iPods Could Appear in Wal-Mart in April 02/01/2005 08:41 PM

In what could signal trouble for the Windows Media based digital music industry, reports indicate that retail giant Wal-Mart is set to receive shipments of the iPod shuffle in April of this year. According to sources, the flash based-music player may be made available in all of the chain's 5,000 stores.

Will Mini iPods Delete Bigger iPods?

Will Mini iPods Delete Bigger iPods? 01/07/2004 06:38 PM
Well, as every other tech site in the world is now telling you, the not-so-secret rumors that Apple was coming out with a "mini iPod", cleverly named "iPod mini" are completely true. The other big story people are focusing on are that Apple has gotten past their Henry Ford-style color options, and will offer the iPod mini in multiple colors. You can read all the details at other sites, but in looking over the stories about the device, I'm wondering if the iPod mini will replace the iPod itself as the popular music device of choice. Personally, I don't own an iPod or any portable digital music player (I barely have any digital music - so buying such a device would only mean I need to rip all my CDs, which is a project I'm still not ready to bother with). Still, the iPod mini seems to make a lot more sense to me than many other portable music devices. The early MP3 players had way too little memory, but once you get up into the 4 gigabyte range, I wonder how much more some people need. Historically, of course, that's a dangerous viewpoint to take - since we've always figured out ways to fill up empty storage space. With Apple even advertising games, calendars and other iPod apps - you can imagine that the memory will go. However, if I were in the market for such a device, I'd definitely go with the mini iPod version right now: it's a better size for carrying around and it's "good enough" in terms of storage space - not to mention that it's cheaper. Thus, while I'm sure there are some people who simply need to have more storage space, I'm wondering if this mini iPod will steal marketshare away from its big brother.

In sharp contrast to the harmless pranks that will be played on April Fools' Day, deceptive phishing schemes are no laughing matter. To strike a blow against criminals who prey on Internet users, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC), National Consumers League and Microsoft Corp. today urged consumers to beware of phishing schemes aimed at stealing their identities.

Phishing is a high-tech twist on the all-too-common crime of identity theft, where spam or pop-up messages are used to deceive recipients into releasing personal or financial information into the hands of criminals. The FTC reports that identity theft was the No. 1 consumer complaint in 2004. And, for the first time, phishing appeared on the top Internet and telemarketing scams lists gathered by the National Consumers League in 2004.

Appearing at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., Lydia Parnes, acting director of the FTC's Bureau of Consumer Protection, Susan Grant, director of the National Consumers League's National Fraud Information Center and Internet Fraud Watch program, and Jacqueline Beauchere and Aaron Kornblum of Microsoft urged Internet users to exercise the same caution when doing business online as they would in the physical world and called for increased consumer awareness of phishing.

An inside look from Fast Company at Wal Mart and how it achieves its low-low prices. Interesting, considering the implications it has for the US economy and (both consequently and directly) for the world economy as a whole.

Morten Halfdan posted about Walmart having pushed the cost savings too far. Fast Company had a very interesting article about that a few months ago: The Wal-Mart You Don't Know. The giant retailer's low prices often come with a high cost. Wal-Mart's relentless pressure can crush the companies it does business with and force them to send jobs overseas. From Rebelscum reader JediJones: Hi, the Wal-Mart in Hazleton, PA got the OTC Falcon and VOTC display today but they put all the stuff out to the shelves instead of using the display. They put out 20 Falcons, 18 VOTC Luke, 12 VOTC Han, 12 VOTC Obi-Wan, and 6 VOTC Leia. I had heard different reports on the figure ratio so I wanted to confirm it as this. This apparently includes 6 VOTC cases of a 3-2-2-1 Luke-Han-Obi-Leia ratio. I've seen this myself at a Wal-Mart near me as well. And a buddy of mine was lucky enough to score one of the the side panels from the old display! Also, the entry/exit security machines have a new cardboard cover showing Star Wars on one side, and Mean Girls on the other. The promotional onslaught has begun!
