Yesterday we cheered MySQL. Here's the flip side. Ken Jacobs, Oracle's VP of product strategy is interviewed by eWeek:

Q: What kind of a threat does Oracle see open-source databases being, say, five years down the road?

MySQL production releases have typically been two years apart, and the time from alpha [first release] to production is about 1.5 years. They released Version 5.0 in alpha status in December 2003, so a reasonable expectation for production release of Version 5.0 is mid-2005.

It should be noted that MySQL Version 5.0 introduced stored procedures but not triggers or views, both of which are essential for significant enterprise applications. It appears unlikely that MySQL could introduce these critical features much before mid-2007. A whole wide range of additional capabilities including but not limited to XML and analytic—i.e. business-intelligence—features do not appear to be on the MySQL radar.

Furthermore, the low level of resources available to MySQL to fund development and the very small size of their development team raise questions about the viability of the MySQL business model and technology development path going forward.

It is unlikely that MySQL can rapidly accelerate development of their core product while acquiring and integrating disparate database technologies like the SAP DB (now called MaxDB) or MySQL Cluster. Indeed, this sort of 'engineering by acquisition' is a distraction and fragments their development efforts.

Apparently some PostgreSQL developers concur.

iPod lease: Life is recurring

iPod lease: Life is recurring 02/05/2005 10:10 PM
When the iTunes Music Store was unveiled in April 2003, it was clear that a revolution had begun. Even if it hadn’t sold a million songs in its first week; 100 million in its first 15 months; or a quarter billion in less than two years, Apple had certainly given record companies something to talk about in the wake of the Napster crisis. And while people questioned its degree of success, no one really scoffed at the idea, not even Windows users, who warmly embraced their own version six months later. But after two years, perhaps it's time to rethink the formula, much like Apple has — repeatedly — with the iPod. With the current rate of a million songs sold per day, there's no question that iTunes can coast through the next few years without losing much of its market share. But since it seems to have adopted a new aggressive approach to sales and market dominance, why not add a new trick to old dog’s arsenal? Steve Jobs has already proven his initial point of "people want to own their music," but Napster, arguably the main competitor to iTunes, has suddenly taken to promoting its "Napster To Go" subscription service, which has been available since last year: For only $14.95 a month, you can fill and refill your compatible MP3 player with your favorite music, artists you've just discovered and the latest releases without paying 99˘ per track. Get everything Napster has to offer plus unlimited music for your Napster To Go-compatible MP3 player. The key here, of course, is "without paying 99˘ per track," which Napster plasters all over its site without shame. And now, Napster is set for an advertising blitz during the Super Bowl. According to the Associated Press, the subscription idea is a little tricky. The Microsoft-developed system "works by essentially putting a timer on the tracks loaded on the player. Every time the user connects the player to the PC and the music service, the player automatically checks whether the user's subscription is still in effect. Songs stop playing if the subscription has lapsed. If the user doesn't regularly synch up the player with the service, the songs go dead as well." For what it's worth, there are millions of iPod users out there who have never purchased a single track off iTunes (or Napster). Despite the legal actions of the RIAA, file sharing is still rampant, and with the proliferation of Russian sites like AllofMP3.com and MP3Search.ru, people can fill up their iPods for next to nothing. However, a million songs a day isn't too shabby, and music lovers have proved that they do want to own their music. But when you're listening to your iPod at the beach, does it matter how the songs were acquired? Just like a car radio, if you hear a song you like (that you don’t own), you buy it. Still, I think Napster is missing the mark with its "without paying 99˘ per track" handle. But a subscription service has the potential to become an additional source of income for iTunes without taking away from its overall success. Not that Apple has anything to worry about. After all, Napster tracks still won't play on an iPod — even if they were giving them away.

Henrico County, Va.'s school board has turned down an offer by Apple to renew and extend its lease on 18,000 iBooks currently in use throughout the school system's secondary grades, reports the Richmond Times-Dispatch. The sticking point was the cost of an opt-out agreement, according to the report. For the short term, this simply means that students returning to Henrico County schools for the 2004 - 2005 academic year will use the same iBooks they had last year.
