The "Office"

The "Office"

The "Office" 02/01/2005 08:45 PM

Have you seen the terrible US version of BBC's The Office?

This comment at MetaFilter totally nails what's wrong with the concept of taking a downbeat, dry, British comedy and trying to make it work as an NBC sitcom:

Here's how fast this goes wrong: in the first scene Carell says "If you think she's cute now, you should have seen her a couple of years ago" and "Pam" says "What?!" - Dawn would never have reacted. The whole point was that everyone in the office was too worn down by the drudgery and inanity of their jobs to challenge Brent's horrifying misogyny and other casual cruelties. Because that's what really happens in every office in the world all the fucking time.

Microsoft continues to build bridges between Office desktop apps and reservoirs of back-office data. The "Information Worker Bridge" project now under way seeks to make it easier for integrators or in-house developers to make Excel or Word de-facto front ends for back-end accounting, ERP or other applications, sources said. In theory, this would take back-office integration beyond ODBC drivers and InfoPath, the Office application that lets people build dynamic forms on their desktops that tap into back-office XML data.

The Data Assistant for Microsoft® Office PowerPoint® 2003 provides an easy-to-use method of inserting and managing graphical data objects such as Visio drawings, and Excel charts and named ranges into PowerPoint presentations. There are three basic features for the tool: inserting graphical data objects into PowerPoint, saving graphical data objects for future use, and retrieving saved graphical data objects for reuse. Because the Data Assistant creates a connection between PowerPoint and the host application of the data object (Excel or Visio), you have the option of inserting the data object as it was saved or refreshing it to reflect any changes that were made to the data object.

"From Cathy S. in Calendar/Courts:
I just read a blurb in Corporate Counsel that will resonate with many attorneys here:

'Wireless E-mail Improves Productivity: A new report from The Radicati Group Inc., Enterprise Wireless E-mail Market Trends, 2003-2007, [PDF] says by the end of 2003, employees using wireless e-mail will have put in an extra 55 minutes of work per day. This figure will grow to 80 minutes by the end of 2007.' " [The KERBlog]

With my Treo 600, I'm already traveling down this path, but I actually don't mind it and it's not much of a burden. I tend to check my work email when I'm standing in line somewhere or doing something equally time-wasting. Except, now I'm not wasting time anymore. So I figure I'm racking up comp time.  :-D

New Office XML

New Office XML 06/05/2005 11:19 PM

The popular wisdom is that it takes Microsoft until Release 3 of anything to get it right; but the early word on the new Office XML format makes Release 2 look pretty good. Reading between the lines, the big news is, first, that the default file-save format is XML and, second, that the XML coverage is complete (In the current Office XML, PowerPoint is entirely absent and Excel has big holes). Assuming Microsoft pulls this off, it’s a major achievement. Along with patching those holes, working around the basic OLE-container-ness of everything has to be tricky; one of the nice things about MS Office is that you can jam pretty well anything that talks OLE into the middle of pretty well any Office doc and it just works. I have questions around the licensing: Brian Jones, linked above, says “royalty-free” but the current licensing language has some clauses that make lawyers nervous, so let’s wait and see on that one. At one level, it’s sad that while the rest of the world (including, lately, Adobe and IBM) has been hard at work on one wide-open, shareable, portable, standardized XML office document format, Microsoft put their energy into inventing another one. Still, this ought to be a step forward for Microsoft’s customers. The news coverage says “late 2006”; good luck to the team in the tough job of getting it shipped.

Nick's Office
Just thought I'd show off a picture of my office setup to anyone who's curious.

I work from home in a room set off by itself, which isolates the rest of the house from the ungodly noise eminating from my Logitech Z-680 speakers (now playing: Zappa's "Roxy and Elsewhere," alternating with Outkast's latest).

I spent years working on a cramped desk before I found the one shown here, which I hope to keep for the rest of my life (since that's how long I'll be paying for it). Buried under the desk is a system from VoodooPC, which I recommend highly. My favorite part of the setup? The dual 21" LCD monitors :)

Oh, and the two little orange-red desks at the right belong to my son and my daughter. When I'm not travelling, they claim ownership of my laptops. My son (age four) is a whiz at Sonic the Hedgehog, while my daughter (age three) loves her Dora the Explorer games. And they both get a big kick out of Scholastic's "I-Spy" video games.

Microsoft is loosening licensing rules on Office 2003 formats in order to get around new "open standard" restrictions to be adopted by the US state of Massachusetts, according to a state official.

The move puts Microsoft on a better footing to compete against open-source applications and non-proprietary document formats. Governments around the world have begun to reconsider the use of proprietary formats, which usually lock them into using particular applications and may hinder archiving efforts.
