Russian combat jets were scr ambled yesterday in response to an attacking "aircraft" from their tiny Baltic neighbor, Lithuania. Apparently the Russians are still using their pre-1940 radar equipment.

"Our fighter approached the trespasser to make it land or leave Russian air space", the press service said. "A closer examination showed that there was a cloud instead of a light plane and it was coming from the territory of Lithuania," the Baltic Fleet’s spokesman said.
Wasn't there a Bond movie about this once?

Howard Stern's anti-Bush rhetoric may be more influential than people think. With all the extra media attention that a half a million dollars worth of FCC fines can garner, it looks like Howard's rearing up against George. It's weird to see an article like this after how pro-war and pro-Bush the Stern show was after 9-11. (Free registration required, ctnow.com)

"Yes, I'm talking about that ever-present application that handles e-mail, scheduling and some word processing tasks. Odds are pretty good that you've got a copy of it installed on your laptop, and that you take your portable with you when you travel. (Regarding the latter point, a recent survey by Harris Interactive found that more than one in four laptop PC owners say their machine is one of their "most prized possessions," and nearly a third said they've regretted leaving it at home on trips and have turned around to retrieve it on at least one occasion.) Outlook is to travelers what a paper clip is to MacGyver. It does a lot more than you think. (My apologies to those who aren't familiar with television show which had its heyday in the 1980s and '90s.)"

WE READ with some bemusement that the victory Microsoft had with the European Union recently was down to the PR flair of Steve "there's a kind of hush" Ballmer. Because he negotiated with the EU rather than Bill Gates, resulting in its famous antitrust victory, and resulting in a big fine and a cut down version of Windows, if the ruling stands.

Air Force Developing Top Secret Drone

Air Force Developing Top Secret Drone 08/03/2004 10:50 AM

darkstar_ec95-43271-5.jpg image

All DefenseTech has to do to get my attention is say "SR-71" and I'm turgid with anticipation, so when they passed along information that the Air Force is developing a top-secret (not anymore, suckers!) super-stealthy UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) that will act as a sort of robotic update to the Blackbird, I was, suffice it to say, like whoa. Apparently, since slipping deadlines have caused the next generation of spy satellites to be delayed, Air Force commanders are rushing to develop an unmanned plane that can not only travel at high speeds to high altitudes for long distance reconnaissance, but can also deploy weapons ranging from "high-precision munitions to devices that can emit pulses of electromagnetic energy to wreak havoc on everything from power grids to electronic equipment."

Although there don't appear to be pictures of the new death bird flying yet, sources indicate the new system is based on research done on the Tier II (which became the Global Hawk UAV) and Lockheed's Darkstar [pictured].

I love me some flying death robots, I do.

The Cloud Allows SIM Authentication

The Cloud Allows SIM Authentication 05/04/2004 02:03 PM
The Cloud customers can now get authenticated using SIM cards: Transat Technologies enables the service. SIM-based authentication is already being used by some hotspots in Europe and is expected to be a widely used authentication method there. Because Europeans use GSM for their cell phone technologies, they are already used to the concept of the SIM card. They can use the same SIM card for their cell phones and for hotspot authentication, which also means they could receive a single bill for both services. Some of the early SIM-based WLAN authentication solutions are pretty rudimentary. They involve the user sending a message from their cell phone to get a code that allows them to access the WLAN. But the more sophisticated solutions include a SIM card reader on a laptop. The SIM card authenticates the user but also applies encryption and security to the communication between the client and the network. That is likely the offering Transat is delivering for The Cloud. At the CTIA Wireless I.T. show last fall I talked to a handful of companies that are touting SIM-based authentication tools, including some of the big SIM card makers. While they're looking for a U.S. market, most weren't terribly bullish that the authentication method would take off here because people aren't widely used to the concept of using SIM cards. Even GSM users in the U.S. don't often realize that they have a SIM card....
