Dell Pocket DJ Reviewed 02/01/2005 09:08 PM

pcmagPpocketdj.jpg imagePC Magazine reviews the Dell Pocket DJ and likes it just fine, calling it "fine, affordable, [and] no-frills." Some people have harped on about the DJ series' interface, preferring a touch-pad or wheel over the rocker switch, but if you're going to choose a cheaper player you're going to have to skimp somewhere. In the Pocket DJ, that also happens to be the lack of FM tuning and recording and calendar sync-up, but for something that costs $180 (and likely much cheaper once Dell turns on the coupon faucet for the device) you can't really complain.

eten_P300B.jpg imageAnd while we're on the phone tip, PDA Buyer's Guide has reviewed the E-TEN P300B, a compact, if not powerful Pocket PC phone that will be sold under the FutureCom Global brand here in the US. It's not a beast, with a 200MHz processor, although an ample amount of RAM, plus SDIO, but considering the P300B can be purchased unlocked -- can only be purchased unlocked, in fact -- it looks like a decent, fairly cheap option for someone who wants a GSM Pocket PC without being locked into a single carrier.

mvisto_400.jpgI4U has a review on the Mvisto DivX Player. Very similar indeed to the Wigobyte Mvolt-100 Media Flash we mentioned last week, it lacks the Mvolt's soft, supple curves but includes a 40GB hard drive. (It may very well be an OEM derivative of the Wigobyte device, actually.) The Mvisto excels in playing back DivX files on your TV and can even read ISO files, allowing you to copy full DVDs with playback of all its special features. The on-screen interface actually looks quite charming, and it's powered through its USB port. (You use an adapter to plug into the mains when playing back on your TV.) The review is overall very favorable and the Mvisto is only $325 through MacPower distributors, although you have to contact them to purchase a unit for now.

cnet_pma430.jpgThe Sharp Zaurus may no longer be with us, but that might not be all bad, since the hack-ready Archos PMA 430 is getting very decent reviews. It's a portable video device first like the AV420 before, but adding in a touch-screen interface and the same Qtopia Linux-based environment of the Zaurus. That means it's effectively a PDA with a 30GB hard drive with Wi-Fi and USB Host capability. If that doesn't give you some ideas, then I don't know what does.

The downside? Archos wants $800 for all that power, so you'd almost be better off buying a cheap, ultra-portable laptop.

PDA Buyer's Guide has a good review of the $250 peripheral, and while there's maybe not a ton of new information for GPS devotees, if you've already gotten an X30 and have been curious about What GPS Can Do For You, it's a perfectly adequate launching point. Do bear in mind, though, that there's nothing stopping you from using one of the surfeit of Bluetooth GPS options out there with your Axim (most of which seem to be made by the same manufacturer, even).

Dell W1700 LCD TV Reviewed 09/23/2004 11:08 AM

dell_w1700.jpg imagePCMag has a short review of Dell's W1700 LCD TV, one of the first in Dell's new consumer television line (right as Gateway is leaving that market, oddly enough). They found it to be generally good all around, image-quality-wise (including the acclaimed Faroudja DCDI image processing), but the best part was the huge number of included cabling. Even relatively obscure interconnects like a DVI-D cable were included, which might not seem like that big of a deal, but when you are only spending $700 on a TV, it can be frustrating to turn around and have to drop another $100 on various high-end cabling.

Read - Dell W1700 LCD TV [PCMag]

Update: Oh hey, I'm an idiot. I thought this was the new model, but apparently this is from last year (ack!). The W2600 is the new 26-inch model, not this one. My mistake!

xps2.jpgHardOCP has reviewed the XPS 2, the second generation gaming laptop from the usually staid Dell. Gone from this new incarnation of the XPS, thankfully, is the death’s head on the case cover. New features include a move to Pentium M and NVIDIA’s GeForce Go 6800 mobile graphics chipset, making this a truly portable gaming laptop as opposed to a fat Pentium 4 in an ugly desktop replacement body.

The lads at HardOCP got into the nitty gritty, even going so far as to describe the integrated PowerMizer battery saving features. While the XPS 2 doesn’t have cool neon ground FX—yet—it seems like a step in the right direction.

ASUS_A730.jpg imageBrighthand is reporting that the Axim X50 - the first VGA Pocket PC from Dell, at least in its top-end model - is being pushed back to November, at least if the request for an extension with the FCC is any indictor (it is). Now that the FCC will keep information silent on their web site until a product launch, a push back to November probably means what we think it means. Oh, and it's November 8th, for what it's worth, so put down the wallets for a while.

There are other VGA Pocket PCs hitting the streets, though. In fact, PDA Buyer's Guide just reviewed the Asus A730 which should hit the streets any day now.

What Dell Support Thinks of Dell

What Dell Support Thinks of Dell 03/30/2005 04:59 PM

In an InfoWorld Gripe Line Blog, anonymous Dell employees are asked to make their feelings known about working for Dell. As we all know, Dell moved their tech support to India and they have employees in other parts of the world now too. It sounds like the new users dumb questions and working with Windows constant crashing and errors have driven even the Indian support workers to the brink of giving up. Here are a few quotes from the above story..

Back about eighteen months ago, the comments started off pretty apologetic about the Dell support gripes readers were airing. A poster who said he or she had just resigned after six months with Dell support in Hyderabad said that Dell technicians would sometimes know right off that a problem required a replacement component, "but we are bound by company policy which prohibits us from dispatching components until we finish the script given us by Dell management," the poster wrote. "I basically felt really bad in situations wherein I had to make really old people open up their computers, and I did in fact meet people on the phone who would be in tears if we told them that they need to open their machines.

"I too am working in Dell tech support," the poster said, saying his job had been to route calls to the proper support group. "The great thing is that tomorrow is my last day here. Great because this by far has been one of the least gratifying and frustrating positions I have ever held. Yes, there are extensive and considerable problems with Dell tech support. Their outsourcing to India is not even the least of them. Every day is a continuous assault by absolutely clueless and irate customers and an ineffective phone-based support system that is enough to make anyone crack. I'm saying that it all sucks: Dell's systems and their support and the morons who purchase them ... So many times I've had to restrain myself from telling customers who are whining about what a piece their Dell is that, hey, guess you should've bought a Mac. Goodbye, Dell!"

ATI TV Wonder USB 2.0 Reviewed

ATI TV Wonder USB 2.0 Reviewed 09/01/2004 12:01 PM

ViperLair reviews the ATI TV Wonder USB 2.0, a sort of low-rent option for those you want to add a TV tuner or video-in to their machines, but would prefer an outboard piece of equipment instead of cracking open their case and dropping in a daughter board. Don't expect huge features out of the $100 brick, though, as the inputs are limited to coax, s-video, and composite - the higher-quality component video is not to be found. On the upside, the inclusion of USB 2.0 in this new model allows it to transfer encoded video to your computer with far less compression than earlier, USB 1.1 models, meaning your signal will travel from outside to your hard drive relatively unscathed, analog warts and all.

For a quick solution, especially for something like a laptop that can't even get a better quality bit of hardware, it's probably worth taking a look at. A "Pro" version should be out soon that includes a remote.

Although the review is a little heavy on pictures and a little light on opinion, they seem fairly impressed with the device. It does look nice enough (from a feature perspective, at least; its case is ugly as sin), and I've got fairly high hopes for this one. DRM-free means, if nothing else, greater ease of use as a rule of thumb.
