up to typical Tivoli quality, but some silly decisions in the way the clock and snooze work make this alarm worth a first glance, but maybe not a second. Fortunately, this review on Spiffle has lots of pictures, which makes shallow glancing easy.

NHJapan MPM-20X Video Player Reviewed 07/19/2004 01:05 PM

mpm_soroban.jpg image

SorobanGeeks' Portable Media World has a killer review of the MPM-20X from NHJapan, a (duh) portable media player with a built-in 30GB hard drive. One of the best things about the MPM-20X is the fact that it can record via direct from a video source, instead of being reliant on a computer to get its video files (although you can do that, too, of course). The complete package looks very nice, with a full-featured dock and a lot of smart design choices (like a kick stand!), as well as the freedom that comes from not being tied into Microsoft's Portable Media Center system.

So why does PMW recommend to pass on the MPM-20X? The heart of the device, the LCD screen, is pants. Ugly, grainy, washed-out pants.

Copyfight debate of the century video
and audio torrents
04/19/2005 03:38 AM
Cory Doctorow: Last week's Cornell Debate between EFF senior IP attorney Fred Von Lohmann, copyfighting media studies prof Siva Vaidhyanathan, and counsel from the MPAA, RIAA, Napster 2 and Universal was astounding, the most engrossing three hours of video I've watched all month.

Unfortunately and inexplicably, this was only available as a crappy, dropout-prone Real stream from Cornell, which meant you couldn't load the audio onto your iPod or download the video to show your friends later.

Now someone's converted the video to something else (not sure what) and posted a .torrent, packaged with soemthing called "Matroska" that seems like a good way to add bookmarks and such to video (I'd be interested in knowing whether this packaging presents any barrier to someone who simply wants to download the video and watch it in her player of choice). There's also an Ogg of the audio available (I'd love to see this converted to MP3 for iPod users and posted as a Torrent!). Video Torrent Link, Ogg Torrent Link

From Text To Audio To Video... Easy
Creation Makes Its Mark

From Text To Audio To Video... Easy
Creation Makes Its Mark
04/05/2005 04:42 AM
Citizen journalism is a term that's getting a lot of attention these days, but citizen media may be the real trend under way. It seems that the tools of media creation are getting easier and cheaper every day. Blogs did it for text; podcasting (though, vast ly overhyped by some) is trying to get there with audio -- and the next obvious place is video. Podcasting may still be getting its sea legs, but Google is already looking to archive and search personal videos from individuals. Touted as video blogging, the service will allow the public to submit their video take, or takes, as it were, for public consumption -- which sounds somewhat similar to the recently launched Our Media project, by Brewster Kahle's Web Archive. Meanwhile, receiving even more attention today, web-based TV network Current -- the youth-oriented venture spearheaded by Al Gore -- will put its spin on the same concept with news segments on the latest buzz, as determined by Google search data. The progression seems natural, if not inevitable -- cheaper tools of production allowing anyone to create media. Text is the easiest, but it's not hard to see audio and video following. Giving amateurs the means to produce and distribute their own content is certainly a noble beginning, but as we've seen with blogs and podcasts, quality control could play a far bigger role in any individual broadcaster's staying power. While it's likely that many of the new content will be derided as being weak (or just plain painful to read/watch/listen), that isn't really the point. It comes with the territory. As the tools of production are spread further, the average quality may decrease, but the ability for a few to produce content that was never even possible before far outweighs the mountains of bad content that will be produced.
