copyright conference

The
Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Pennsylvania is holding a conference this weekend on the growing copyright
problems facing scholars using digital media. "Knowledge Held Hostage:
Scholarly Versus Corporate Rights in the Digital Age" examines
the
overlap of creative use of technology with (often inadvertent)
copyright infringement.
Questions to be addressed include the following:
What justifies fair use in a scholarly context?
Is there a viable alternative to fair use in the
academic environment?
What are the fair use issues and needs raised by different scholarly
media (for example, print, film, digital media, databases)?
Do different kinds of institutional arrangements
(large vs. small school vs. professional society, classroom vs.
library) raise different fair use issues and needs?
The event is also
sponsored by Rice University 's
Connexions project

Wizards of OS copyright conference in
Berlin, June 13
05/14/2004 06:20 AMThe Wizards of OS conference coming on June 13 in Berlin will feature
some very good speakers on copyright and copywrong, including my
co-worker Wendy Seltzer.
Copyright law has become one of the most important and controversial
drivers of the Information Society. The Internet has made every user a
publisher, but copyright rules governing their activities are often
determined by opaque international bodies that decide rules with
little public input.
Join us in Berlin to debate where copyright should be going to ensure
that authors, musicians, film-makers and the public will all benefit.
Engage wih leading international thinkers from across Europe and the
United States. Meet colleagues who are working to make sure all
members of society benefit from copyright.
Attendance is free.

Canadian Copyright Board allows

Canadian Copyright Board allows
downloads, copyright levies
12/14/2003 12:27 PM
The
Copyright Board of Canada
issued a ruling on
" private
copying ", largely via peer-to-peer computing, with several
components. First, downloading is acceptable, but uploading is not
(presumably to target hyperpirates). Second, new mechanisms for
levies were described, freezing current ones, allowing new
charges.
the Copyright Board said uploading or distributing
copyrighted works online appeared to be prohibited under current
Canadian law.
However, the country's copyright law does allow making a copy for
personal use and does not address the source of that copy or whether
the original has to be an authorized or noninfringing version, the
board said.

04/19/2005 09:08 AMThe first day of Toronto's LinuxWorld Conference and Expo was made up

the last minute and I went to Moving to the Linux Business Desktop

Cool! Toronto's
Deep Lake Water Cooling System was launched today. The system cuts
electricity consumption in commercial buildings by 75 per cent by
drawing near-freezing water through pipes extending five kilometres
out into Lake Ontario. According to the
city, the
system will save enough power to service more than 100 Toronto
office towers or 4,200 homes per year, and it will eliminate 40,000
tonnes of carbon dioxide.
Here's
a> a public television segment explaining the process. Seems like it

The Toronto Airport On The Web?
Is It Against The Law To Put The Name Of
The Toronto Airport On The Web?
11/13/2003 05:16 PMSometimes you have to wonder about folks who are very quick to dash
off legal threats to websites that happen to mention their name. The
site
Urinal.net is a (surprisingly)
popular website posting pictures of urinals from around the world.
They were recently profiled in the Wall Street Journal and on BBC
radio
among others. The
site has hundreds of fans who regularly submit pictures of urinals
they take from locations all over the world. Basically, it's the sort
of bizarre, but amusing, site that makes the internet fun. Not
everyone seems to get the fun part, though. Someone from the Greater
Toronto Airports Authority (the GTAA) happened to find a page on the
site that includes two completely normal photos of urinals from the
Toronto Lester B. Pearson International Airport, and decided that this
must be illegal. They've sent
an email threatening legal
action against the site if they did not remove the name of the
airport from the site. The site's owners complied, but were clear to
mention that the GTAA had muted them. In response, the GTAA has also
told them they cannot even mention the GTAA. Again, the site has
complied in
very amusing
fashion. The description of the airport now reads: "The [facility
in question] - covering 1,792 hectares (4,430 acres) - has been
[Canada's largest city's] main international [aircraft take-off and
landing facility] since 1939 when it was first known as Malton
[facility]." They also note that the "Gee-Tee-Aye-Aye" forbids them
from naming the actual airport. It makes you wonder, on what legal
authority the GTAA is claiming you cannot name their organization or
their airports. It's not likely that anyone is going to be confused
into believing that
urinal.net is the official website of the
Toronto Lester B. Pearson International Airport. These days, people
seem very quick to pull out legal threats any time anyone so much as
mentions their name on a website.

Emerging Tech's self-organizing
conference-within-a-conference
12/20/2003 09:44 PM
At this year's O'Reilly Emerging Technology conference, there are 27
night sessions reserved from allocation by the organizers, left open
to be a "self organizing conference-within-a-conference." The idea is
that ETCON attendees propose sessions on the open wiki, and vote on
which they'd prefer to attend.
We're not looking for polished presentations. We'd prefer "white
board" sessions on your works-in-progess, rough demonstrations with
promise, concept and code (with an emphasis on running code, even if
it doesn't yet fully represent the concept). You should be prepared to
take input, answer questions, engage in discussion, and be open to
altering your conceptions and mucking about in your source. Oh, and
have a good deal of fun while you're at it.

Council is getting the runaround from the Toronto District School
Board, who have all but declared war on alternative education in the
city. She's looking for help from other people involved in Toronto's
alternative schools in refuting the Board's claims.
We are being told by the TDSB that our current council "set up" is not
recognized by the Board but yet my calls to several "regular" schools
indicate that many others schools have separate Incorp entities /
charities that fundraise the way we do and that the School Advisory
Council is for Policy only.
I would like to get some feedback on how other "Alternative Schools"
are set up.
